The Australian Family Association Should Be Grateful John Safran Isn’t Wanking 24/7

John Safran’s new show Safran’s Race Relations is going to be hitting the small screen on Wednesday night, and the papers are almost hyperventilating with excitement. Sniffing of Mahalia Barnes’ knickers? Masturbating to photos of Barack Obama? It all sounds pleasingly controversial.

Reports the Daily Telegraph:

It takes just nine minutes for John Safran and the ABC to plunge to new “comedic” depths this week.

Under the notion of exploring his attraction to Eurasians, Mr Safran is filmed stealing the underwear of prominent Australian women – actress Dichen Lachman and singer Mahalia Barnes, among others – before sniffing them in a science laboratory.

The distasteful sketch features in the debut episode of John Safran’s Race Relations, due to be screened on Wednesday.

Safran won’t be surprised if the public join the Daily Telegraph in finding the sketch “distasteful” although as far as he’s concerned, it’s rather tame.

Mr Safran said he expected some backlash over the series debut, in which he is also shown masturbating to an image of US President Barack Obama.

“I thought episode one was my mainstream episode … maybe I got it wrong? There’s seven and three-quarter episodes where I’m not masturbating. I can’t be any more accommodating than that,” he said.

The “You’re lucky I wasn’t wanking through the whole series” response is fantastic and hilarious and I thoroughly approve.

Probably won’t please this fellow, though.

Australian Family Association spokesman John Morrissey described the show as “filth”.

“It’s the lowest point in Australian television history,” he said.

Just remind me, dear readers – did the Australian Family Association express dismay or concern when the whole Hey Hey/Jackson Jive debacle happened?

I have a sneaking suspicion they let that particular incident pass without comment.

PS: Can someone tape Race Relations for me?

  • Context is everything. I wish people would watch something before condemning it.

It may very well be distasteful filth, but we cannot possibly know until it has been viewed.

  • Hirsty

Oh I’m watching it for the tasty filth.

  • J Saf

    Hi Jess,

Good to talk on RRR this morn!

    Peace Be Upon You, John

  • Yeah … I read that as rape relations. Stupid Mondays!

It’s interesting to note that the AFA spokeperson said the exact same thing for an article published last Thursday.

However, the quote was preceded by: “Though he hadn’t seen it, the Australian Family Association’s John Morrissey labelled Safran’s show offensive and…” etc [http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,,26212854-10229,00.html]

‘The lowest point in Australian television history’?

Did none of them see DOG’S HEAD BAY?

  • The lowest point in Australian television history, without a doubt, was when Nine executives green lit A Current Affair in 1971.

“did the Australian Family Association express dismay or concern when the whole Hey Hey/Jackson Jive debacle happened?”

No indeed, but perhaps the said Association would have done so–and note the alliteration–had a prominent promotion preceded the piece.

  • Sarah

I always say, if the AFA is against it then it must be at least worth a look. Besides, every nutbag organisation and its dog has had a whinge about something John Safran has done at some point… he probably had to go all out trying to offend someone this time!

  • Belle

well i may have given myself happy times to john safran before, so now all we need is obama to have a mazz over me and the circle is complete.
