Some Of The Greatest Australian Pop Songs Of All Time (Part One)

For reasons that will be made clear in a future post, I have asked the good people of Twitter to suggest some of the greatest Australian pop songs of all time. To say the response was overwhelming would be an understatement. If you’d like to put in your two cents, either email me (tips AT defamer.com.au) or send me a reply on Twitter (@jessmcguire). In the meantime, let’s take a look at what folks have come up with so far.

In no particular order…

GERLING – DUST ME SELECTA
(Shout out to my former breakfast radio co-host Dave Lawson who plays the role of Dude Wearing The Headphones in this clip!)

JO JO ZEP & THE FALCONS – SHAPE I’M IN

SWOOP – APPLE EYES
(Fun fact! Apparently the lead singer is staying in John Safran’s spare room as we speak!)

MELISSA TKAUTZ – READ MY LIPS
(“If you wanna wait til later, hands off my detonator” – greatest song lyric of all time? Obviously YES.)

AUSTRALIAN CRAWL – RECKLESS

AUSTRALIAN CRAWL – ERROL

KYLIE MINOGUE – CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD
(To be honest, you could probably include most of Kylie’s hit singles in this list. Confide In Me? Spinning Around? Better The Devil You Know? Shocked? Personally, I’ve always been extremely partial to Put Yourself In My Place. Heartbreaking perfection!)

MERRIL BAINBRIDGE – MOUTH
(This song is the soundtrack to me being completely smitten with my first proper boyfriend.)

ICEHOUSE – ELECTRIC BLUE
(Mindblowing song, mindblowing mullets.)

REGURGITATOR – ! (THE SONG FORMERLY KNOWN AS)

THE CHURCH – UNDER THE MILKY WAY

MEN AT WORK – DOWN UNDER

DRAGON – RAIN

THE MAVIS’S – CRY

More coming! Give me your suggestions!
