Thoughts On A Couple Of Pop Songs

Since I’ve been in the UK, I have been overwhelmed by the number of lady popstars doing wonderfully well in the British charts. Here are two young women – one English, one American – who seem to be quite popular at the moment. If you haven’t heard of them already, you most certainly will before the year is through.

Firstly, let’s have a listen to Pixie Lott’s “Boys And Girls”.

The official clip isn’t embeddable (Universal Music, I would punch you in the face but you sent me a copy of Florence & The Machine’s album so I kinda owe you one) but if you’d like to see it, click here.

THINGS TO NOTE:

- The song is catchy, but not in a retarded nursery rhyme kinda way. Children will probably find it appealing, but so will adults who harbour secret dreams of appearing on So You Think You Can Dance? in the near future.
- Look at Pixie. She is youthful, fashionable, and seems like the kind of girl who wouldn’t take shit from anyone. She has ‘attitude’, but she doesn’t make me want to punch her in the face.
- She recently did a photoshoot with the extremely talented Cybele Malinowski which is definitely worth checking out.

In conclusion, I think Pixie Lott is rather good and I would be very supportive if her song began getting flogged on Australian commercial radio.

Our second clip comes from an American girl named Ke$ha and it is called “Tik Tok”.

THINGS TO NOTE:

- I am a bit concerned by the idiotic spelling of her name, but it could be worse. MUCH WORSE. AMIRITE, REGULAR VIEWERS?
- Uh oh, is that Auto-Tune I hear?
- Your rhymes during the verses are freaking me out, Ke$ha.
- On the upside, Ke$ha looks fabulous.
- And she appears to have “attitude”.
- I would probably quite enjoy drinking with her.
- And fuck me, that chorus has NO RIGHT to be as catchy as it is.
- In fact, I’ll forgive the Auto-Tune, bad rhymes, and slightly irritating enunciation during the verses because that chorus is killer.
- I also enjoy the fact Ke$ha has thoughtfully allowed her clip to be embedded into websites. It’s almost as if she wants as many people as possible to view her video conveniently! WHAT A STRANGE CONCEPT. AMIRITE, STUPID RECORD LABELS?

In any case, America and Britain appear to be stepping up to the plate when it comes to giving the world pop stars with the right combination of decent hooks, visual appeal, and basic singing abilities.

At this point, I’d like to remind you of Australia’s very own Pink/Lily Allen hybrid.

AUSTRALIAN RECORD COMPANY EXECUTIVES, LIFT YOUR GAME PLEASE.

Jessica ‘Cocksucking’ Mauboy cannot carry the burden of delivering half decent R&B with mass appeal on her own forever, you know. Shows like Australian Idol are running out of steam, and when they finally stop coughing up girls with dreams of being Beyonce, you’re screwed. Please, for the love of god, start looking for decent singers and then let them work with decent songwriters and then give them more than $2.70 to make a video clip.

No more toddler rap – Australia deserves better.

Comments

  • Uffie called from 2007 and said she wants Ke$ha to quit biting. Aside from that it is catchy.

  • Hey. There was at least $3.20 worth there.
    Did you interview her yet?
