BassBook Watch: Natalie Bassingthwaighte Reaches Out

4:46PM Jess McGuire | You know what, Natalie? I would have loved to have gone to your FANS ONLY show (and rescued you from the Sony-BMG types who currently have you held hostage). But why didn’t you invite me to your Melbourne show last night, rather than this evening’s Sydney gig?! I don’t LIVE in Sydney! You know what? I don’t think this is an olive branch at all. I think Natalie Bassingthwaighte is taking the piss out of me on Facebook. She’s taunting me with last minute invites to events she knows I cannot attend. Low blow, The Bass. PS: I still think you should cover Cool Rider though. More »

Attention Sony BMG: You Need To Make This Boy Band Happen

11:44AM Jess McGuire | The following image, probably pilfered from the Kylie messageboards and sent to me by my beloved gay Will, made me laugh heartily. And then, once the chuckles died down, realise that there is probably a lot more money to be made from Young Twinks than there is from Young Divas. I’ve no doubt that teenage girls, attracted to but not intimidated by The Virgin Three, would spend every single dollar they could find on CDs and merchandise. And then there’s the pink dollar to factor in! Get on it, please. More »

Is Sony BMG Cybersquatting Idol Domain Names?

12:26PM Clem Bastow | Given that last year Sony BMG could barely bring themselves to sign Idol winner Natalie Gauci (and then half-heartedly offered a contract to Matt Corby, which he duly rejected), one could assume the grand old days of five or six finalists ending up with a deal of one form or another were well and truly over. But could the label be placing its bets on certain Idol ‘08 contestants’ future success by cybersquatting, if you will, their official domain names? One eagle-eyed Defamer informant seems to think that’s the case. So said the mysterious and no doubt handsome Robert in an email to us: After watching the first episode I decided to look up some of the contestants domain names and found that Sony was the owner. Tara Reid Is Coming Down Under!

9:46AM Jess McGuire | We received numerous emails from tipsters yesterday declaring their complete panic at news notorious Hollywood party girl Tara Reid is planning a move to Australia! Reports SameSame – Reid has been offered a recording contract with SonyBMG and is set to move into the Rex Apartment Building in Sydney’s Potts Point in March, according to PR man Mark Patrick in the Sunday Telegraph yesterday. In January 2007, Reid was brought to Australia by ad exec John Singleton and retailer Gerry Harvey. “I love Australia. The people are amazing and I love Australians, they’re a lot of fun and just really good people,” said Reid at the time. It was Singleton who introduced Reid to SongBMG head Denis Handlin, so we’re laying the blame directly on him. There’s so much we can’t comprehend about the above. John Singleton, a man who allegedly knows what’s hot and what’s not, thinks Tara Reid is the shizz? Tara Reid sings? Tara Reid is being signed by SonyBMG? They’re unable to record whatever musical monstrosities she comes up with overseas? TARA REID IS MOVING TO AUSTRALIA? Wait, what are we saying? This is great news for Defamer Australia, Sydney-based paparazzi, and amorous Bourbon and Beefsteak attending rugby league players. Welcome to Oz, Tara! More »

The Elusive Idol Signings: Did Andrew G Speak Too Soon?

10:46AM Clem Bastow | Remember at the beginning of this year’s Australian Idol finals, Andrew G and James Mathison announced, steely faced, that they had a surprise for the Final 12 – that only one finalist would be signed to Sony BMG this year, the winner? And all the finalists looked a bit miffed that their chance at Ricki Lee/Anthony Callea/Young Divas/Shannon Noll-esque runner-up success had been dashed upon the rocks of big business? Now it seems it was just a ruse, with word that Sony BMG are already wording up third-place-getter Carl Riseley in the hope of giving the nu-swing trumpeter a deal. The navy trumpeter told Confidential he was expecting to meet with label executives who had approached him “straight after the verdict” when he was voted off the starmaker show on Monday night. While publicists for both Idol and Sony/BMG were keen to play down the secret session, Riseley said he was buoyed by the prospect, after hitting a bum note and missing out on a final two spot. “(Sony/BMG) have been really supportive and embraced the idea of Australia having its own jazz guy,” Riseley told Confidential yesterday. Australia’s former “own jazz guy”, James Morrison, was seen furiously voting for Matt and Natalie at his local Telstra dealership. In any case, it’s probably a good thing Carl looks set to be signed, because if his MySpace activity is anything to go by, it looks as though – like Mark Da Costa – this whole business has really hit him hard. He’s gonna BLOW her TRUMPET, and he’s TOTALLY JAZZED to do so! Etc, etc. More »
