@daveyjonesisdead: Yup, that's our culture's verdict. Nice, ain't it?
@Furious George: Who doesn't want to take a ride on a disco stick?
Give the lady some credit here. That's poetry.
@badasscat: well she still looks great i just always remembered her being a lot more athletic looking.
milominderbinder
@Furious George: Oh, go listen to your Kings of Leon and weep silently in your room.
@bboston88 (star please?): it's not that she didn't win "a big one," it's that she didn't win one singles tournament in her professional tennis career, ever. for someone known as a "tennis star" this is a joke.

@ae38:
Actually, I have a pretty good understanding of what it takes to be a pro athlete.
I also understand that you're missing the point of my comment.
There was a period during her career (relatively early on in her career, yet far enough into it that it was reasonable to make a guess about how she would turn out in her 20's) that suggested she could've won a Grand Slam, which is the criteria that many in the tennis world equate with being "really good." And, make no mistake; there was a time when that was the goal she established for herself.
The appropriateness of her leaving tennis is a related, yet different, conversation. But, when you're talking about athletes as athletes (and artists as artists?) it's appropriate to judge them by the goals they've established, even if those goals change later on.
Also, please note that while I did say/imply she failed to reach her athletic goals, I never called her a failure.

@milominderbinder: I think she looks great.
@bboston88 (star please?): In 2000, she ranked #8. In 2001, she ranked #74. She didn't even win 50% of her career matches. Whether you attribute her rise and then quick fall to outside interests or a fluke in 1999-2000, her overall record shows her true strength was in doubles with Martina Hingis.

@mina324: ...or "slept their way to a degree."
@Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate: Let's if I have this straight now:
Girlfriend bashing: bad.
Child molesting: OK.

@mina324: At least he went to class. No one at my school bothered going. Except me, guess I was a sucker.
@ae38: Agreed. She was on the pro tour, pretty highly ranked. She's a failure because she wasn't number one or didn't win a big one? Newsflash, most don't. Most don't make it that far. To say that she "could have been really good" is idiotic. She was a great player.
Never throw your drink at Anna Kournikova - or she will cut you.
In James Franco's defense, I think a lot of college grads have fallen asleep in class at least once.

SJP hasn't ripped off Broderick's head and sucked out his bodily fluids yet? Just how long does this mating ritual last?
@theartdodger: When people say things like this, its very obvious that they have have very limited understanding of what it takes to be a pro athlete, especially with the USTA. Many of these young tennis stars begin playing at a very young age, are pushed and pushed by parents and their ever growing camp, and some just crack under the pressure. I don't think there's anything wrong with bowing out before it all starts to get to you.

@Limitedappeal: If you'll indulge me here, I think Lady GaGa provides a valuable service to the world at large. That is to say, she's a very potent reverse-IQ test. You can very easily and reliably ascertain the depth of someone's stupidity by figuring out whether or not they listen to, much less claim to enjoy, the work of Lady GaGa. I can't tell you how many second dates the GaGa Test has gotten me out of. And yes, we're pretending that it was my choice here.
Furious George
@Astroblack: Seriously. I'm not even being snarky here when I say that I'd take Anna's life over nameless-Russian-girls-who-are-currently... ANY day.
@Limitedappeal: What amuses me the most about her is that she's trying to pass herself off as 23 years old.
jobsworth
I wouldn't throw my drink at her for invading my space.
Just saying.
That pic of Mariah as Eminem...frightening! Yet strangely enough, she looks like the type of pseudo-thug I usually attract. Yeah, I'd hit that.
bigazzkid
@Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate: Especially when they're not sorry.
Page Six describes Kournikova as a "tennis ace".

@theartdodger: Bah. Who cares about actually being good at anything when people will pay you to stand around and look pretty.
Astroblack
I hope the Brown-JayZ thing is true. You should not just instantly forgive people for all wrongs.
Good call Jay-Z. Chris Brown should lay low for a while, say a century or so.
Martiniman
Anna Kournikova could've been really good.
There was a time before she got caught up in all of the sex symbol stuff that I thought she was going to at the top of the game.
theartdodger
what?! she was so pretty! why did she have to go and get all skeletal. i mean duhh she's still gorgeous but geez.
milominderbinder
Lady GaGa tries exceptionally hard to make herself one of the most dislikeable people on the entire planet and succeeds time after time.
