Australian Idol Fires Kyle Sandilands

I was never expecting Austereo to step up to the plate and properly discipline Kyle Sandilands after last week’s radio debacle, but I suspected the folks behind family viewing favourite Australian Idol wouldn’t be overly pleased with the stunt. And whaddya know – they’ve fired him from the Australian Idol franchise.

From SMH:

The Ten Network is set to announce today that embattled host Kyle Sandilands has been stood down as a judge on Australian Idol. Senior executives from the Ten Network have spent the weekend deliberating whether they should act in response to mounting pressure from sponsors, viewers and listeners over the continuing fallout from last week’s lie-detector debacle.

According to sources, that decision was made earlier today. An announcement will be made by Ten later today.

Which is an exciting development… today.

Sources say Ten felt the scandal threatened to tarnish the goodwill generated by the success of the top-rating cooking series MasterChef.

Ten was also under pressure by the London production company Nineteen, which owns the Idol format worldwide.

Sources there say Idol creator Simon Fuller, appalled at the headlines following the lie-detector incident, felt it risked damaging Idol’s family-friendly brand worldwide.

Echoing that sentiment, a statement issued by Ten to the Herald last week confirmed that Sandilands’ position on Idol was under review.

“Idol is a family program,” the statement said. “We consider this a very serious incident and our executives will continue discussions over the weekend to come to a decision regarding his future on Idol.”

Finally, a decent punishment. Somewhere Mark Holden is rubbing his hands with glee.

All the vultures have smelled blood and are attacking! Poor Kyle and Jackie, anyone would have thought they raped the girl! Shame on all of you for perpetuating the nanny state we have become – all these experts surfacing to comment in order to justify their existence. K&J are providing entertainment and they have a huge following and reading in the aftermath a lot of enemies. Shame on Channel 10 for bowing to created hysteria over an incident that has blown out of all proportion.

Asking a 14 year old girl about her sex life? Entertainment at it’s finest.

Oh my God Constantina, you’re kidding, right? You obviously didn’t hear what was actually said or read the transcript. Maybe Kyle and Jackie o’s ‘huge following’ are as stupid as they are, because there’s no way on God’s Earth anyone could call it ‘created hysteria’ and retain any semblance of credibility, sensibility or respectability whatsoever.

Whether 10 have jumped on the bandwagon or not, Kyle at least deserves to be treated like a leper. The insensitivity and ineptitude he showed was just mind boggling. The girl’s opportunistic and disingenuous mother deserves worse. But I’m glad that you find the taunting and public humiliation of an underage rape victim ‘entertainment’ – no wonder you think he’s being treated unfairly. Come back and comment after putting your brain in gear first.

OMG Matt… did you watch A Current Affair? The whole thing was a lie. I am a grandmother and even I could tell the girl was lying, she showed no emotion, no trauma, I suspected and stated to my husband that the girl was lying. As for the question, it was the mother who wanted it asked, it was also the mother that wanted to win the holiday. She should be charged for exploiting, and Kyle and Jackie need to be reinstated and left alone. This is a lesson for us all!!

I guess that’s something that grandparents are good at. Working out if a girl on the radio who they have never heard before was lying about being raped. I suppose you just knew that Lindy killed her daughter as well.

Even if the girl was lying, it doesn’t make it OK for two adults to attach a lie-detector to a 14 year old girl, and broadcast the ‘quizzing’ of her by her mother about her sexlife – and treat it all as entertainment! How can such actions be defended?

  • Gordon

Kyle did absolutley revel at pushing the boundaries on common decency under the guise of ‘innocent fun’. Should have dumped him ages ago but better late than never. Watch for where he ends up surfacing which no doubt he will. GB

I’ll be dancing around the fire naked, making an offering of thanks to the gods for this. I mean take a look at the photo for the article here? I challenge anyone to look at it for longer than 30 seconds and not want to put your fist through your monitor. The guy is the epitome of ‘wanker’.

talk about a load of bull, It seems that all the people out there who are jealous of K & JO have now found their excuse to attack. they did nothing wrong, the girl was there with her parent, so there was parental concent. All u dull bored people out there, get a life and let K & JO live theirs. I want to hear them every morning just like b4, if u don’t like them, turn to another station, simple as that, and Aust Idol, u have lost a fan, talk about rubbish. He bought excitement to the show. Enough already, let these people have their life back, u go on their show on your own accord, no gun held to your head, what u choose to say is your problem, not theirs. Not everyone has to like everyone in the world, so move on already.

  • Tanya

They did nothing wrong, the mother is to blame. The book is being thrown at, these two people, why?
Maybe because they bring a lot of issues to the forefront, truths, that other gutless media sources never repost on.
Leave them alone and put them back on air!

  • Laura

From the very first time I heard the now infamous radio interview, I knew to my core the young girl was lying.
I am a grandmother and mother, and could hear no trauma or emotion in her voice. I remember saying to my husband, that girl is lying to cover the fact she had consensual sex. I was amazed and angry how quick EVERYONE including the Prime Minister, were to attack Klye and to a lesser degree Jackie, without investigating the truth. This is honestly one of the most shameful examples of public persecution.

Kyle is just sick he deserves to be taken of air and out of idol til he grows up and becomes mature jackios just as bad who will like it if it were their family members or their self in that poor girls position get a life kyle as i said when he grows up and wakes up to him self then again whens that?

  • jules

Jackie and Kyle are bullies. Have you ever spent any time listening to them? They are shallow, nasty people getting off on other peoples pain. I think what they did to the Cambodian refugee was by far the worst thing they have done.
But the damage they do to our youth with their obsession over ‘looks’ and ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ is harmfull too. Jackie couldn’t have had real empathy for the girl because, while she is this famous woman,(who knows, maybe a bit of pain might help her to grow in the future)she is riding too high on herself to truly understand anothers pain
