2:38PM Jess McGuire | Oh, I am so glad there’s a newspaper out there happy to publish the fabulous opinions of Mr Peter Costello! I love getting hits from his smug-bong. I think I must like punishing myself, like the albino dude in that Michael Moore documentary about the Catholic church called The Da Vinci Code. More »

The Australian is reporting The Dev is on strike! More » The Courier-Mail’s Website Dominates Brisbanetimes.com.au
2:03PM Jess McGuire | When it comes to Queensland-based news websites, there appears to be only one major player. The website for the Courier-Mail has seen its hits go through the roof, leaving its rival – Fairfax’s brisbanetimes.com.au – for dust.
From the MediaWeek newsletter today:
The Courier-Mail’s website couriermail.com.au has soared to record traffic levels, confirming its position as the most popular news website in Queensland and one of the fastest growing in Australia, the Brisbane daily noted this week.

Fairfax Strikewatch: Back In The Trenches
9:22AM Clem Bastow | After having decided to strike last Thursday to protest Fairfax Media’s proposed job cuts, sacking frenzy and general evil overlord behaviour – and leaving the weekend editions hollow shells in their absence – striking Fairfax journalists are back on the job today. And after threatening striking staff with lock-outs in an epic corporate sook of “You’re not coming to my party and we’re not friends anymore!” proportions, it looks as though Fairfax bosses have cooled their heels somewhat, too.
The threats were made during talks in Sydney between union officials and Fairfax executives Lloyd Whish-Wilson, Michael Gill and Greg Moses.

It’s A Sack-Tastic Voyage At Fairfax!
12:11PM Clem Bastow | As we mentioned yesterday, Fairfax staff are striking in Sydney, Melbourne, Illawarra and Newcastle in protest of Fairfax’s proposed 550 job cuts (not to mention other issues like freelance agreements and pay rates), the first and highest profile of which was Age editor-in-chief Andrew Jaspan. Well, it seems if there’s something Fairfax big wigs like even less than letting people keep their jobs, it’s letting striking people keep their jobs!
Radio broadcaster and Sydney Morning Herald columnist Mike Carlton has been sacked for refusing to write his weekly column during a strike.

When You’re About To Sack 550 Employees, Who Goes First?
1:36PM Clem Bastow | If you’re Fairfax Media, the answer would be simple: can the editor-in-chief of one of your biggest papers! That’s right, just a day after Fairfax announced 550 jobs would be slashed across the board (the news, as other papers quaked in their boots regarding the apparent downturn in publishing the cuts reflected, reached as far as the UK), The Age’s editor-in-chief Andrew Jaspan – who’d been in the role since July of 2004 – was shown the door. Here’s the official word, and more over the jump.
Don Churchill, Fairfax’s chief executive for Victoria, broke the news to staff at a meeting this morning.
