Sam Worthington’s Efforts To Be Charmingly Blokey Doesn’t Quite Work At The Oscars

One of my biggest hates in the world is people chewing gum at inappropriate times. I remember The Superjesus winning an ARIA back in the nineties, and all I could think while I watch Sarah McLeod give an acceptance speech was “Is that… is that gum she’s chewing? That’s REVOLTING.” I thought the very same thing while watching Sam Worthington at the Oscars yesterday.

Sam Worthington’s presenter turn at the Academy Awards left many cold, particularly those who believe it’s a mistake to chew gum while presenting on an international stage. Worthington presented an award with an immaculate Jennifer Lopez while grinding his jaw ceaselessly.

Grinding his jaw ceaselessly, eh? That’s an interesting choice of words – and they’re normally only used to describe someone on drugs. I wonder if that’s what the Daily Telegraph is trying to insinuate?

Earlier he made a dashing appearance on the red carpet with girlfriend Natalie Mark on his arm. When asked what he was wearing, Worthington said: “Payless shoes and a friggin’ kickarse suit.”

When pushed to name the suit’s designer he responded: “Some bloke.”

Sam Worthington’s “just an average down to earth Aussie bloke who refuses to get his head turned by the glitz and glamour of showbiz” act is beginning to get old and weird.

I met Sam – very briefly, it wouldn’t have been a memorable experience for him – on a big night out back in late 2005 in Melbourne, and I don’t remember him having such a ridiculously over the top personality. He seemed like a pretty nice guy. I’m sure he still is, so it’d be really great to see him do an interview without sounding like truck driver living in the western suburbs of Sydney… in the 1950s.

I met Sam in 2003 at a filmmaking workshop out in the Western Suburbs of Sydney and he was an absolute arrogant prick.

This is all an elaborate act, he has only started using this voice very recently.
I bet the person that gave him the suit won’t be so forthcoming next time.
The whole living in his car bit is just bullshit and he knows it.
Oh and yeah, he’s a prick.

The whole jaw grinding thing was probably the cause of nerves, I doubt he was chewing gum when presenting. And how is being normal and down to earth considered over the top? It’s a breath of fresh air compared to all the plastic schmoozey falseness of most Hollywood actors.

  • SW

Yep – I have it on VERY good authority from an Aussie industry heavyweight that he’s the whole package… dumb, arrogant AND rude! He’s gonna go far, that boy…

Man people here are really hateful and just plain stupid. Just because Worthington is a down to earth guy who dosent do all the fake stuck up celebrity attitude(george Clooney anyone) dosent make him a prick. Thats who he is and I find it refreshing. He seems like a cool guy and i hope he continues to make movies.

omg. chewing gum?! how inappropriate! time for him to go on time out! LMFAO. seriously, people need to grow some balls and stop caring so god damn much about what OTHER PEOPLE THINK… who gives a flying ph***k.

seriously, you’re life doesn’t depend on what other people think of you. if you wanna chew gum, then chew gum. your mommy stopped telling you what to do once you turned 18.

  • jon

agreed with glen. when did everyone become such a vag? chewing gum is rude? let’s all hail, bow down, and kneel to the “oh so mighty” Oscars. how dare he disrespect the Academy Awards like that. If you put the opinion of others on such a high pedestal than you should just go and kill yourselves now, cuz you are useless.

Hey “Jon” – I love how you agreed with Glen before Glen’s comment had even been published. Whether your point is valid or not JonGlen, it’s completely fucking sad you just made up a fake name to agree with yourself on the internet.
