I have rattled on about him a fair bit around here, what with him being one of this country’s finest songwriters and all. 10:19AM Jess McGuire | Hey, remember last week when we spotted Missy Higgins thanking Barack Obama in that YouTube clip produced by celebrity Sierra Club supporters? That was interesting, wasn’t it? Did you find yourself quietly chuckling and muttering affectionately “Oh, Missy Higgins – where in the world will you end up next, you cheeky little monkey?”
If so, you’ll be very pleased to hear that I am quite keen on playing Where In The World Is Missy Higgins regularly (or at the very least, as material presents itself). If you feel like using Photoshop to mock up a picture of Missy resembling Carmen Sandiago or even Wally of Where’s Wally? fame, please do – and send it to the usual address.

Ben Lee Covers ‘Woman Is The Nigger Of The World’

The back story (from Ben’s blog):
When we made the album, I recorded a cover of John Lennon’s “Woman is the Nigger of the World”, which will be a b-side to one of the singles off the record. I have always loved this song, and it is tied in to the themes of the album. Of course, back when it was released, and still now, many people are unable to get past the use of the ‘N’ word in the title to look at what the song is really saying. In the late 1970’s, the Chairman of the Black Caucas, Congressman Ron Dellums, did much to shed light on this subject by saying:
“If you define ‘nigger’ as someone whose lifestyle is defined by others, whose opportunities are defined by others, whose role in society is defined by others, then good news, you don’t have to be black to be a nigger in this society. Most of the people in America are niggers.”
The song is not just about women, or black people, or any other oppressed group. It’s about all of us, trying to find a way of living our lives in an authentic manner in a world that seems intent on compromising our basic integrity.

With His Guru’s Full Permission, Ben Lee Has Decided To Get Hitched
9:15AM Jess McGuire | This is nice news for a Wednesday, isn’t it? Ben Lee (pictured left with The Two Ronnies) has popped the question to girlfriend Ione Skye – but before he did, he had to get the go ahead from his spiritual guru Sakthi Narayani Amma. Lucky for all involved then that Amma gave Ione two thumbs up!
From the Daily Telegraph, who in turn grabbed it from Ben’s blog…
Amma told me: ‘The purpose of marriage in human life is to build a family. Partnership is not just for enjoyment, as it is for animals. Once you understand this, it will not take you off your path. Marriage will be good for Ben’.”
The guru continued: “In the past, Ben has wavered on his path as he didn’t have support. Ione understands his job and profession and can support him. She is spiritually connected to the divine. There should not be any problem with Ben and Ione. Every marriage has adjustments. You cannot plan for everything in life. But it can be smooth. Ben can ask Ione. Amma will bless everything.”
Three cheers, etc etc.
