10:12AM Jess McGuire | Working at RRR means I get a stack of CDs in the mail each week, and sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day to listen to them all. Being away for an entire month recently meant that I returned to more singles and albums than I care to count, and as I gazed at the gigantic pile of music that required my attention, I came up with a brilliant way to decide what I should listen to first – I would become extremely superficial and go entirely by cover art. 3:01PM Jess McGuire | Last month I managed to get my hands on a copy of Faux Pas‘ overwhelmingly brilliant reworking of the classic Noiseworks hit ‘Reach Out (Touch Somebody). I was so obsessed with the track, I think I played it for an unprecedented four weeks in a row on my radio show. More »

6:14PM Jess McGuire | This afternoon I began thinking about Short Stack. Even though months have passed since the infamous day Defamer Australia was attacked by barely literate youth baying for “blud” after I penned a less than complimentary review of their idols Short Stack, I still get hatemail from angry teenage girls. Hell, even the bass player’s father hasn’t let the incident go.
Suddenly, it hit me. I knew what I had to do. More »

9:22AM Jess McGuire | Alright, folks. Not only do I have a “hot concert tip” for folks living in Melbourne / Adelaide / Brisbane / Princess Mary’s hometown / Sydney, but I’m rather chuffed to be able to offer you a great song to download for nothing. Nada. Zilch. My kinda prices.
Very subtly over the past year, I’ve been dropping the name Lilith Lane around these parts. Why? Because she is bloody ace, that’s why.
Perhaps you would like to listen and decide for yourself? Very well. Right click and download ‘Winter’ right now, please.
And while you’re listening, here’s The Age’s review for the record.
Would you like to know more about this sultry songstress?

Ryan Adams: Stop Calling My Blog Bi-Polar!
3:13PM Jess McGuire | Defamer Australia is a rather big admirer of Ryan Adams’ music – both of his occasional heartbreaking works of staggering genius and his comedy tunes. A while back he wrote an amazingly nonsensical hip hop “piece” about his website (”Ryan Adams dot com, motherfucker!”), and we’ve spent the last twenty four hours going gaga over his latest triumph, a plea to internet folk who have been mocking his blog postings to back off.
It’s called My Blog, Foggy (yes, he’s named his Tumblr blog ‘Foggy’), and contains the brilliant opening lines “Stop calling my blog bi-polar, I have ups and downs like you, I’m just trying to feel normal, reaching out’s what lonely people doooo”
You can download it for yourself here.
It’s actually a cracking tune – we can’t stop singing it around the house!
Stop calling my blog bi-polar, it’s name is Foggy!
Anything for you, future husband. Anything… More »
Do You Remember Juliana Hatfield?
3:26PM Jess McGuire | Oh, come on. You must! The woman is brilliant! You may be familiar with her work in Blake Babies, you may recall her contributions to The Lemonheads It’s A Shame About Ray record, or hell – you may, like us, fondly remember her solo career, especially the blistering track Universal Heartbeat.
Either way, we very much like her style. We thought we’d hit the limit with our Juliana Hatfield appreciation when, bam! We discovered she left the Blake Babies over a disagreement about Wilson Phillips (Juliana digs a sweet melodic pop tune, you see) and we adored her even more than we ever thought possible.
She’s just started writing a blog where she tells the story behind her songs, and it’s a great read. You can also download more of her music (and then send her some bucks) from this page – we like This Is What I Think Of You and I Can’t Kill Myself.
After the jump, let’s watch a couple of classic video clips from the lass! More »
