Ladyhawke Is Terribly Upset About All This ARIA Controversy

1:45PM Jess McGuire | Poor Ladyhawke. She’s a simple lady who loves nothing more than delivering insanely good pop music to the masses with a minimal amount of fuss, but now it seems critics are questioning her right as a New Zealander living in London to qualify for her recent ARIA nominations. And this has resulted in Ladyhawke saying “Screw you guys, I’m going home!”. Nooooooooooooo! More »

Jessica Mauboy No Longer Waitin’ For ARIA Nominations

10:51AM Clem Bastow | If you’ll forgive a bit of atrocious title punnery based on her back catalogue, exciting news for Jessica Mauboy this morning: she’s ahead of the pack in her first post-Idol ARIA Awards, leading the field with a massive seven nominations. Who’s laughing now, Kyle? More »

Ladyhawke’s Delightful Selection Of Tunes

8:03AM Jess McGuire | Oh hey! Guess what? Despite all the promises I made last year, I totally forgot to tell you when I was going to broadcast the Ladyhawke interview on RRR – and it went to air last night. Heads up fail by yours truly! Hahaha, we’ll laugh about it later. Maybe. Anyway, should the mood take me I may just consider sticking up some of the audio here on Defamer Australia, but in the mean time… would you like to see what New Zealand’s finest pop export decided to play during her Rage-esque evening sitting in the RRR hotseat and controlling the playlist? Of course you would. More »

Ladyhawke Covers ‘Womanizer’

4:28PM Jess McGuire | Has it been nearly a month since I last mentioned Ladyhawke on Defamer Australia? How dreadful of me. I should remedy this situation at once by bringing your attention to something that “did the rounds” (internet wise) about a month ago. I realise my coverage is late, but I’ve been busy, and hey – better late than never, right!? Y’all know how everyone (cough) has been banging on about Lily Allen’s cover of Britney’s ‘Womanizer’, yeah? Lily “accidentally” gave the song to Mark Ronson to play on the radio hoping he’d talk over it but he didn’t and now her record company is cranky at her, blah blah blah. WHATEVER. I much prefer Ladyhawke’s version of the song which was recorded for Radio 1’s Live Lounge. I think it’s beautiful. You can download it via Hard Candy. More »

Defamer Australia Versus Ladyhawke

12:26PM Jess McGuire | Alright, ladies and gentlemen. There’s nothing I hate more than transcribing but there’s nothing I love more than you, so despite my extreme laziness, I have tapped out some of the Ladyhawke interview I did last week for your consumption. Happy? The show which will see the very lovely Ladyhawke (aka Pip Brown) programming the playlist will be airing in January at some point on RRR 102.7FM. I’ll be sure to give you a heads up. But in the meantime, you can check out the little chat we had before I let her wreak havoc with her pop-filled iPod, and her thoughts on Bruce Springsteen AND Icehouse’s Electric Blue. It should be noted that the latter selection, combined with her desire to spin the Baywatch theme on the radio (I AM ALWAYS DJING THAT SONG, IT IS EPIC!), means I am certain – certain – Ladyhawke is a future bestie. If Bassingthwaighte falls through, anyways. DEFAMER AUSTRALIA VERSUS LADYHAWKE DA: We’re very lucky to welcome our special guest Pip Brown aka Ladyhawke. How are you, Pip? LADYHAWKE: I’m good, thank you. DA: That’s good. Are you glad to be here? LADYHAWKE: Oh yeah, it’s amazing. DA: Thank you! LADYHAWKE: (humorously overenthusiastic) AMAZING! DA: The energy level coming from both of us, I think, is astounding. LADYHAWKE: I feel like my brain just collapsed or something inside my head. More »

Lindsay Lohan Loves That Great New Band Called Ladyhawke!

