Another day, another brouhaha due to someone posting something stupid on Twitter. The latest celebrity to cop a serve after saying something offensive in 140 characters or less is swimmer Stephanie Rice, who was so thrilled by the Wallabies’ win over South Africa on Saturday night she decided to call the Springboks “faggots”. Oh, Steph. I’m going to have to side with league legend Ian Roberts here – you’re an idiot.

Rugby great Ian Roberts has slammed Olympic swimmer Stephanie Rice as a “complete idiot” after the sporting pin-up girl posted an anti-gay comment on her Twitter page. Remarking after the Wallabies’ two-point win over the Springboks in South Africa on Saturday night, Rice – who has left the Commonwealth Games team due to injury – tweeted: “Suck on that f**gots,” adding: “Probably the best game I’ve ever seen!! Well done boys.”
The comment, which Rice has since removed, stunned Roberts who yesterday called for sponsors to question their support of the glamour-girl swimmer.
“She is an idiot … and anyone who continues to endorse her as an athlete is an idiot as well,” Roberts fumed. “And I say that with a very sad tone in my voice. What a fool. And if her sponsors don’t do something about it, they’re fools as well.”
Ian, relax! She just really, really likes her rugby!
Acknowledging her comment later, Rice wrote; “Okay so maybe I got a bit too excited before!! But I love seeing Australians do well”.
Who doesn’t? Only a faggot would begrudge the Wallabies a win. SORRY YOU GUYS, I JUST GOT A BIT EXCITED! WE’LL LAUGH ABOUT THIS LATER!
But Roberts, one of only a handful of openly gay athletes and a devoted gay-rights advocate, dismissed it as “inexcusable”.
“I also like seeing Australians do well,” he said. “But it is never acceptable to belittle gay people.”
In conclusion, Ian Roberts is great and Stephanie Rice should probably take a long hard look at herself and her vocabulary.

total over-reaction by the media. so what if she used the words faggot? it was an apt description. Faggots engage in oral sex. This involves sucking. So to tell the yarpies (south african rugby team) to “suck on that faggots” was to allude to sucking on a sour-tasting defeat. This is precisely what is wrong with celebrity sports. It is to be expected that white trash like Stephanie speaks with such vernacular – without any thought or regard for others. After all, nobody expects to enage a sportsperson in intelligent conversation. What is horrible is the manner in which the media have taken the words of some dumb going-to-seed cow and given them prominence in order to ‘move units’. I wonder what would have happened if she’d called them cunts?
