Australian Idol Round-Up: Sophie Not Pop!Ular With Darren Hayes
3:35PM Clem Bastow | Idol contestant Sophie Paterson, aka the Final 12 member hand-picked from the show’s first expat auditions in London (the LA audition rounds were canned) with the help of celebrity judges Darren Hayes and Tina Arena, is slowly breaking the fragile heart of Hayes into a million tiny pieces. The ex-Savage Garden singer reckons Paterson is too easily letting herself be sucked into the Idol machine. Gee, you think?
“I can understand there’s a pressure to conform – you’re surrounded by a lovely wardrobe and stylists … you’ve got all these resources at your hands, you can be very slick, but I don’t think that’s what she is.”

Things Are Already Looking Amazing For Australian Idol ‘08
1:23PM Clem Bastow | After the fizzer that was 2007’s effort, this latest season of Australian Idol is already having “isshews” – and it’s not even on the air yet!
After much fanfare regarding the show’s overseas auditions for expat Australians, the Los Angeles round has already been cancelled. The excuse they’re using is Kyle Sandilands’ busy schedule; is that what they’re calling “no one turned up” these days…
The United States auditions were due to be held on Sunday with Sandilands presiding over the judging.
Just hours after Tina Arena and Darren Hayes were announced as guest judges to scope the talent at the show’s London auditions, an Australian Idol spokesman said Sandilands’ conflicting schedule had caused the endeavour to be scrapped.
Production being stretched for its London auditions was another big factor, the spokesman added.
“London has been massive for us and we’ve had an overwhelming response to London,” he said.
“Kyle’s timetable was a factor of us not being able to do all our commitments as well.”
We shouldn’t be too quick to judge Idol ‘08, however; the article goes on to reassure us all that audition numbers were up 30% this year… in Newcastle.
We’re not going to start holding our breath just yet. More »
Darren Hayes Should Hold Off On Getting A Quickie Divorce – Anthony Callea Has Been Spotted “About Town” With A New Fellow!
8:50AM Jess McGuire | Only yesterday we were positively frothing at the mouth at the idea of Anthony Callea potentially falling for Darren Hayes should the pair ever stop quietly admiring each other and get on with the task of recording a duet (hey, it worked for Delta and The Potato, didn’t it?) but it seems we may have been too hasty.
National Bingo Night host Tim Campbell is said to be
helping the pop prince get over his break-up, with the two lads seen
hitting the town this week.
After we reported their stroll around the Tan together on Monday
night, a spy revealed the pair were at South Yarra bar the Botanical on
Saturday night.
It’s believed the two became friends last month in WA, where they were both performing in the stage musical Rent.
Campbell has since moved to Anthony’s hometown of Melbourne to play the lead role of Australian rocker Johnny O’Keefe in Shout.
Callea’s manager yesterday maintained his star and the former Home and Away regular were friends.
“To suggest Anthony and Tim are anything more than colleagues is totally untrue,” Wayne Pilkington said.
WE WILL CERTAINLY BE KEEPING AN EYE ON THIS, ANTHONY! Especially since you spent a good couple of years claiming to be a vagina hunter. But you wouldn’t lie to us now, surely? More »
Anthony Callea Wants Darren Hayes’ Hot, Hard… Songwriting And Vocals
6:37PM Clem Bastow | In news to make fans of shiny gay pop fanfic and YouTube fantasy clip montages wet themselves giddily, Anthony Callea has declared he would like to work with the Pop!ular Darren Hayes.
The now-single Idol runner-up and fun-sized gay icon has long been a fan of Hayes’ work and was chuffed to hear that Dazza returned the sentiments.
During an interview with Confidential earlier this year, ex-Logan boy Darren – who married boyfriend Richard Cullen last year – said he admired the way Anthony handled his public outing and admitted he was a fan of the Melbourne crooner.
“Did he really say that?,” Anthony asked. “That’s so nice. I think he’s amazing. I would love (for us) to do something together. His new album is great.”
