'Mad Men' TwitterGate: Honest Brand Management or Savvy Network Plug?

Posted by STV at 8:40 AM on August 27, 2008

For the 987 readers (whoops — make that 988 and counting since starting this sentence) following "Don Draper"'s Twitter feed, today was an unusually turbulent day at Sterling Cooper Ad Agency. Same thing for the 1,207 folks following "Peggy Olson." You might have been among them, frozen out when AMC reportedly turned to Twitter with complaints about the Mad Men characters posting regular "updates" on the service — discussions which, for whatever reason, resulted in Twitter admin suspending a handful of feeds today until the a fan and media backlash supposedly helped whip them back into place a few hours later.

The Top 10 TV Characters Men Want To Be Like And Women Want To Be With

Posted by Seth at 8:14 AM on August 1, 2008

In browsing What Would Don Draper Do? yesterday —your one-stop Tumblr shop for tips, advice, and musings from everyone's favourite Sterling Cooper jr. partner/secret whore-child—it suddenly occurred to us that there are few people, fictional or real, whose loafers we'd more rather slip into. You know—just to see how it felt to be Donald Draper, shtupping his Jewess department-store-heiress mistress on the side. Which got us further thinking—what other iconic TV characters would we like to be, or do, or maybe both be and do? We left it to the capable hands of Defamer videosmith Molly McAleer to compile this ultimate Top Ten Countdown of TVs Coolest Cats. We're sure you'll agree that each in his own way demonstrated consistent grace under fire, panty-moistening sex appeal, and more cool that a seal hunt in December. And yes, we're well-aware that we left off many of your favorites; that was intentional, as this is the definitive Cool Cat list. Feel free to contribute your own nominees and clips in the comments. In the meantime, take it away, Parker Lewis!

Ask Don: Confused? Conflicted? Lingering regrets? Maybe everyone's favourite Madison Ave. iceberg—10% cool exterior, the other 90% lurking beneath the surface—can help you at What Would Don Draper Do: "Dear Don Draper, I was thinking about getting the 3G iPhone. Thoughts?: Stop thinking about it as a phone with a touch screen. Start thinking about it as a way to touch each other." [What Would Don Draper Do?]

'Nine' Now Literally Stars Everyone With Addition Of Fergie

Posted by Seth at 7:40 AM on July 22, 2008

· Fergie has joined the ever-growing cast of the Weinstein Co.'s Nine. In her first role in a major motion picture, she'll play "Saraghina, a lusty woman who introduces [Daniel Day-Lewis's character] to the world of sexuality" by lowering her drawbridge, extending a long straw, and sucking down the frothy contents of his simmering desire. In some ways you could almost say that she'll drink his manshake—she'll drink it up! (Forgive us.) [Variety]
· Mad Men endured another critic-derived facial, being named TCA's program of the year, best new program, and best drama. [Variety]
· British actor James Purefoy close to signing on as the lead in The Philanthropist, an NBC series about "a renegade billionaire who uses his wealth to help people in need no matter the risks or costs" that's loosely based on Donald Trump's life. [THR]
· Selma Blair's new sitcom Kath & Kim will take 30 Rock's 8:30 p.m. Thursday slot, with 30 Rock pitching camp in the far MILF-friendlier environment of 9:30. [THR]
· High School Musical: Get in the Picture underperformed for ABC, curtailing that network's plans for spinoffs High School Musical: My First Internet Photoscandal and Being Miley: The Search for America's Next Virgin Slut. [Variety]

Posted by Defamer Hollywood at 1:10 AM on July 18, 2008

The world awoke this morning to the chirping of little birds resembling Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris, perched at a podium in the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, announcing nominations for the 60th Emmy Awards. While most rolled over and tried to get back to sleep, we sat bolt upright as usual and sprinted to the window, our furious note-taking chronicling a few snubs, surprises and plenty of the conventional wisdom we've come to expect from the annual ritual.

Lionsgate Pulls WGA Into A Negotiation Room For A Spat-Ending Quickie

Posted by Seth at 6:41 AM on January 26, 2008

lionsgate.jpgLionsgate, the plucky indie studio who mined the untold box office potential of film franchises featuring a creepy marionette on a tricycle and an equally creepy actor in grandma drag, has forged its own side deal with the WGA:

"Lionsgate is considered a leader in the industry and its signing an interim agreement again confirms that it is possible for writers to be compensated fairly and respectfully for their work and for companies to operate profitably," said WGA West prexy Patric M. Verrone and WGA East prexy Michael Winship.

SAG Awards Nominees: There Will Be Day-Lewis

Posted by Defamer Hollywood at 4:40 AM on December 21, 2007

daylewis.jpgDespite the flaccid-sounding acronym, there's nothing namby-pamby about the SAG awards--the greatest honor Hollywood's thespians can bestow upon each other (besides, of course, the Oscars, the Backstage Westies, and the Craigslist Jobs: TV/Film/Video Awards). Jean Tripplehorn and Terrence Howard announced this year's nominees early this morning to an enraptured crowd of before-hours cleaning crew and building security at the Pacific Design Center:

Into the Wild led the pack with four nominations, but plenty of SAGgie was love was spread about, including George Clooney's cleaner-with-a-conscience Michael Clayton, and Daniel Day-Lewis's nose for There Will Be Blood. On the women's side, nods went out to Angelina Jolie for Best Accent in A Mighty Heart, and Ellen Page, for her breakout title role in zeitgeisty teen pregnancy comedy Juno. And while we have a ways to go until the 2008 World Stunt Awards (the Stunties?), at least we have the Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture category to tide us over until then, singling out the abs-ilicious Spartans of 300 for their fine spearchucking efforts. The TV side, meanwhile, had few surprises, save for a nomination for Mad Men's John Hamm (to add to his Golden Globe nomination), and another for the AMC drama's ensemble, for their outstanding work revisiting the politics of 1960s corporate America as they develop lung and liver cancer in real time.

A full list of nominees is here.

Trade Roundup: Viacom CEO Getting Ready To Have His Heart Broken By DreamWorks

Posted by Defamer Hollywood at 6:00 AM on September 20, 2007

· Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman prepares for the jilting DreamWorks partners David Geffen and Steven Spielberg may inflict upon Paramount, calling their potential departure for a new studio venture "completely immaterial" to his company's happiness and inviting the pair to "go ahead and fuck whoever you want, you disloyal little tramps, see if I care! My heart will go on!" [Variety]
· Jimmy Kimmel will host the AMAs* for an amazing fourth time. [*the American Music Awards, more popularly known as the "Retarded Grammies."] [THR]
· Happy news: AMC is about to pick up the awesome Mad Men for a second season, the network's tribute to the drinking--Scotch-in-the-office, secretary-banging heyday of the 1960s advertising world. [Variety]
· Eddie Haskell is mad as hell at SAG over undisbursed foreign Beaver residuals and not going to take it anymore [THR]
· It's Matthew McConaughey's Hollywood, and we're all just living in it: Jennifer Garner is in negotiations to star opposite a "charmingly womanising" McConaughey in New Line's Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, and McConaughey takes Owen Wilson's place in Tropic Thunder, from which Wilson recently withdrew due to, um, "creative differences" or something. [Variety]
