Farewell, Enough Rope!

7:55AM Jess McGuire | Sad news, fans of penetrating insights into the minds of visiting celebrities/infamous folk! Andrew Denton has announced that his acclaimed interview series on Our ABC will be coming to an end in 2008, and he plans on taking his inimitable ‘mad skills’ over to the other side of the camera. Andrew Denton has announced that the current season of his popular Monday night interview program on the ABC is the last. The final episode of Enough Rope With Andrew Denton will screen on December 8. And what does Andrew have to say about all this? “It’s a good time to finish,” he says. “Not everybody gets to finish in their own time and on their own terms, and I certainly feel very lucky.” SAID THE ACTRESS TO THE BISHOP, ETC! Ahem. Where were we? More »

Denton Not Planning On Attending The Logies Despite Nomination, Also Unlikely To Interview David Hicks (Unless The Former Guantanamo Bay Resident Has A Penchant For Freddo Frogs)

12:29PM Jess McGuire | It’s going to take more than a Gold Logie nomination to get Andrew Denton to break his tradition of watching the awards ceremony in the comfort of his own home whilst wearing his pyjamas. … on the night of May 4, when the industry elite turn out at Melbourne’s Crown Casino for the 50th Logies, the host of Enough Rope With Andrew Denton hopes to be tucked up at home. “Don’t get me wrong, I love the Logies, but I think the best way to watch them is at home on the couch in my jammies,” he said. It’s Gold Logie Fever!

1:51PM Jess McGuire | Not only has Chris Lilley managed to hit the ARIA charts with his ‘Naughty Girl’ masterpiece – sure, down to #12 this week but we still suspect he’s got more of a chart future than the poor Young Divas these days – but he’s now one of the contenders for the coveted little gold man at the Australian showbiz glittering night of nights, the Logies! It’s a battle of the golden girls and some of the small screen’s favourite hosts for this year’s Gold Logie, Australian television’s biggest award. ABC Television’s Andrew Denton, Chris Lilley and Adam Hills, and Ten’s Rove McManus will vie against former winners Kate Ritchie and Lisa McCune for this year’s Gold Logie for Australia’s most popular television personality. Neighbours star Natalie Blair and All Saints veteran John Howard round out the nominees. Will he win it? The competition is indeed tough. The lovely Adam Hills is certainly adored by Spicks and Specks fans (and lord knows, the sell out live show the Spicks team toured around the country not that long ago proved there are huuuuuuuge numbers of folk who go weak at the knees for Adam’s affable charms) but are Spicks enthusiasts TV Week readers? Kate Ritchie has obviously won the nation’s heart after clocking in over 20 years at Home & Away, and she’s also now a radio star, so she’s a strong contender. But Rove McManus is an almost – almost – unstoppable Gold Logie winning force most years… although Lisa McCune may “bring it” once more. The John Howard it’s okay to like strikes us as John Wood v2.o (which means we don’t think he’s in with a chance), and we’d like to think Natalie Blair is an outsider for this award, but you never know, people are strange – especially those who vote for the Logies. In short – we’d like to see Chris Lilley win, we’d be pleasantly surprised if Adam Hills pulled it off, we’d expect to see Kate Ritchie, Rove McManus or Lisa McCune delivering a thank you speech, and we’d fall over in shock if John Howard, Andrew Denton or Natalie Blair sauntered off stage clutching the Gold. Vale Pebble Byrne-Denton

1:47PM Jess McGuire | We are sad to report that the Jack Russell terrier belonging to Australia’s favourite clever clogs Jennifer Byrne and Andrew Denton – a pup named Pebble – sadly passed away after being struck by a car in Double Bay on Monday, despite the presence of TV vet Dr Chris Brown at the scene. The TV vet was driving through Double Bay on New South Head Rd when he saw a Jack Russell terrier run across the road into the early morning peak hour traffic and be hit by a car. More »

Kyle Sandilands Prepared To Endure Months Of Furious Prison Shower Bumming Sessions If It Means He Can Punch Dave Hughes In The Throat

4:20PM Jess McGuire | Big man angwee! Big man go punchy punchy! Teach meanie a wesson! Oh, we’re sorry. We probably should have introduced this article about Kylie Sandilands revealing his violent rage toward Dave Hughes to celebrity interviewer extraordinaire Andrew Denton a little better, but really – it’s a pretty apt summary, we feel. Sandilands has promised to punch Hughes in the throat – why the throat and not the face we’re not sure – but he’s intent on causing some physical pain when they eventually cross paths. What sounds like a typical Sandilands grab for headlines could end up as an interesting time for Channel Ten execs as both personalities feature on the network. The grumpy Idol judge is irate at Hughes, who appears on Rove most Sunday nights, for calling him a “dickhead”. “I don’t care if I go to jail for three months, that guy needs a punch in the throat. Simple,” Sandilands trumpeted on his 2DAY FM breakfast show with Jackie O. The outburst yesterday follows Sandiland’s appearance on Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope. Denton played a clip from the 2007 Logie Awards, where Hughes (say it through your nose, it’s a more authentic way to pronounce his name) called Sandilands “a massive dickhead”. The Australian Idol judge returned fire with: “I hate him – the next time I see him I’m going to punch him in the throat.” We can just see it now. It’s the 2007 ARIA Awards after party, and Kyle is lining up for his turn to graze at the party pies table. Finally, he shuffles to the front and prepares to dine – when, out of nowhere, he sees a rogue arm move in and grab the last remaining pastry! He looks up and to the left – up, and to the left – and sees a sauce-smeared grin on Hughesy’s face as the Rove and Nova star swallows the last bite of his snack. “Seeeeeeeeriously, Kyyyyyyyyyle, I didn’t knoooow you waaaaaaannid iiiiiiit that bad!” he wails in mock-apology, “and yew don’t look liiiiike you neeeeed more poooooyze aaaanneeeeewaaaaaaaay! Seeeeeeeeriously, ya diiiickhead!” And what does Kyle do? Mumbles something about a migraine, pulls his Sean John baseball cap over his eyes, and slinks off to the men’s toilets to cry quietly in the cubicle. Poor Kyle :( More »

Celebrity Singing Voice Hypotheticals (Part One In A Ridiculous Ongoing Series)

2:55PM Jess McGuire | It struck us this morning as we listened to the soothing sounds of our iPod’s Monday morning playlist (yes, there is a specific playlist dedicated to pushing us through the pain of the beginning of the working week) that it would be nice to match up a non-warbling celebrity with the musical voice we believe they’d have if, in fact, they ever approached a microphone and chose to belt out a number or three for our entertainment. Our first conclusion in this farcical segment? Andrew Denton would sound like Paul Kelly. That is all. More »
