Kyle And Jackie O “Suspended Indefinitely”

As you’d all be well aware by now, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O have been suspended from the airwaves “indefinitely” following last week’s scandal involving a fourteen year old girl and a lie detector. Happy days!

From the ABC:

The Kyle and Jackie O radio show has been suspended indefinitely after last week’s controversial lie detector stunt, with host Kyle Sandilands declaring he is unable to go on air. There have been calls for 2Day FM’s Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show to be axed by the station’s owners, Austereo, since Wednesday when a 14-year-old girl was strapped to a lie-detector and asked on air about her sexual history.

So that’s good news for anyone with ears and a brain. Here’s the bit that gets me though.

In a statement on Sunday evening, Austereo publicity manager Kate Whitby said: “Kyle Sandilands’ management has advised Austereo that he is unable to perform his duties on-air at this time.

“Further, following a great deal of consideration and having consulted Jackie O and all stakeholders, Austereo has formed the view that it is in the interest of all parties, for the Kyle and Jackie O Show to go into recess until we have completed an across-the-networks review of the principals (sic) and protocols of our interaction with our audience. This review commenced last Wednesday, July 29.”

There would be no further comment from Austereo, Ms Whitby said.

Wait a minute… it doesn’t seem to me like Kyle has been punished at all by Austereo. It sounds as though he’s the one who has decided not to go on air, and Austereo has decided against finding a new co-host for Jackie O and instead chose to take the program off the air altogether.

While I’m stoked they’re no longer broadcasting their particular brand of vile and cheap radio out into the world, it’s not quite as satisfying if Kyle Sandilands chose to stop doing the show. The angry mob wants justice! Blood! I brought my good pitchfork with me and everything! That said, the fact that Austereo are using the opportunity to review the “principals (sic)” of their stations is undeniably a good and unexpected thing.

Also! I have half-written a giant rant about Australian radio in general. It is dangerously close to a Jerry Maguire-ish manifesto. I am happy to share it with you if you’re at all interested in what I have to say. Otherwise we can just focus on spectacular cat videos on YouTube. Up to you! I don’t want to shove my righteous views down your throat.

OMG BUT UR A BLOGGER LOL

You’re right. I should simply finish it and bang it online.

    Seconded.

Or thirded – which ever comes first.

Rant away I say, that is the intention of this site is it not, to hide our rants under a guise of social commentary? I am having troubles trying to locate big corporates that sponsor this show (besides Optus) so any help from those in blogland please feel free to pass the dutchie on de left hand side.

You could no doubt incorporate Australian TV into a muse on all that is wrong with our airwaves. The existence of goddamn awful shows like Australia’s Next Top Model serve to highlight how dumb our next generation of recalcitrants are, and unfortunately they have figured out how to use a remote. The movie ‘Idiocracy’ is a rapidly increasing example of life imitating art, and the scary thing is that it will one day be the labotomised listeners of Pubeface and The Ho that will be in positions of authority in our society.

    Please do publish it Jess,

I would really like to think that your comments on this issue carried some weight.

You are an example of someone successful (well we think so anyway) who doesn’t see the need to create misery or put people down to produce interesting and humourous material.

  • Nah, lets talk about Short Stack some more instead :)

    1. Austereo mgnt advised Kyle and Jackie O that their show would now be subject to a 7 sec delay, that a member of mgnt would be present in the control room at all times, and that Kyle had to agree to spend a greater propotion of the broadcasts physically in the studio with Jackie O.
    2. Argy- Bargy ensued, Kyle rejected the 7 sec delay and the mgnt presence. Jackie accepted the terms.
    3. No agreement could be reached. Kyle spins it as “unable to perform his duties”, station says “show going on hiatus for retooling”.
    4. Negotiations continue.

  • Scott M

By ‘retooling’ do the mean finding tools as big as, if not bigger, than the ones they previously hosting?

    • SimianSays

      Ha! ‘Retooling’! Now that’s funny!

  • ella fitzgerald

    publish and be damned!

  • LL

    Please publish.

I love an articulate & well-reasoned rant…particularly when I know the views held are likely aligned with my own but expressed far more eloquently then I ever could.

  • Jess,

I think your mission is to strike a delicate balance between commercial radio rant, Short Stack coverage and cat videos.

    Good luck!

Never mind about Kyle and Jackie O, what sort of mother does nothing with the information she obviously had before the “interview”. Furthermore what sort of mother agrees to let her 14 year old daughter take a lie detector test about sex? On national radio no less. I know who I would hold responsible. Keeping in mind, also, that Kyle and Jackie O are only presenters not the producers of the show. They were doing their job but who was to know how wrong it could go.
