Bill Murray Gave ‘McG’ The Headbutt To The Face You’ve Been Longing To Give Him

Maybe you’ve heard of Joseph McGinty Nichol, popularly known as “McG,” director of such films as Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and the upcoming Terminator Salvation. Perhaps you’d like him to get beat up, if only because he calls himself McG? If so, don’t fret—-Bill Murray already did it.

McG, doing press junkets to promote this Friday’s release of Terminator Salvation, was talking about Christian Bale’s much publicised freakout during filming and how movie sets can be stressful environments filled with monster egos, when he casually mentioned this little story to a reporter from The Guardian:

McG declines to comment any further than he already has, but points out that movie sound stages can be stressful places where creative battles sometimes become heated. Particularly, it seems, on his sound-stages. “I’m reintroducing the fist-fight to movie sets,” he smiles. “I don’t think there’s been a film I’ve made where there hasn’t been some kind of physical fight. I mean, I’ve been headbutted by an A-list star. Square in the head. An inch later and my nose would have been obliterated.” Will he be revealing any names? “Nah, I probably shouldn’t,” he smiles. “But it was Bill Murray. Y’know, it’s a passionate industry.”

Bill Murray?!?! Bill Murray is a lot of things, but he might be the absolute last guy we’d ever expect to throw a headbutt on a director during filming. Do we see him sipping cognac and playfully flirting with younger women in hotel bars, accosting people in the middle of the night in parks, and maybe wandering into a hipster party in Brooklyn and getting stoned with the kids every now and again? Yes, totally! But do we see him as someone who headbutts people at work? No, absolutely not, which all points to one thing—-McG is probably as massive a tool as his name suggests.

@Midwesterner in NYC: Yeah, the surprise over the fact that Murray got physical is baffling to me. This is completely within character. And count me in with those who still love him anyway.

Who else could have done Groundhog Day or Lost in Translation at the time? The man may be a reluctant artist, but he is an artist.

Has anyone read "Tom Shales' Live From New York? The guy decked Chevy Chase backstage. Again, perhaps something that should be applauded, but at the same time, this news should not be too surprising.

  • TryThisAtHome

First of all, It's O'Hare not O'Hara airport....
Secondly, regarding the annoying name of McG:
From Wikipedia (and I think I read this in the LA Times):
Regarding his name, McG has stated that:

It's fun to hate a guy called McG. In my humble opinion it's sheer fucking lunacy because it's just short for McGinty - fucking get past it. My name is Joseph McGinty Nichol. My mother's maiden name is McGinty. My uncle is Joe, my grandfather was Joe. I was called McG since the day I was born because we were broke and there were three Joes in the house. There's no Hollywood, 'I think I'll give myself a nickname' bullshit. It just is. And at some point I would be a sell-out punk if I rolled over and said, 'Well, call me Joe.' [...] I can only sigh and move forward.

always have and always will love bill. but have heard from friends who've both worked and played with him that he's...let's say 'eccentric'. not an asshole, not a douchebag, just a little odd, very unpredictable, easily bored and surely doesn't suffer fools. so head-butting the likes of mcg would seem to be par for the course. cause i bet (he even sounds like he's admitting it here) mcgeewhiz kinda deserved it.

  • the_illmatic

He should headbutt that twit again for good measure after the crap film that was Terminator: Salvation.

Bill Murray is our Jean Reno. How about remake of The Professional?

(Don't thank me. Thank The Recasting Couch. OK, that's me.)

  • ElSwell

Two tears ago BM showed up at my local for drinks with a few former college buddies (BM dropped out of Regis after getting caught trying to fly out of O'Hara with weed). He was very gracious & cool to everybody, I tried to *discretely* buy a round for his table, he wound up buying me a drink instead.

@chip: I know that, but I don't care, because I see Bill sipping cognac, dangit!

@chip: That's my bad. I read that it was opening this week, but that's in the UK. I hardly noticed it's US opening (obviously).

My only Bill Murray story told to me many, many years ago by a FOAF:

BM was dining at FOAF's friend's home. BM said he needed to use the bathroom and asked where it was. BM was given directions to the bathroom, got up and walked into a closet and closed the door behind him. BM emerged a minute later, zipping up his pants and saying how much better he felt.

@wilma23: I've heard good and bad things about him. I think he can be a bit grumpy at times, but for the most part, I think he's supposed one of the good guys. As this story proves.

@wilma23: I once saw him snap at a kid for asking for an autograph. Granted it was at his son's basketball game, and he was trying to watch, but it was middle school basketball and it was only one kid, not a whole crowd.

And yet, I still love him.

@chip: I don't the opening weekend was quite as boomtacular as hoped for, and weekend #2 was it's own special form of headbutt.

So now, they're just trying to pretend none of that ever happened, and are reopening it this weekend!

    Marketing genius, right?

  • Go Like Hell Machine

@wilma23: Really? I thought he actually had a pretty good reputation. I've heard that he can be a bit of a recluse in Hollywood-type situations, but never an asshole.

  • MoeGolden

For what its worth, Bill Murray stories have become a meme of their own - and that 2003 gawker story seems to be the source.

I thought Bill Murray had a long-standing reputation for being a colossal asshole. Not that it matters much, because you would be hard-pressed to convince me that McG didn't deserve to have his ass handed to him.

  • spincast

@Midwesterner in NYC: I saw in an interview/behind the scenes on Caddyshack that Bill Murray and Chevy Chase REALLY didn't get along. The scene with the two of them talking in Murray's character's shack was filled with a lot of real-life animosity.

  • bmoreDLJ

Joe McGinty Nichol makes incredibly unwatchable films, so I'm not surprised if some of the dramatic talent he cons into appearing in his catastrophes want to do him physical harm. He's an eyesore.

@TryThisAtHome: McG: I WON'T fucking get past it, heavenly-white-fade-to-your-dumbass-nick... TOOL!

You're an idiot, and your FAMILY's an idiot. If there's three Joes, you have Joe, Joey, and Joseph.

Hell, I was one of three Davids, and we were all called fucking David. Any confusion would be cleared up in, oh, about FOUR FUCKING SECONDS.

@dandles: I seriously don't think Bill Murray would survive Lucy Liu's honest wrath.

  • KatieMick

@The Cajun Boy: Someone above mentioned it in a FOAF story...."fly out of O'Hara w/ weed." yada yada.

I loves the Bill Murray - I'd love to play a round of golf with him. And I hate golf.

  • Edward Lionheart

@DorothyBarker: Yes. VERY moody is how I'd put it. All stars are impossible, though, and he's one of the more interesting (in a good way).

  • dandles

Wasn't there stories about how he fought with Lucy Liu? Like, physically? Hard to fault Bill for headbutting McG, though.

  • rahelio

@GoneElsewhere: i'm glad someone brought it up. Any work environment can be a volatile place, especially movie sets where people are encouraged to show emotion but this incident is not at all surprising given his history.

@wilma23: I have had 2 experiences with him and he was wonderful both times. Funny, down to earth, respectful. He's odd, but who isn't really. Everyone has an off day I guess.
