Unexpected mates alert! Did you realise that Richie Benaud and lead singer of AC/DC (and well-known Whitney Houston hater) Brian Johnson are pals? Who go golfing together? Cos they are. Gracious!

They are possibly the oddest couple to stroll the manicured fairways of Royal Sydney Golf Club. When Brian Johnson, the flat-capped lead singer of AC/DC, visited Sydney with the band last month during the Australian leg of their Black Ice tour, he did not pass up the opportunity to look up an old friend for a quick 18 holes. So it was that Johnson and Australia’s voice of cricket, Richie Benaud, were spotted by curious club members sharing a golf cart at the exclusive Rose Bay club.

While Channel Nine was unable to confirm the sighting, the tour promoter, the Van Egmond Group, was happy to do so. ”All we know is that Richie Benaud is apparently an old mate,” its commercial director, Christo Van Egmond, told the Diary yesterday. ”They caught up in Sydney and hence the game of golf.”

As far as I’m concerned, this makes all parties involved go up considerably in my estimation. Which I’m sure Richie Benaud and Brian Johnson will be glad to hear. This story could only have been better if George Michael was playing with them, and they made Whitney Houston work as their caddy for the day.
