Short Stack’s Appearance On Rove

I was watching the end of Rove on Sunday night and managed to catch the performance of rock wunderkinds Short Stack. As I am a 28 year old woman, I was totally unfamiliar with their work, but I am told by reliable sources that the band is hugely popular with teenage girls.

Obviously teenage girls in this country have developed a taste for high energy pop-rock performed by boys with ridiculous hair, but since I chose Donny from New Kids On The Block as my number one hearthrob back when I was knee high to a grasshopper, I’m probably not in much of a position to judge.

Here is the band playing a song, the lyrics of which were nearly indecipherable as far as my ancient ears are concerned. It sounds to me as though important vowels and consonants are suspiciously missing from much of what the lead singer is belting out, but as my wondrous pal Fluffy quipped “They probably wrote the song via SMS” so fair enough.

They look like pretty young girls who borrowed wigs from the set of Designing Women. As far as the tune itself goes, my favourite bit is 3.12 – “KeeyoobaahfrensowweekenbetogethaUH!”. POWERFUL! Although why the Daily Telegraph/Herald Sun haven’t mustered up a story about Sway Sway Baby’s violent lyrics and the horrific potential the track has to inspire murder amongst tweens is beyond me.

But ignore my issues and buy their “Indie / Rock / Thrash” album (hilariously titled “Stack Is The New Black”) if you want to! I am clearly a pensioner with no taste.

PS: The comment from a girl called Mad Hatter on their MySpace page made me laugh out loud – “I think I am the only teenage girl in Australia who hates you.” HAHAHAHA FEEDBACK WIN!

  • sup jess!
just wanted to let you know that the lead singer, shaun, actually had a throat infection that night. He hadn’t spoken for 12 hours before the show :)

    jess
    xxoo

    • Lauren Murray

Yeah, he actually had a throat infection, but still got up there and sang, plus doing heaps of rural instores, just cause its not your type of music, doesnt mean you have to bash it.
      why pick at them?
there having fun, making music plenty of people like, and even tho you dont find them hot, that really would be cause your ancient.
i dont think you would be doing what they can do :)

      • Aleesha

also, the fact they had just done a gig an hour or two before probably didn’t help.
i would like to say they were about 10times better at that show than on rove.
but all day they were getting rushed around.
        Soundcheck at the hifi.
        soundcheck at rove.
back to the hifi for their show.
        straight back to rove.
        interviews.
        getting mobbed by fans.
        etc.etc.

i admit, they were not their best on rove. and one could argue that being worn out is all apart of the “rockstar life”
but also, as people have said, shaun did have a throat infection.

you can see how tired they are in this clip.
and like i said, i went to the show at the hifi just before this, and they were so much better!

everyone has the right to an oppinion, so i’m not trying to say you’re wrong for not liking them.
but you can’t criticize an entire band on one bad performance.

    • TheFringe

wow tweenies its called an opinion get over it everyone is entitled to there own opinion and just becouse you teens havnt got your own opinion yet doesnt mean to can make lamecores and death threats at someone who has one and to clear it up i am 15 and like shortstack i have liked shortstach and suported them sinces they started unlike all of you. but seriously its an opinion get over it!

  • Rob

I agree with you Jess, they were terrible. They had the sort of rock sound that continues to be popular, but they didn’t really deliver it well; eg. your comment on the lyrics being totally indecipherable. Also I don’t think the fact that you’re 28 disqualifies you from judging them. I think it actually adds more credibility due to a greater experience. That said, if teenage girls like it, good luck to them, but I can’t see any longevity. Shortstack when compared to Silverchair at that age start to look very inadequate.

  • Fiona

My daughter loves this band (she is 16). I think what they lack in vowels, they make up in hair spray.

  • Bree

    um, the band was sick
    the lead singer had a
    throat infection, and they actually
are pretty good, im sure they are
    waaaaaaaaay better than you.

