Tila Tequila’s Twitter Attacks Not Best Idea

Tila Tequila has mastered of technological self-promotion. It helped her infect popular culture. Now, in the wake of her domestic violence drama with football player Shawn Merriman, she’s back in the saddle to defend her name. But she really shouldn’t.

Tequila obviously feels the need to defend herself from Merriman, who, through his lawyer, released a statement claiming he was trying to stop a booze-saturated Tequila from driving drunk:

At the time, I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided. We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety.

See? That’s how you do it: you create shadows of doubt by making yourself look like the do-gooder maligned by a drunken terror. Tequila should take note, for her brand of mudslinging is coming off a bit, well, unhinged.

Taking on Merriman’s claims that she was drunk at the time of the incident, Tequila tweeted:

I am allergic to alcohol. It has been publicly known for years. That is how I got the name Tila ‘Tequila’ cuz the irony. I can’t drink.

As happens in the high-speed age of technology, it wasn’t long until that story was called into question, what with the owner of the nightclub where it went down described Tequila as “visibly intoxicated.”

But no matter, because Tequila’s not only defending herself: she’s totally going on the offensive against Merriman, and posted this vague, possibly defamatory message: “Steroid use makes people act aggressive….known fact.” She also linked to an article on the subject.

Honestly, Ms. Tequila, you need to learn when to step back from the keyboard and let someone else do the talking. You’re not exactly the most respected woman in the news, so if you want to garner public favour, you should exercise some restraint. But what do we know? We’ve never had a reality show.

This is kinda like Jalopnik asking Ford to stop making cars, no?

Tila wrote tweets that night saying she was drunk, which does a little bit more than call her story into question:

In retrospect "I'm allergic to knives" seems like a perfect argument for the OJ trial.

Haha, people only like her 'cause they've seen her tits.

@mattchew03: The subsequent and sprawling conversations on the topic of "Asian glow" on that page are absolutely the find of the century.

Funny, it has also been publicly known that you're absolutely disgusting and a VH1 landfill find for years too!

I'm legitimately curious as to if I could have a woman arrested if I claim she hit me in her house.

  • heywhat

Tweeting that allergic to alcohol excuse was not a good idea. There are post popping up everywhere that prove she is lying. She even tweeting about being drunk a couple of days ago. And there are old pictures of her from Myspace were she is clearly drinking/drunk. All of that doesn't matter because if she was abused then he was in the wrong. Period. Just saying, she should probably get a publicist and an attorney not just publicity from this.

@Defeater: Yep. If there's any indication that you were telling the truth, you definitely could.

  • RachelSklar

"You're not exactly the most respected woman in the news" - careful, that's a slippery slope to equating "respectability" with "likelihood of being abused" which is neither fair nor accurate. For what it's worth, here's a 2007 NYmag article where she makes the "allergic to alcohol" claim, but says that she will occasionally drink: [newyork.grubstreet.com]

Of course, without more information it's hard to say either way. That's why the word "alleged" was invented.

  • mattchew03

@RachelSklar: She made tweets that night claiming to be drunk. I don't think we need any additional information.

    Question

Alcohol allergy: Is there such a thing?
Is there such a thing as alcohol allergy? After drinking just one alcoholic beverage, I get a rash all over and I throw up.

    Answer
from James T. Li, M.D., The Mayo Clinic

Some people are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol than are others. However, this doesn't mean you have an alcohol allergy.

A true food allergy involves your immune system. In such cases, your immune system mistakenly identifies a specific food or a component of that food as a harmful substance. Your immune system triggers certain cells to produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to fight the "enemy" food or food component. Signs and symptoms of food allergy include tingling in the mouth, hives, breathing difficulties, and swelling of your lips, tongue or throat.

An alcohol allergy would be very uncommon. However, you could be allergic to other ingredients in an alcoholic beverage, such as wheat or sulfur dioxide, a preservative. There are also substances in some alcohol beverages such as wine that can cause flushing or even rashes.

Still, it's more likely that you have an alcohol intolerance — which means you are more sensitive to the normal effects of alcohol. Alcohol can cause a variety of immediate adverse effects on the body, including headache, rapid heartbeat, nausea or vomiting, heartburn, abdominal pain, nasal congestion, or warm, red, itchy skin.

Many people of Asian descent experience an unusual flushing reaction after drinking alcohol — even in very small amounts. This is caused by a genetic disorder in which the body is unable to break down alcohol completely. Some research suggests that people who experience alcohol flush reaction may be at increased risk of alcohol-related conditions, such as cancer of the esophagus and liver disease.

The only solution to all of these problems is to avoid alcohol.

Rarely, severe pain following alcohol ingestion may be a sign of a more serious underlying disorder, such as Hodgkin's disease — also known as Hodgkin's lymphoma. If you experience unusual symptoms after ingesting alcohol, consult your doctor.

Ick, this is all so awkward. On one hand, she's a total asshat if she was under the influence and decided to drive regardless. She's also a douchequeen for automatically trying to invalidate his response with a simple, and until submission of further proof uncalled for, cry of 'roid raged athelete.

On the other hand, I can think of at least 20 other ways to keep a friend/loved one from driving drunk that don't involved choking anyone.

I withhold judgement until more facts are known. However, she's still an ugly shovelfaced cunt.

@RachelSklar: There was no such connection made. It was merely pointed out that you aren't doing your cause any favors if your reaction contradicts information you've previously release, and that any further "press releases" should probably be handled by those much more skilled at it who won't say such stupid things.

@RachelSklar: I'm a bit tired of slippery slope arguments myself. (The public option is a slippery slope to a Marxist state, etc.) Is it possible to opposed sexual abuse in all of its forms AND think Tila Tequila is exploiting sexual objectification (as well as this abuse incident) to feed at the fringes of the public's deranged obsession with fame?

Somebody tell this dipshit that we are ALL "allergic" to alcohol--thus the inebriating effects. Ethanol = poison to the body human.
