I’m not sure exactly what Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O were hoping to achieve by hooking a fourteen year old girl up to a lie detector machine and then asking her about sex and drugs on air. Gripping and powerful radio? Perhaps – if you were born without a brain and a soul. It was never going to end well. Turns out the fourteen year old girl had been raped.

2DayFM breakfast crew The Kyle and Jackie O show were left red-faced today after a lie-detector quiz about a 14-year-old’s drug and sex habits revealed that she was raped at age 12. The often controversial radio show admitted even they had crossed the line after the quiz, offering counseling services to the girl after she made the revelation.
Oh, well if they’ve offered counselling to the girl, that’s all right then!
The teenage girl’s mother – who, I might add, is clearly a moronic individual – knew her daughter had been raped two years ago, but still signed her up for the Lie Detector segment because she was worried about her bad behaviour. Gobsmackingly horrendous radio ensued.
The mother told Kyle and Jackie O she was aware her daughter had been smoking marijuana, and thought she “might have had sex before”.
At the commencement of the segment, a jovial Kyle and Jackie O began to quiz the girl, who was attached to a lie detection machine.
“I’m scared…it’s not fair,” the girl said to a question from Kyle about how she felt under scrutiny. Beginning with questions about her attendance at school, the girl vehemently denied she had skipped classes – but it was the question that followed that sent the station into meltdown.
“Have you had sex?” the mother asked.
“I’ve already told you the story of this,” the clearly uncomfortable child eventually responded. “And don’t smile about this because it’s not funny. I was raped when I was twelve years old!”
After a prolonged silence, Kyle interjected but hardly helped the situation.
“Right … And is that the only experience you have had?” he said.
You massive fuckhead, Sandilands.
The mother then mentioned she only became aware of the incident a few months ago, despite stating earlier she wasn’t completely sure if her daughter engaged in intercourse.
“And yet you still asked me the question,” the girl continued.
Jackie O then kindly stopped the segment and offered counselling services to the traumatised girl. It’s a pity they can’t offer her a new mother.
In a statement released this morning, 2Day FM General Manger Jenny Parkes said that the network was unaware of the gravity of the situation.
“Kyle and Jackie and 2Day FM were saddened by the turn of events this morning. In the normal course of preparing the segment all due care and consideration was given to the family and clearly we didn’t know anything about the incident.,” she said.
You prepared a segment where you attached an under-age girl to a lie detector machine in order to question her about sex live on air – I fail to see how due care and consideration was given to the her.
2Day FM should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. They produce radio for the half-witted and the heartless.

He should never EVER be seen on TV, let alone heard on radio, because then we actually have an image of him in our head. Ugh.

2Day FM should be massively fined, the mother should be charged & the show should be taken off the air as was Chaser. Seriously, putting a 14yr old on air and asking about her sex life, regardless of what may or may not have been previously known? Come on, who’s responsible for that brain fade?

Because if they don’t take action on this, then you can complain to ACMA and hopefully they’ll do something when 2day FM invariably fails to actually address this appropriately.
It is utterly absurd that they think they should be able to behave like this on air. Kyle’s comment in particular is just disgusting.
This was wrong on so many fronts I am almost at a loss where to start. Its a wonderful world we live in where you need a licence to catch a feckin’ fish but any arse clown can be a parent. If I had Fatboy, Bimbo and this mother in the same room, I would have a seriously hard time deciding who I would want to kick the fuck out of first. Their combined treatment of this girl is tantamount to child abuse and exploitation at the very least. What kind of parent knowingly puts her kid in a situation like this, just so she can boast to her friends in line at the local Centrelink that she was on TodayFM once?
The time has come where affirmative action needs to be taken against Sandilands. If his paymasters are happy to continue to ignore his peurility in the name of advertising revenue, then maybe someone should take one for the team and knock this bloke out.
I will utilise a good contact in Media Planning to find out which companies are sponsoring this show and come back with a list of products to avoid. Any corporation that knowingly ties their brand to anything these two touch, I will happily never buy or use again. If Austereo won’t listen to the public, then maybe when the revenue starts drying up they will accept that they eventually march to the beat of the public drum.
Jess, maybe a chance to evoke change for good through the power of new media here?

Predictably and justifiably the whole world is kicking the crap out of Kyle Sandilands on this one. However in a addition to his appalling lack of judgement we have to ask what type of management and producers would authorize the questioning of any female minor on matters of sexuality live on a commercial broadcaster. Also, many seem to being giving he mother a get out of jail free card. She asked her child about her sexual activity on air in the knowledge she had been raped!
It doesn’t matter weather the girl is truant or out of control, that is no way to address the problem. What any party had to gain out of such a segment is unfathomable.
I think action needs to be taken against every individual involved in bringing this show to air. From the broadcasting management, the rating hungry Kyle and Jackie O right down to the sponsors of this show. Shame on them all! I say hit them where it hurts – complain to Austereo and their advertisers and escalate it further! If Australia never saw or heard from that pair of vacuous twats again it would indeed me a beautiful thing.

