American Apparel Ad Succeeds
Ho hum, the UK Advertising Standards Authority has banned an American Apparel ad that ran in Vice magazine for being too much like child porn. Can you imagine anything more cliché?
The standards ruling said the ad “could be seen to sexualise a model who appeared to be a child,” although she is in fact 23. The little pic up top is the actual banned ad, and this non-banned version is clearly the same model, etc. Today is bonus day for the AA marketing people.

Some of the comments below (I won't name names) are kind of weirding me out. I'm not one to be prude, but... I dunno.
@Voyou_Charmant: I'm pretty sure the small beer-gut is one of the newer accessories favored by hipsters. It works out, somehow.
@Pope John Peeps II: yes, I'm 30 and I get carded all the time still, a while ago I chalked this up to the fact that I hardly ever wear makeup. She in no way looks underage to me.
Could someone please explain to me how, going from an ad where half of the images show semi-exposed breasts, to an ad where two-thirds of the images show semi-exposed breasts is supposed to be less sexualizing?

The girl below her, in the top ad, looks much younger tome. And what child has boobs that big and well-formed?
So if its a 14 year old girl that looks like a granny, for example an art school girl taking off an ironic vintage dress, does that make it ok?

@partypants: Not exactly the kind of "help" daddy was looking for--talk about commie-block! That definitely took the "party" out of "partypants" for me.
At least for the moment. ;)
The Lone Scout
@The Lone Scout: Would a joke about a dead baby help? Those usually help. DEAD BABY JOKE. Better?
@partypants: Must. Focus. On. Work. (You're killing me.)
The Lone Scout
@lj68: completely. also nobody fuck the baby-faced 25 year old woman.
shostakobitch
I know older women that look younger than her. Plus she doesn't give off the "young and vulnerable" look as mentioned in the report. I mean, I'd know "young and vulnerable".
@The Lone Scout: Of course! I "helped" him "look" for his "lost puppy"!
@The Lone Scout: Agreed. These comments are missing the "sophomore majoring in women's studies at Oberlin" perspective.
LUV_TRUK
@partypants: I'm sure you were a comfort to him.

Am I seeing things or does the model have on googly-eye glasses in the last two pics of the banned ad? Why no click to enlarge?

At the risk of being labeled a pervert (and having absolutely no defense) it surprises me that no one has mentioned the obvious....this girl is downright HOT. HOT i say. I am almost tempted to quit my job here at the elementary school and simply stalk this child forever. That's enough for now.

@metoometoo: I used to have an assistant who looked like she was about 12 (i didn't hire her fyi) though she was 22. She kept on talking about things her boyfriend would do, like leaving a voicemail for her in a baby talk (which she played for me) she thought it was sweet and everyone else in the office though it seemed like pedophilia. He liked to buy her teddy bears too as I remember.
The Recession Is Over
@Voyou_Charmant: Hey enough jokes about rape wagons. My dad is sensitive.
@Voyou_Charmant: sad :(
@metoometoo: And as for your youthful looks, I'll be the judge of that. Meet me at the corner; I need your help to find my lost kitten/puppy/mojo.
The Lone Scout
@Btwbfdimho: Holy bee hive! That must've stung something fierce.

Ham, this is the third instance of segregation in two days. AA, Ling-Lee, and SJP have all gotten separate posts by separate authors at Gawker and Jezebel. Good fences may make good neighbors, but it also cuts down on the entertainingly gratuitous violence.
The Lone Scout
@metoometoo: Could you please remind him to drop my van off?
@once: ha!
@VoxPopuli: Their shirts are not beer/delicious food-belly friendly.
But this is the UK: they're used to their 23-yr-olds looking like Amy Winehouse (AW=45 in US years). This young woman only looks about 5 to them, put a cigarette in her mouth, 10, tops
once
@metoometoo: It doesn't, unless he picks you up for dates in a van with the words "free candy" painted on the side.

i finally broke down and bought some stuff from AA... i didn't want to but it was my only option at the time.
I HATE to admit this but the leggings, t shirt for yoga and the romper i got for laying a round the house while it was stll hot... fit SO SO WELL. and are so so comfortable *SIGH*
Their hoodie sweatshirts are awesome and the only thing worth going to American Apparel for. I've heard their T-shirts are good too, but I hate the way they fit, so bleh.
Their ads suck big donkey balls, which come to think of it, will likely be the theme of their next campaign. (With the tagline ASS).
I'm 24 and I'm pretty sure I look younger than that model. I don't think that makes my boyfriend a pedophile, though.
Goddamn it, if you're going to use sex to sell products so blatantly, please make the people look like they might possibly be slightly interested in sex some day. The look on that lady is one step above asleep.
AndPreciousLittleofThat
@Pope John Peeps II: +1. I'm just waiting for some self important douche to show up in this thread calling us all pedophiles.
It's my belief that those guys actually have HUGE collections of child porn, and have deluded themselves into thinking that posting about this shit keeps the heat off them.
@secretagentman: She Got They Boobieâ„¢
What sort of fucking idiot can't see that girl's age?
People today are so warped by makeup and disgusting beauty standards that they have lost any and all ability to judge a beautiful, natural woman's appearance and so reflexively think that anyone fresh-faced must necessarily be portraying a nubile lolita.
Can I just say that although she does look young, at least she looks like she eats, which is unfortunately rare for models.
pattycakes
@lobstr: What am I looking for?
secretagentman
Isn't this true of all models? (Sorry, Tatiana!)
daveyjonesisdead
Didn't Calvin Klein do this in the 80s?
pony_express
Only one thing comes to mind.
