People
7:49AM Jess McGuire | This is the first time I’ve stumbled across some of Jessica Mauboy’s publicity photos (“Finger on the pulse as ever, McGuire” – You) and my god! She looks fantastic.
I think that’s pretty much all I have to say on the matter. What’s Damien Leith up to at the moment? Still penning books and being a lovable Irish chap?

Jessica Mauboy’s Brand New Video Clip For ‘Burn’
2:04PM Jess McGuire | Ladies and gentlemen, this clip is literally “hot off the press” (or whatever the music video equivalent is) and I knew I had to bring it to you straight away… it’s Jessica Mauboy’s Rihanna-esque track ‘Burn’.
The fans in the comments seem to be digging it. And doesn’t she look fantastic? Somewhere Kate DeAraugo is stabbing a Mauboy-sized voodoo doll.
UPDATE: Fear not, kids. The clip will be back up soon – someone from Sony-BMG has contacted me and assured me it’s only down temporarily because of technical issues. Or something. More »
Australian Idol: How The Wes Was Won
11:59AM Jess McGuire | It’s taken me quite some time to compose myself after the excitement that was last night’s Australian Idol finale. The songs! The fireworks! The crowd! The rain! Truly magical stuff.
The press are reporting that the winner of Australian Idol 2008 was Wes Carr, but I would beg to differ. The real winner was music.
Sydney boy Wes Carr has beaten shearer Luke Dickens to become the sixth Australian Idol. “I’m speechless,” Carr said after the win.
It should be noted that Wes Carr was not actually speechless, having written a long list of thank yous on the back of his lyrics to Rattlin’ Bones which he gleefully read out after his win was announced. Personally, I began hoping for an orchestra to drown him out, Oscars style, and I actually like Wes!
Carr wins a recording deal with Sony, a car and $200,000 towards developing his craft. The win has been a long time coming for Michael Jackson fan Carr, who has been honing his craft through live performances from the age of 14. In 2003 Carr joined band Tambalane, a side project of Gillies’ after Silverchair went into hiatus. But the venture didn’t last.
Who’s laughing now, Gillies? Well, probably you. But still.

Breaking: Melbourne Confidential Bring You The Breaking News, As It Breaks
9:22AM Clem Bastow | Every now and again, as Defamer Australia peruses the daily news, we are given pause to wonder just how many people are actually running some of Australia’s online news “presences”. From crazy typos to hilarious Photoshops, their antics are a bottomless well of (unwitting) entertainment that suggests there is actually only one man and a couple of hamsters working in the “digital” departments. To wit, this fresh tidbit in Herald Sun Confidential’s ‘Confidential Reports‘ section:
Not only is it discussing last year’s Idol prize fight, but it uses the year before’s Damien Leith and Jessica “Do What You Do, Say What You Say” Mauboy to illustrate it. Incidentally, has anyone seen or heard from Natalie Gauci lately? Who’s excited for this year’s installment of the popular televisual talent quest franchise? Now now, one at a time, please! More »
Jess Mauboy Wins Deadly, Joins Young Divas; No Word As To Whether Dandruff-Free Confidence Was Behind Her Rise To The Top
11:10AM Clem Bastow | Congratulations are in order for last year’s Australian Idol runner-up, Jessica Mauboy, who last night won Artist Of The Year at the Deadly Awards.
It goes without saying that we thought Jess should have won over Damien “Not Even An Australian Citizen” Leith and his googly-eyed falsetto, but this should be a nice, if belated, vindication.
Perhaps fewer congrats are due, however, on the topic of Jess having also been announced – officially, as it was assumed for some time – as the newest Young Diva, following Ricki-Lee’s departure from the group (once referred to memorably by our friend and UK Correspondent, Will Fop, as “the bin of the Australian music industry”).
“They’re beautiful inside and they’ve had a lot of experience in performing around Australia, and they’ve inspired me a lot,” Mauboy said of her fellow Young Divas.
Their first gig together was an illustrious engagement that would make Barbra Streisand seethe with envy: a free Idol concert in Melbourne’s Fed Square. More »
