Celebrities Spotted At Last Night's MIFF Closing Film (And Glamorous After Party)

Australian Post Posted by Jess McGuire at 8:29 AM on August 13, 2007

The Melbourne International Film Festival finished up last night with a screening of This Is England followed by a knees up at some place on Little Bourke Street. We kept our eagle eye out and managed to spot in the crowd...

- Brooke Satchwell!
- Brendan Cowell!
- And we're done!

Well, there may have been others but the room was quite dark and we were mostly focusing our attentions on planning a "dance off" of West Side Story proportions in order to get the party started. Then we got distracted by a passing quiche, remembered how hungry we were, and left to find a late dinner.

Also, Brooke Satchwell is quite sweet looking and we now feel oddly protective of her (glares at Matthew Newton).

PS: This Is England was wonderful. Hilarious and moving and terrifying and heartbreaking in equal measures.

Matthew Newton Pleads Guilty

Australian Post Posted by Jess McGuire at 12:37 PM on May 28, 2007

Hot off the presses - Matthew Newton's lawyer Chris Murphy has informed the court that Newton will be pleading guilty to a remaining charge of common assault against ex-girlfriend, former Neighbours actress Brooke Satchwell.

The charge of assaulting the popular actress was laid following a break-up argument at the former couple's Sydney home on September 13 last year.

"We will be pleading guilty to a matter of assault on the next occasion," Mr Murphy told the court.

Three other more serious charges, alleging Newton made threats against Satchwell and her family and was violent towards her during the late-night argument, were dropped today.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Paul Cloran adjourned the matter to the same court on June 12.

Newton was not present in court today.

Charges Dropped Against Matthew Newton

Australian Post Posted by Jess McGuire at 3:48 PM on May 22, 2007

Some of the more serious charges directed toward Moonface's son Matthew Newton regarding an alleged assault against ex-girlfriend Brooke Satchwell have been dropped, papers are reporting.

Actor Matthew Newton is expected to face little more than a rap over the knuckles for allegedly bashing ex-girlfriend Brooke Satchwell, after the prosecution indicated it would withdraw the most serious charges against him.

A court has also heard the son of TV legend Bert Newton has lost job opportunities worth thousands of dollars due to the case.

Newton was originally charged with four offences, but a court today heard he will plead guilty to just one count of common assault – with police agreeing to drop counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and stalking and intimidating Satchwell, intending to cause her to fear physical or mental harm.

We're more curious about the choice of words in the headline for the article referenced above. "Newton girl-bash charges dropped"? When did assault occasioning actual bodily harm get shortened to "girl-bash"?

Can we expect The Daily Telegraph to abbreviate other charges relating to violent crimes in the future? Will sexual assault in the first degree be cut down to the quicker "rapey big-time"? Christ almighty.
