Defamer Australia Versus Australian Idol Winner Wes Carr

12:44PM Jess McGuire | I don’t know how I pulled it off, but I managed to trick the good folk from Sony BMG into letting me interview Wes Carr today. He was a very nice young man, and we talked about loads of things including religion, Ben Gillies, Ricki-Lee’s love life, and other stuff I can’t be bothered remembering because you’ll find out soon enough. I’ve transcribed the first part of my interview for you (you’ll have to wait for the rest, I’m afraid. I’m a woman on the go! Time is valuable! I really need some sort of work experience kid to treat as a slave, then I could force them to sit down with a recording of an interview and write out the scintillating conversation…) and you can read it after the jump. Letter From The Editor

9:32AM Jess McGuire | Beloved readers, I have some news for you. Prepare yourselves, sit down (as if you’re on a computer while standing up, although maybe you are one of those weird people with internet connections in your fridge door or whatever), and maybe prepare a hanky. Our dear Associate Editor Clem Bastow is leaving us. OMG WAT!!!!!1!! NOEEEEEEEEEES!!!1! I know, I know. JOSS MACGIRUE AN CLAM BESTOF IN HAPPIER TIMES Clem has been a fantastic member of the Allure Media family since mid last year, delivering the blog goods daily in her own inimitable style. Always good for a quick James Blunt related Photoshop gag, a devotee of Australia’s Next Top Model (and pretty much our Couture Correspondent), and a woman charmingly obsessed with James Spargo from this year’s Australian Idol, she is – truthfully – irreplacable. So we won’t even bother trying. Clem’s off to continue her freelance career in The Proper Media TM, as well as continue working as editor of the Australia feminist blog The Dawn Chorus, delivering the goods on RRR, and caning it in the kitchen as she continues “soon-to-be-world-dominating cottage industry jam experiment”. Oh, she’s also appearing in this year’s Melbourne Fringe Festival (her show is nearly sold out, but try to get along to it if you can!), and god! Probably a million other things as she’s an extremely busy woman! Now before you start listening to emo tunes and gently scratching at your wrists with a blunt LadyBic, she may still pop on here now and then with the odd Idol-related thoughts, or if I end up in drug and alcohol rehab and am unable to blog for a week, but we’re going to have to say goodbye to her day to day genius. Best of luck to you, dear, and on behalf of everyone at Allure Media, I hope it all falls on its arse so you end up back here. JUST KIDDING. You’ll be a wonder, as ever. Feel free to mourn her passing in the comments, Clam Bestof obsessives. I’ll be writing more to try and make up for her virtual passing, but it just won’t be the same AND THERE’S NO NEED TO HAMMER THAT FACT HOME, I’M NO CLEM AND I NEVER WILL BE. Pass me my LadyBic, I’ll be in the bath – Britney Spears’ Everytime style. x More »

Australian Idol Round-Up: Australia, This Is Your Final 12

9:11AM Clem Bastow | While it took team Defamer a little while to get over the tragedy of a) James Spargo not getting through to the Top 12 and a.i) James Spargo actually turning out to be a bit shit (although he gets points for saying his baby son could “put it in lots of different holes” when discussing what genre he tends towards), last night the 2008 Final 12 was revealed (eight of them have already been bought domain names by Sony BMG) and, gee whiz, what a bunch of champeens they are. (Also, the Cadbury gorilla ad ISN’T FUNNY ANYMORE, so imagine what it’ll feel like in two months’ time!) Let’s hold hands and head over the jump to discuss their prospects, shall we? More »

Australian Idol: It Can’t Be Long Now Before Things Actually Get Interesting, Right? Right?

9:15AM Jess McGuire | Last night’s Wild Card episode wasn’t enough to keep me in the house, the lure of Japanese food and my friend Booky’s text message stating “You know Idol is shit, come to tea” overpowering my original desire to remain couch-bound and Marcia’d up to the eyeballs, but thanks to the wonders of technology, I was able to view the performances once I got home and I’ve gotta say… I’m not overly enthusiastic about any of the singers (James Spargo makes me want to go a little punchy actually, ever since the audition episodes where he cried at the drop of a hat) but if Roshani doesn’t make it into the Top Twelve, I will boycott the show for the rest of the season*. Watch her performance, and soak up more vapid thoughts from Your Editor, after the jump. *Note: When push comes to shove, I probably won’t stand by this vow. More »

Is Sony BMG Cybersquatting Idol Domain Names?

12:26PM Clem Bastow | Given that last year Sony BMG could barely bring themselves to sign Idol winner Natalie Gauci (and then half-heartedly offered a contract to Matt Corby, which he duly rejected), one could assume the grand old days of five or six finalists ending up with a deal of one form or another were well and truly over. But could the label be placing its bets on certain Idol ‘08 contestants’ future success by cybersquatting, if you will, their official domain names? One eagle-eyed Defamer informant seems to think that’s the case. So said the mysterious and no doubt handsome Robert in an email to us: After watching the first episode I decided to look up some of the contestants domain names and found that Sony was the owner. Australian Idol Round-Up: It Continueth

11:00AM Clem Bastow | So we’re now two days into 2008’s edition of Australian Idol and already I’m reaching saturation point. Is slamming us with six solid nights of auditions a good way to begin a season? Jump over the, er, jump and we can discuss last night’s effort. More »

Australian Idol Round-Up: It Beginneth

10:30AM Clem Bastow | So, Australian Idol has begun – they couldn’t even wait until after the Olympics closing ceremony, such was the enthusiasm of another year of hopefuls – and was it everything the incredible, Jacksons-aping, James Spargo-highlighting promos made it out to be? Let’s hold hands and go over the jump to discuss Idol’s opening salvo. More »

Preemptive Australian Idol Round-Up: SMS Will Be Charged At 50c Per Message

10:49AM Clem Bastow | So it’s now T-minus three days and counting until Australian Idol hits our airwaves once more, and I am personally eagerly waiting for the Coming Of God (aka James Spargo) but Channel Ten have SIX DAYS of auditions all up in this bitch; from Sunday to Friday they’ll be wheeling out their best loonies and young girls singing Whitney Houston songs and making Marcia cry. Ten have also announced changes to the voting system that will mean Monday elimination nights will begin with a “last chance” sing-off for the bottom three contestants: The three facing elimination will take to the stage to perform once more in “a last-ditch effort to win over the audience, build on their vote and prove worthy to continue the Idol journey”. After their performances, the voting lines will re-open, to enable Australia to save their favourite two singers. Then co-hosts James Mathison and Andrew G will join them on stage to reveal the contestant leaving the competition. While this looks like a fair go for all, all it really means is mo’ money for Ten, which is unsurprising, but I’d like to take a moment to discuss what is possibly the most terrifying publicity photo I have ever seen: More »

Preemptive Australian Idol Round-Up: James Spargo Is Your New God

11:28AM Clem Bastow | After everyone enjoyed our first Australian Idol 2008 missive yesterday, I couldn’t stop watching the Idol promo – and, like many of you, became fascinated by the winning chap at the 0:27 mark, whose performance of the line “loving each other wholeheartedly” is sure to go down in the annals of Australian music as one of its greatest moments. Well, another Idol promo/teaser has surfaced that gives us a little more of an insight into this champion (as well as 23 of his fellow entrants; whatever). Ladies and gentlemen, at the 0:27 mark (again!) and 0:54, I give you James Spargo: More »
