Disney Buys Marvel, Now In Business With Every Hollywood Studio

It was announced today that Disney shelled out $US4 billion for Marvel Entertainment, Inc. Not only does it now own Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Iron Man, but is also in business with almost every Hollywood studio. What a tangled web!

More important than printing comics (which, they actually still do!), Marvel is valuable for the merchandising and movie rights to all it’s characters—over 5000—many of which have become the massive film franchises that are the lifeblood of the movie studios. The only two studios that aren’t dependent on Marvel for summer tentpoles are Disney and Warner Bros. (which bought out DC Comics and its stable of characters including Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman). Paramount has Iron Man, Sony’s long been living off Spider-Man, 20th Century Fox lives and dies by how many X-Men,Wolverine, or Fantastic Four films it can spin out and Universal would like you to like The Hulk.

All of a sudden, those studios have just discovered that Disney may be in control of their summer fates. Welcome to your new groveling life, studio executives.

I marvel at Disney's theme park
Where heroes all sing like a lark
    When Iron Man and Thor
    Take to the dance floor
The difference will surely be Stark.

@Lincolnsbeard33: Stan Lee's always been in it for the money. Just ask Jack Kirby, who probably is turning over in his grave right now.

@SwatLax: That's the same thing I thought of when I heard the news. What will Universal do now? They can't just change The Incredible Hulk to - The Giant Green Man. They may have to take out the rides all together.

@Lincolnsbeard33: I disagree, but not for the reasons you think. I'm not focusing on the Disneyification of Marvel, but rather looking at the one other successful Disney property geared toward young males - ESPN. I fear the ESPNification of Marvel will not be a good thing.

Is this the end of the $20 million club? At this weekend's box office, the top two performers -- Final Destination and Halloween 2 -- the *stars* are the horrific special effects and 3-D technology. Is this the rise of the un-celebrity? Can we expect to see a Captain America Vanity Fair cover in the near future in which the films star is covered up by red, white and blue pajamas?

And if you've been following the Superman legal battle, which will put all rights to the character in the hands of his creator's family in 2011, you'd note that DC may lose the character and that the rights to his story can then be purchased by the highest bidder, such as Disney/Marvel. Wow.

Imagine Disney controlling the most idolized fictional character in world history. Incredible.

@DennyCrane: drama much? If you knew anything about Disney or Marvel you would know that this is going to be a good thing.

@♥Anti-SocialSocialite♥: and Except for the whole part that Stan Lee already made a deal to develop for Disney earlier this year, you're well completely wrong.

Sometime after I graduated from college, I realized that most of what I knew about the underpinnings of oppression I first learned from reading Marvel comics. Xenophobia, homophobia, racial discrimination. All from reading Marvel.
Being an outsider and having to deal with it. Marvel (and "The Chocolate Wars").

Even now, when I think about who is taking a good and close look at the changes the U.S. is going through I think of Marvel. They killed Captain America, sent the Punisher to the White House, staged a Civil War between super heroes, and they have a villain running the Avengers. And, now they're run by Disney.

I can take newspapers going out of business and a media industry that’s sold out to business interests, but the impending death of the myths and legends from my childhood…Goddamn.

Not sure how I feel about this other than to say, perhaps it won't be so bad. Disney loves a franchise. There have been 1700 Pirate of the Caribbean movies. And that could be lucrative for Marvel, but baaaad for the "less is more" concept of comic book films. but, you know, maybe I'll hold my dismay in reserve at least until they marry two woefully bad ideas, Johnny Depp + Spawn.

@Cannot Find Server: Except for the whole part about his still being alive, you're probably right.

Stan Lee is probably turning over in his grave.

...so until Goofy gets bitten by a radioactive deer tick and joins X-force, Make Mine Marv...oh, fuck it. never mind.

  • Macloserboy

Wow, the geek whining took no time, did it? God forbid this leads to Pixar getting their hands on Marvel properties, because they did such a lousy job with their Fantastic Four/Watchmen mash-up, The Incredibles. That'll never compare to excellent work done on Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider, The Punisher...

    Oh, wait...

  • iplaudius

Finally, Disney will have the means to produce the Mickey Mouse comics everyone has been waiting for all these years.

Of that $4 billion, it's rumored that Stan Lee received one half-price admission to Epcot Center (with one full-price purchase only).

What does this mean for Joe Jonas's hopes of playing Wonder Woman?

What is going to happen with all the Marvel themed rides at Universal Studios? Its the biggest competition for Disney World in Orlando.

NOOOOOOO!!!! I was so, so, so proud of growing up and appreciating the more working class and realistic world Marvel characters reside in and shunning Disney. Now, the Mighty Marvel Bullpen is infested family friendly mice! NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