It goes without saying that this would be AMAZING.
Can’t you just see it now? Maybe they could play Young Divas for a moment and cover George and Aretha’s I Knew You Were Waiting For Me, with accompanying Thunderpuss remix.
In all seriousness, though, we’d like to see it happen: Darren knows his way around a good pop melody and Anthony has the pipes to pull off something special vocally. Do it, boys! More » Darren Hayes Denies Racial Abusing Thai Waiter, Defamer Australia Readers Vouch For Ex-Savage Garden Star’s Character
2:05PM Jess McGuire | In an unsurprising turn of events, Darren Hayes has “strenuously” denied unleashing a torrent of racially flavoured abuse at an employee of London restaurant Busaba Eathai.
In a statement a spokesperson for the singer said: “Darren is unable to comment to any extent as the incident is presently under investigation by the police, with whom he has cooperated fully.â€
The spokesperson continued: “However he is deeply upset at the allegation which he strenuously denies and anyone who knows Darren will recognise thatgm the particular nature of the allegation is totally abhorrent to him and contrary to everything for which he has stood.â€
And if you don’t believe Darren, then believe the good readers of Defamer Australia. Having gotten to know Darren from video clips like That Savage Garden Song With Nonsensical Lyrics Which Appeared On The Soundtrack Of That Juliette Lewis Film, to his more recent solo efforts like The One Where He Runs Around With A Ghettoblaster And Inflicts Pop On The British, our readers – like the nation – are positively behind Darren.
- Darren Hayes…racist…I think not. The man doesn’t have a mean bone in his body.
- Darren Hayes guilty of racism? I doubt it for one minute, he’s always been a huge advocate of human rights of all kinds, including anti racism
- I have no doubt these allegations are a lie. they go against everything he stands for. Darren Hayes wore the aboriginal flag to the Australian Olympics closing ceremony.
Sarcasm aside, we must say that it does sound rather unlike the Darren Hayes we’ve read about in the press all these years. We shall wait and see what the investigation concludes. More »
Darren Hayes Arrested For Allegedly Racially Abusing A Waiter
8:24AM Jess McGuire | Last week, ex-Savage Garden frontman and Celebrity Homosexual Popstar Darren Hayes won our heart when he unleashed an eloquent tirade against John Howard’s stance on gay marriage.
Hayes married Briton Richard Cullen in London last year, but his partner has to travel with him to Australia on a tourist visa.
“It makes me angry and frustrated,” the former Savage Garden frontman said yesterday. “I’m Australian and the way the law sits I can’t bring my partner home as my partner. That to me is an infringement of my civil rights – a very un-Australian thing. I would never have voted for John Howard and I encourage people not to. I don’t think he speaks for this country in the same way I don’t think George Bush speaks for the US.”
But will his recent barney with a Thai waiter put him in the bad books forever, with allegations he racially abused a staff member at a West End restaurant?
Hayes fronted police last Friday night in London, where he was arrested for the alleged racial abuse of a staff member at Busaba Eathai in Wardour Street, in London’s West End, on July 22. The attack did not involve physical violence, but is believed to have been directed at a male member of staff. He was released on bail.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We can confirm that a 35-year-old man was arrested by Westminster police on suspicion of racially abusing a member of staff. He was arrested after voluntarily attending a Central London police station by appointment. He has been released on bail pending further inquiries, until the 21st of September.”
A manager at the Soho restaurant, who did not want to be named, confirmed the incident and said that it involved a verbal attack by Hayes on a member of staff. He said restaurant staff reported the incident to police, who took statements on July 23. The victim had returned to work, and the matter was now in the hands of the police.
How very Cheryl Tweedy, Darren.
Innocent until proven guilty, etc. We’ll leave our judging hat on the rack for now, but we’re quite prepared to don it (and adopt a stern, surly look) should the allegations turn out to be true.