Fuck the mother for playing dumb about her child’s sex life when she knows she’s been raped, blaming her for smoking marijuana when she hasn’t even bothered to get her counseling, and especially fuck her for dragging her onto a radio show to ask her about her sex life when the girl’s had to sum up enough courage and honesty to tell her about the assault. She obviously isn’t fit to raise a cactus plant, let alone keep the daughter she’s already let get raped.
Doesn’t forcing a child to discuss her sexual activity with the intent of distribution/broadcast amount to, oh, say, child pornography? WTF? I’ll try and use short words here to answer this one for you Shane. Perhaps because she’s a *child* and doesn’t wield the same power as the adults involved.
I am amazed at how much the other commenters are blaming these “shock jocks” when ALL the blame lies completely with this idiot mother who probably should have custody of her daughter taken away from her. When ANY woman gets raped, they are in desparate need of counciling but a 12-year old needs it all the more.
This “mother” should be in jail for neglect.
The blame can not go entirely one way or the other. That woman wouldn’t have the power to extract her fifteen minutes of fame from the exploitation and humiliation of her daughter if those people hadn’t heard what she wanted to do and given her the power to do it. It is their responsibility, as people in positions of power, to approve or disapprove of hooking up a fourteen-year-old girl to a lie detector and forcing her to talk about sex — and they did approve, all for the sake of “compelling radio”. They are about as low as the parent, almost lower in that they had the option to turn her away and they aggreed to help her exploit her child to further their own interests and popularity.
Oh but I agree that she should have some penalty for neglect – maybe not prison but at least she shouldn’t be allowed to keep her daughter.
I’m guessing the man who raped her was one of the mother’s boyfriends. It would account for
a) the fact that she sneaks out, it’s classic avoidance of the home environment
b) how young the girl was when she was raped — twelve is too young to be sneaking out and getting date raped, or to be in the city late at night
c) the level of resentment the mother apparently has for her daughter — no stable parent takes their child onto radio to discuss their sex life, and from the “don’t smile at me” comment it’s fairly obvious it was entirely an attempt to humiliate her, probably as an act of revenge. In addition, persisting with the interview after the rape revelation (”The question was have you had sex other than that”) was probably an attempt to discern whether the daughter had made any advances on the stepfather
d) the fact that the mother hadn’t gotten counseling for her daughter, because it would have meant implicating someone she cared in a rape case
e) the fact that the girl had just started a new school. Fourteen is too old to be starting high school, and for her not to have gotten into trouble with the faculty on suspicion of wagging when she’s had “plenty of sick days”, as she said, she would have had to have been there for a few months — I estimate that she started a new school shortly after she told her mother about the assault, and she was likely withdrawn from her original school to prevent the stepfather knowing where she was. Also, it’s the absolute least the mother could do to fix the situation — gain some distance and hope it went away by itself.
Even if I’m totally wrong on all the above counts, the fact that the mother hadn’t gotten her daughter counseling and attempted to violate her right to privacy on a radio show makes her unfit to be a mother.
I stopped listening to the show a few months back, when Kyle was arbitrarily giving away concert tickets or something, and said to the effect that he did not mind being called a racist or sexist or whatever, he would give away those tickets as he liked

Oh man, Kyle is such a dickhead. He just talks nonsense all the time. Whenever I have listened to his show (rarely) he just shows he has no sense, no brains and no idea. And this stunt was absolutely attrocious. Then Kyle and Jackie O’s response afterwards was so lacking in true remorse or apology. “There was shock”… like it’s a noun that was observed by all. What an idiot!
I just read that the Kyle and Jacki O show has been indefinitely and that Kyle’s management have stated he is “unable to perform his duties on-air at this time”. Good!
That radio station needs to realise that there are consequences for asking a 14 year old girl about her sexual experiences as part of a stunt, aimed to humiliate her. She is a child and should not be questioned about sex on air.
Everyone concerned at the radio station need to have a good hard look at their stunts and their duty of care to their participants to ensure something else doesnt blow up in their face like this stunt did.

It’s soooo easy to place blame in places that aren’t appropriate. I’ve worked in the welfare industry for numerous years and have heard many clients disclose their histories of sexual abuse. If you should be looking at anyone to blame for that disclosure on national radio, you should look at the mother. The daughter was quite clear that her mother already knew that information and yet she still asked the question.
You should be ashamed for making Kyle Sandalands the scapegoat. In all the media hype, not one conversation has been to look at the mother. She knew her daughter had been raped and yet she put her in a situation where of course that is the only thing that she could say. The only thing that Kyle and Jackio O did was listen to her admission of abuse. Frankly, I believe the mother added to the girls abuse by making her admit it on national radio. And if numerous rape centres are up in arms about Kyles comments, then they didn’t listen to the girls disclosure. I’ve been in the industry for over 15yrs, wake up, I’d be reporting that mother to the department of community services, rather than fire Kyle. He was trying to be kind in a horrible situation. But if you want a scapegoat, then go right ahead and fire someone who’s actually in a position to make the world better. And for one who works with homeless teens, then yes, he gives my clients hope.

Why should it be Kyle or Jackie O getting the blame? It’s the mother that brought the kid in and asked her.
Anyway if the kid said no then then could say she was telling the truth. If she said yes than they could say she was lying.
They brought in a 14 year old, so what? They didn’t know what she was going to say and only expected a yes or no.

Absolutely monstrous. If the mother already knew about the marijuana, why didn’t she just talk to her about the marijuana? The girl should have been in counseling for the rape, ANYWAY. While the hosts did cross the line and this NEVER should have happened, it’s the mother’s fault for putting her daughter through a humiliating and traumatic ordeal. Fourteen-year-old girls have sex sometimes. And if they’ve been raped they’re likely to act out. Don’t have kids if you won’t want to TALK to them (and more importantly LISTEN to them) when they’re teenagers and bad things happen.
