Black Sabbath Tribute Band Wolfmother Are No More

8:27AM Jess McGuire | We jest with the post title, but it looks like wise rock photographer Daniel Boud’s prediction has come true – award winning Australian rock group Wolfmother have called it a day. Bass/keyboard player Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett have resigned from the band, effective immediately, leaving just singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale. According to a statement on the band’s website, Stockdale plans to find other musicians before making a new Wolfmother album. “Wolfmother toured the world virtually non-stop through 2006 and early 2007 on the back of their acclaimed self titled debut album,” the statement said. “Longstanding frictions within the group then led them to take an extended break during the second half of 2007 to consider their future.” The final straw came at the weekend where Wolfmother headlined last Sunday at the Splendour In The Grass Festival in Byron Bay. “Following that show Chris Ross decided to announce that he was leaving the band due to irreconcilable personal and musical differences,” the statement said. “Myles Heskett has also decided to leave the band rather than continuing as part of a changed lineup. It will certainly be interesting to hear what the next record the group (sans Heskett and Ross) puts out sounds like, now won’t it? The break up doesn’t sound all that friendly… More »

Well, Whaddya Know? We Backed A Winner After All

2:54PM Jess McGuire | Yesterday we figured our personal desire to see Augie March win the APRA Song Of The Year award at last night’s ceremony would mean they’d certainly lose, as we have a tendency to bring bad luck upon everything we hold sacred and dear. But wahey! Our love found a way, and Augie March won out! A song inspired by old Bob Dylan records and war cameraman the late Neil Davis was last night crowned the song of the year by Australian songwriters. Augie March justified pre-award favourite status when it pipped Eskimo Joe, the John Butler Trio, Gotye and Wolfmother to win the APRA Song of the Year Award for One Crowded Hour in a lavish ceremony at the Melbourne Town Hall. The song’s author, Glenn Richards, who joins an esteemed group including Paul Kelly, Neil Finn and Nick Cave, scored a double when he was awarded the Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year gong. But it is somewhat of a misnomer, as Richards has been writing songs for more than 10 years. Hearty congratulations to the band, and bad luck to Wolfmother, Eskimo Joe, John Butler Trio and Gotye. We’re sure they’ll be able to distract themselves through the pain by listening to Black Sabbath, demanding Sarah tells them her name, sticking it to “the man”, and being fucking adorable (respectively). Australian Song Of The Year To Be Decided This Evening

4:27PM Jess McGuire | Tonight’s APRA Awards will see one of the following ‘tunes’ declared Song Of The Year. - Eskimo Joe’s Black Fingernails Red Wine - John Butler Trio Funky Tonight - Gotye Heart’s a Mess - Wolfmother Joker & the Thief - Augie March One Crowded Hour As far as we’re concerned, it should be handed straight to Augie March without any discussion whatsoever, which means it’ll probably go to John Butler Trio. DEFAMER AUSTRALIA/AUGIE MARCH FACT! Glenn Richards once tried to help a boozy Defamer Australia spell ‘Phnom Penh’ in an SMS when predictive text proved completely useless! More »