11:57AM Jess McGuire | Why, Lindsay Lohan and yours truly share something else in common besides a constant desire to “be adequite” – we love the pop stylings of Ladyhawke! Unlike Lindsay, I am aware that Ladyhawke is an individual from New Zealand who goes by the name Pip Brown during her day to day life, and not numerous folk who play various instruments and have formed something called a “band”… Still, let’s see Lindsay gush, shall we? God, that’s going to pick up some unwanted attention via dirty Google searching, isn’t it? i love this group. i was actually searching on itunes not too long ago and was getting the album for “the black ghosts” and saw Ladyhawke on the same page. mixture of 80s pop/new wave and i’m pretty much obsessed with their entire vibe. This makes sense. Lindsay is allegedly gagging to play Stevie Nicks in a Fleetwood Mac related movie (although, you know, Stevie would prefer Lindsay at least wait until Ms Nicks is dead before auditioning) What are Lindsay’s top picks from the album? Little Feat – “Long Distance Love”

12:44PM Jess McGuire | I had a tops weekend avoiding the mud at Meredith by staying in town, DJing up a cheesy storm until the wee hours at The Retreat, and then sharing the last beer left in the fridge at my darling friend Talei’s house and playing heaps of old records using something called “vinyl” (I think it’s pronounced “vin-ell”, WTF). Anyway, I cannot think of a more perfect song in the world to listen to at the end of an evening with rain pelting away outside than “Long Distance Love” by Little Feat. I’d only ever heard (the astonishingly gorgeous, by the way) cover by Mia Dyson, but fell madly for Lowell George’s charms within seconds. As I am wont to do from time to time, I thought I might give you kids a chance to dig my latest musical obsession. The only copy of the song on YouTube contains a strange image of a cat singing along. No, I don’t know why. It’s kind of a weird way to be introduced to the country-rock stylings of Little Feat – assuming you’re not familiar with the song – but hell. Whatever. Miming cats with shaved legs and bodies have a right to heart wrenching songs of yesteryear too. Also, remember how I said earlier this year that I would interview Ladyhawke before the year was through? GET YOSELVES READY. More »

Ladyhawke – ‘My Delirium’

11:44AM Jess McGuire | When I reviewed the Ladyhawke album for Jmag, I declared ‘My Delirium’ to be the track I recommended readers download, and I’m happy to learn it’s now going to be the new single from record. Over in the U.K, Popjustice have launched a campaign to try and get ‘My Delirium’ on top of the singles chart on December 25th, thus ensuring New Zealander Pip Brown’s place in the pop history books in the chapter titled ‘Chrismas Number Ones‘. Popjustice says: This is clearly a Christmas Number One waiting to happen. All it needs is some sleigh bells chucked over the top and maybe some new lyrics about the festive period (’stop playing with my eggnog’, ’stop playing with grandma’s colostomy bag’ etc etc) and it’s job done. Ladyhawke could do a new video where instead of a car she’s in Santa’s sleigh, and instead of a guitar she’s holding a Christmas tree. There should probably be some snow on the ground too. And she’d have to change her name to Ladyho Ho Ho. More »

Ladyhawke’s Homemade Clip For ‘Dusk Till Dawn’

2:43PM Jess McGuire | Oh hey, have I mentioned lately how much I adore Ladyhawke? It feels like it’s been weeks. I don’t want you to feel like my love for that record has waned in any way. It is the best release of the year, and if you don’t go out and buy it and become breathlessly excited by its pop brilliance, you’re a fool. Who’s with me? “I could not agree more with you, Jess. Do yourself a favour!” Thank you, Molly. Anyway, given that Defamer Australia has pretty much been a Ladyhawke-love zone since the record arrived in our Magical Letterbox Of Awesomeness, we were (of course) quick to give you the heads up regarding the release of the official video clip for ‘Dusk Till Dawn’. Well, guess what? We’ve just been alerted to the fact that Ladyhawke has released a second (and totally adorable!) video for the song, featuring an all star cast – including Sia, JD Samson from Le Tigre, Peaches, and Ladyhawke’s mum! – filmed on webcams singing along to the track. Check it out for yourself after the jump! It’s made me incredibly happy today. PS: You can tell that Sia and JD Samson are sharing a camera. Bless ‘em! More »