  • lauren

omfg too all the commets above!
you people don’t even know them personally. . .
shaun did have a throat infection and they also had another concert only hours before this performace so the did their best like they always have. you guys are so just outta touch

  • katielofl

Shaun Diviney [lead singer] has had an on-going throat infection for weeks leading upto the tour. he was even hospitalized. they are normally amazing live, and really great performers.
maybe you should check the band out and whats going on before you start saying shit =]

  • Marto

…and such powerful lyrics (for the few words that are in English). Dylan, Taupin, Lennon & McCartney cannot hold a candle to these modern day poets, and they are sooooo rugged and male too.

Seriously, what kind of parent lets your son walk out in public looking like a big girly man who stuck a knife in the toaster? Teenage girls have always been the barometer for bad taste and irrelevance, and nothing has changed here now. Its a shame that we now seem to be producing young men who shake hands with the strength of a wet lettuce leaf, dress like women and could do with a decent steak.

    • leeanne diviney

      hey marto,
i am the parent of the lead singer of short stack. i can tell you i am very very very proud of my son and of what the and the other boys have achieved so far. they may not be to your liking but they appeal to many others. more to the fact they are fabulous young people, doing something constructive….now marto what have YOUR children achieved ?????????

      • emma

        ah you’re great lee :)

      • Marto

Don’t have kids, and if you are proud that your son is a walking stereotype then yay for you. Cop the fact that whilst they may have fans (and wonderful, eloquent ones that have joined us to wax lyrical on this blog), there is a flipside to that coin. Maybe both you and your son could both take a big glass of Harden Up juice. They will soon go the way of many other soul-less bands of their ilk and disappear off the radar, once they run out of words to rhyme with ‘moon’ and ‘June’.

    • LOL go leeane.
short stack are the best and if they suck so much and are gunna fail why would they have so mnay fans? they have great music and unlike alot of bands they include there fans in alot of things , they are awsome stop putting them down, and if you havnt noticed they dress like most teens of this generation

    • leeanne diviney

marto, you and everyone else have a perfect right to like or dislike whoever you choose and i have never disdputed that. i dont need to hardenup. YOU asked what type of parent etc. so I informed you, i am the proud type. i personally wouldnt care what career my children chose as i know we have raised intelligent, educated, independent people. enjoy your life marto as we enjoy ours

      • Kitty Hannah and Karliee

        HEY MUM!
we were like just reading the comments & then we saw your name & we’re like arghh!
        x

    • Kayla

Omg, can all you haters stop bagging them?

When did the whole “Who would let their kids go in public dressed like that” thing come into it?

Thats their image; people LOVE it. Get the fccuk over it! You guys obviously know nothing about teenagers these days, coz thats what we all look like. It’s called fashion. They have so many fans and they havent even released an album yet. Thats what I call inspiring. So get the fuck out if you don’t like them; they are an amazing band doing what they love.

  • hannah:)

Although why the Daily Telegraph/Herald Sun haven’t mustered up a story about Sway Sway Baby’s violent lyrics and the horrific potential the track has to inspire murder amongst tweens is beyond me.

I just find that really really funny:)

  • alyssa.

ok i just want to say what the fuck?
what type of bitch would write this because the lead singer has a throat infection and had to go to hospital and they just did a gig if you are deaf so they are worn out.
i would honestly like to see you do better you talentless bitch.
their music is fucking awesome and how do they look like women???? it’s a mystery to me….

  • Dee

i would have to disagree…but then again being a teenager and short stack being my favourite band i have to stick up for them…the lead singer shaun had larengitis…

  • GeorgiaRose

awww come on man give em a break… and by the way 3:12 is “KillYourBoyfriendSoWeCanBeTogether”
and you think that i think these pretty boys would date me if i killed my boyfriend (if i had one) or that they would date me at all…

i mean i listen to Micheal Jackson and all i want to do it overdose on sleeping pills and starve myself till my hair falls out..

seriously.. its music… complain all you like girls (like me) are still gonna listen to them. and you know a majority of them only listen to them cause there “hot”

    Georgia

  • Sarah

LOL i agree short stack are not very good at all, if anything they may be the worst band to EVER come out of australia.
also the lead singers pants are just to tight and he has fat legs.

