And If The Open Letter Wasn’t Enough…
Darling readers, I swallowed my pride and spoke to the lads at Nova in Perth about everything that happened yesterday (ie. the avalanche of teen fury) regarding Short Stack and made yet another public apology to fans of the band.
You see, I hadn’t fully comprehended how traumatic it would be for anyone to read a differing opinion on the internet (of all places!) when I originally wrote my scathing and bitter review of Short Stack’s performance on Rove, and as my Open Letter/Twitter apologies didn’t seem to cut the mustard with the hard-hearted harpies who adore the wondrously coiffed musical ensemble, I took Matty & Dan from Nova 937 up on their offer to say sorry on air to the young people of Perth.
If you’d like to listen, click here. Incidentally, it was a pre-record and these things occasionally get edited afterwards, so rest assured that I was saying “I know” about something that had been said and later cut, even though it sounds in the clip as though I’m saying “I know” to no one in particular for no reason whatsoever.
I hope we’ve all learned something from yesterday’s experience. I have never had so many Twitter replies in my life. There were over a hundred – and that was before the angry Short Stack fans began hurling abuse at me. I should just copy and paste the entire thing, it is an absolute pisser.
Now let’s move on, shall we? There are far more important things for us to attend to. As I said last night on that goddamn soul-sucking social media site, if I want to feel superior to children then I’ll do what I normally do – spend the afternoon watching It’s Academic and heckle the contestants.

Jess Mcguire? GET A LIFE! instead of wrecking someone elses
Oh dear Jess i think people are sill upset with you, you apologised so nicely too
…but apologising to idiots is like performing CPR on a corpse.
wow. i tried to so hard to find the clip from anchorman i wanted to properly express how i feel about all this, but this was the best i could find:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8RyykM7Xx4&feature=related
…and at 1.30 it sums up the last 24-48 hours nicely, i think.
The battle has been epic, and who are *we* to fight against the crazed fandom of teenage girls (you could not pay me enough to relive my teenage years, not even in a crazy Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis kind of way), but geez it was fun.
Jess FTW. You stay classy, San Diego!
Oh wow you must be powerful if you can ruin someone’s life just by making a criticism of their appearance on Rove. The poor little dears… be gentle next time!
Ahh…such an outpouring of angst ridden comments, love it!! Still if the internet had have been round back in the day, and if a comment had been made about either the hair or fashion of the magnificiant Goss brothers of Bros fame, I guarantee I’d have been commenting up a storm!
umm…. who are the Goss brothers of Bros fame?
BTW hate informercials, just to let everyone know, lol
Isn’t Short Stack the small asian child from Indiana Jones? Jess McGuire, to outrage so many emo tweens, I take my hat off to you. God only knows why they can’t get out of their sister’s skinny jeans and get into some decent music, ala Alphabeat or Ladyhawke.
Thanks for stereotyping us all as “emo tweens”. Just so you know, we’re not. We’re ordinary teenagers who don’t appreciate people mocking one of the best bands around, and we’re willing to fight for what WE believe in.
HAHAHA “one of the best bands around”? not quite dear.
ok there are four things wrong with this statement.
1: we are not all emo, and if so, whats wrong with emo’s?
2: ladyhawke sucks shit
3: short stack are decent music
4:ladyhawke sucks shit
My gosh, so glad they didn’t rip off Duran Duran’s look of the early 80’s…Nick Rhodes was obviously ahead of his time…
Because of this whole debacle, would you consider changing the site name, “Defamer,” to something less ambiguous for the little kiddies?
Buahaha, I love you.
Buahaha indeed!… only found this via lifehacker, never read defamer much, much less heard of short stack (must be the impact of excessive listening to community radio on my wizened brain).
awesome work jess :D
I definitely think you should put the whole tweet war up. Entertainment is never wrong. :-)
You should not aplogise. You are the bomb. ShortFlack and their monitor watching coifs reminded me of that Kath and Kim ep on Deal or No Deal.Word.
If fans of Short Stack cannot deal with criticism of their beloved pre-pubescent heroes, then they should not be reading a site like this or any medium of communication for that matter.
There are always going to be lovers and haters of almost everything in this world and if they do not accept this and move on then they clearly do not have the maturity to be on the internet without a Net Nanny.
I don’t care, your entitled to your opinions, i just disagree with your shitty opinions. People will always hate bands, and love them. However your hate is misplaced this time.
Really? How does this even warrant an argument. If you cant handle a small amount of criticism over some shitty band you’re into i think the internet isn’t for you. Go read a book, your parents will thank me.
I have to agree, I think you’re evil too, Jess. I bet you piss on kittens, light puppies on fire and punch pregnant unicorns while forcing everyone to stare at your ancient, decaying granny fanny.
You can never apologise enough for insulting Short Stack. In fact, you should set up a foundation for those left tramatised by your scathing attack.
What rock have I been living under?
So who are these Short Stack fellows anyway that the kiddies have their knickers in a twist over?
Are they the lovely gents in the coloured skivvies who sing with a dinosaur about big, red cars? If so, shame on you Jess McGuire, shame: that Jeff fellow is rather dishy.
I had the misfortune of hearing Short Stack play an opening act. You’d be hard pressed to find a band to play as badly as they do live.
The highlight was a member of the band tripping on a cable, unfortunately he didn’t fall on his face :(
i still hate you jess seriously GET A FUCKING LIFE and i hope you learnt your lession not to mess with the short stack fans cause we do come out in full force.
..ahh, sorry love, but nobody is scared of little kiddies unless they are the stars of ‘Children of the Corn.’ Get back to the sandpit.
I am in the “old” category. But then, I busted my face in the Pantera moshpit, got punched in the back of the head by a biker at Slayer, and stagedived at Sepultura. If, I was thrust at age 15 in 1994 to 2009 and told that Short Stack was the band I was supposed to love, i’d call it the pissiest brand of hair-boy wuss rock i’d ever heard and promptly commit hara-kiri over the shame and indignity I would bring to my family for being a fan. I weep for the future.
To be completely honest, yes I am a Short Stack fan, but I don’t understand why, as far as I can see, I’m the only person who wasn’t bothered by this. Not everyone likes the same music, so to all the over sesitive bimbo fans, just get over it. And Jess, I don’t think it was neccascery of you to apologize, you shouldn’t have to regret saying something you truly meant.
=D
=P
It’s a bit surprising that one of my comments has showed up, but the other that I made shortly afterwards is still missing.
I hope it wasn’t too “traumatic” for you Jess. :D
Perhaps you don’t like my “Free Short Stack Personalised Stickers”, or perhaps you just don’t want to queue up with the fans.
There’s nothing to be scared of Jess. They won’t bite, and the offer still stands.
I just wish that the comments system here was as open as your letter.
I’d be happy to friend you on my Facebook if you’d like Jess, and I won’t censor your comments.
