Tahnee Atkinson Is Australia’s Next Top Model
For someone who didn’t watch the whole series, I certainly found myself gripped by the Australia’s Next Top Model final last night! And didn’t it have it all? Montages, Mauboys, blood… Yeah, that’s right. I said blood.
With spectacularly bad timing, finalist Tahnee’s nose began bleeding shortly before the announcement of the winner. At first it just looked as though she was holding a tissue to her face because she was highly emotional after having her mother join her on stage, but after host Sarah Murdoch pointed out that Tahnee had a blood nose, I spent the next ten minutes watching the tissue turn from white to red completely enthralled.
The bleeding had stopped by the time the winner was announced, but a terribly sick part of me hoped that the excitement of winning ANTM would kick off another gush from the nose – I actually shouted at the telly “BLEED!” when the camera zoomed in to catch Tahnee’s reaction after becoming Australia’s Next Top Model. There’s clearly something very wrong with me.
Anyway, judge Charotte Dawson (a side note: HOW AWESOME IS CHARLOTTE, I SAY VERY) had said before the finale that she hoped Tahnee would win because of her “ample bosom and sexy bottom” so she must be very happy today. I found myself rooting for Tahnee too, by the end.
But apparently this is wrong! My Twitter feed indicates that Tahnee was the wrong choice because she isn’t “high fashion” or something. I don’t know. She’s a dirty spunk, isn’t that enough? Apparently not. I know nothing of modeling and fash, although I do know that sometimes the word “fashion” is shortened to “fash”, and surely that counts for something?
Here’s someone from brisbanetimes.com.au who seems to know stuff.
Is Tahnee Atkinson Australia’s next top model?
In an ideal world, yes. The girl is unquestionably gorgeous – she’s got an exceptional figure and a smile that stops traffic. She’s professional, well-behaved and determined. Her ‘normal’ beauty is something that a lot of women would love to see more of in fashion magazines.
But in the fickle and unfair world of modelling it probably won’t equal a long-term fashion career. As casting agents politely explained in the show, she just doesn’t have the matchstick-thin figure required by most top designers.
The competition’s runner-up, the ‘boganista’ Cassie Van Dungen, on the other hand, could very likely become our next Gemma Ward. Like Ward, her entire physicality – which can look awkward and gawky in real life – is built to parade beautiful clothing down a runway. Plus she’s got that whole Kate-Moss-crooked-teeth-funny-walk thing going on that designers and photographers adore.
So why didn’t Cassi win?
She was too much of a risky choice. A wall-punching, smoking, tantrum-throwing teenager with a 25-year-old boyfriend beating the healthy, glossy prom queen Tahnee might have been just too hard to sell.
And as judge Charlotte Dawson said, Cassie didn’t seem like she really wanted to win: “At the end of the day I think she would like to take the prize money and move back to Sunbury and marry her boyfriend.”
Charlotte certainly didn’t mince her words last night… which I kinda like.
Who do you think should have won, and why?

Tahnee definately deserved to win – she can still be (and will be) a success. Cassi was not ready, and was more focused on winning the prize money etc rather than the opportunity.
Loved the finale – made me smile and cringe at home on my couch – very Aussie, and a little painful, but fun nonetheless!
Just one question – why did they just gloss over the audience votes for Tahnee – no numbers, stats or anything..! It seemed kind of dubious. And in the end it isn’t a popularity contest, it’s a modelling competition, so maybe audience votes shouldn’t count??
Whatever happened in the end though, Tahnee, Clare and Cassi probably all have modelling careers ahead of them.
Not only is she not ‘high fashion’, she has no neck.
Okay, so I didn’t watch the show at all, but I’m happy Tahnee won because she wasn’t the one I was reading ’shock’ headlines about each week in the news.
so the nosebleed….
must show she’s a real model and been on the charlie already at the age of 17
hahahaha yeah just to get her into the party mood lol
Tahnee definitely has a lovely face, takes pretty pictures and was clearly an emotional favourite. But her measurements are simply too big. The top designers don’t make their runway garments in her size, and if you can fit the dress, well…plenty of other girls will. I don’t see her being a top international model any time soon. As Janice would say ’she’s an actress’ [not a model].
What ever happened to the other winners of top model.. apart from Alice of corse… ?????????? ps – Tahnee is gorgeous and deserved it.. and i luv claire …cassi is a fluke…
Yeah, she has a pretty smile (if you like that teenager oversized tooth look) and not doubt she is gorgeous, but in a very average way. Cassie is stunning in an edgy way, and will go far in the modelling business.
America’s Next Top Model has got it right, they rely on the votes from fashion industry experts rather than the popularity vote. With Australia’s version the whole thing is geared to making Fox lots of money.
Tahnee definitely deserved to win. She’s gorgeous and Cassi did not have the potential to win. She needs to grow up. On the other hand, Tahnee is already mature enough to handle the pressures of modelling. Go Tahnee!
CASSIE SUCKED, WAS UGLY AND WAS SO INCREDIBLEY FULL OF HERSELF I HATED EVERYTHING ABOUT HER. ‘o YER I WILL WIN EVEN THOUGH I DON’T EVEN TRY TO GIVE UP SOKING’. The only reason she made it to the final is cause of the ratings she recieved and DID U SEE HER WALK EEEEEEEEEEEWWWWW AND FLAT CHESTED AND UGLY.. DID I MENTION THAT I HATED HER!??
I wanted Tahnee to win because she’s just so adorable but truth be told, I think Cassie would have been the correct choice if she didn’t have such an attitude problem.
Cassie has that mannequin body and a kind of beauty that isn’t too distracting – unlike Tahnee whose beauty eclipses the beauty of the clothes, but its the clothes that models need to showcase.
I believe that Cassi, while she was a fiery contestant, was definitely the top model out of the two. Her figure is exactly what is needed in the fashion industry and she simply cannot take a bad shot. The girl is genetically blessed to be a model. Tahnee, although she is in no way a big girl, is too large for a professional modeling career, which was evident when no UK agencies were interested in her and she received the least booked shows for fashion week in the series. Too much has been placed on her ‘nice girl’ and ‘role model’ image which I also think is deceptive. I can recall an episode where she absolutely tore apart all the other models in the show in a “bitch session” with Lola and Franky during the series. She’s cute but even her facial features are a little out of proportion, and not in a good way (eyes too small and cheek bones too large). I wish her all the best but based on modeling potential, Cassi deserved to win.