  • Mikala

Jess is right. shaun had a throat infection and hadn’t been 2 practise b4 they left for there tour and had a show b4 they were on rove!
i luv short stack and they r really funny and hav amazing talent!!
yes they were make-up but only in there video clips and at concerts.
    ily short stack 4ever :)

  • Alley

No offence but Short Stack are awesome and I think your just jelous that they are sucessful ;) Dont be a hater at least Australia is gaining in the music! Short Stack is gonna be the next big thing!

  • Alley

Oh and 3:12 says “Kill your boyfriend we could be together Oh!”….doesnt take a genius to figure that one out love ;)

  • umm yer ok . just because there better than u . so get a life and find a band you like and dont bag out others.

  • Emily

OMG thankyou sooo much.. i’v been looking for this video everywhere! you made my day. oh and by the way, if you hate them so much, y all the time and effort to write a shitty article about them?

  • Lauren

the Short Stack boys may not be the greatest band in the world, yet…all good things take time and these boys are only just starting to hit the mark…i think that they have great personality and style as well as loads of talent and potential and obviously half the teenage population does too…we should definately keep an eye on these boys in years to come.

  • Haha.
    Shaun – That is funny.

    =P

  • Bell

i was there at rove, aswell as the concert earlier.
the show in the city was amzing but i agree the performance on rove wasnt as good.
shaun had been soooooo sick though. after doing a two hour concert infront of hundreds of screaming girls when he had a really bad throat infection. you can hardly blame him for being kinda sick.
if you think short stack suck and just look like girls, like a lot of people i know,(including girls aged 15) thats fine but dont go around ruining it for us who really do like them.
they were amazing live. and even came and spent time with us all backstage at rove. they were really nice and just beacuse there hair is kinda long is no reason to judge them.

  • sore throat…that explains it.

the tween backlash has begun. you might want to delete this post if you value your life.

  • Kristie

It is so easy to turn into a hater at the age of 28 these days, it’s quite sad really.

But lets think of all this hatred in terms of Australian music in general shall we. Now think, why have very little Aussies made in big in the music industry internationally? Why don’t we as Aussies respect our local music as much we do International acts?

This is due to the fact that any time someone pops their head out, dares to be different, and gets noticed, there is always a following of haters. How about we give our local musicians a pat on the back instead? After all, just because, Jess – this 28 year old woman who use to have a crush on Donny from New Kids On The Block, cannot understand the genius behind Short Stack, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Melodic guitar, shredding bass, a drummer with experience; teamed with catchy lyrics and killer style. es, Stack are the New Black in Australia music and they have worked hard for it.
So, Jess, how are New Kids On The Block going for you?

  • your abit harsh. some of us, such as me, love this band. im sure there were “rubbish bands” when you where around, stop judging other peoples likes please.

    and shaun was sick. blaaaaaaaah!

  • Dennise

I am 17 and love the band Short Stack. I have seen them live numerous times and have absolutely loved it each time. However i have noticed, mainly because of Short Stack TV (found on YouTube), that the recordings of them doing a live show really suck in comparison to them actually being live. But that is just my opinion.
I would also like to point out that you can’t really learn enough about the band and their music from only listening to one song. It is like judging a book by its cover. Okay so you didn’t like that one song, doesn’t mean that everything they do is bad.

  • hey i dont care if you dont like them, but you’ve obviously taken alot of time bagging them so i dont know how hat makes you win…
firstly you say you cant understand the lyrics,
then you say they shouldn’t be singing about murder.. make up your mind, you either can’t hear the lyrics r just don’t like them.

    get a life
    xx :D
