Samson And Delilah Wins Camera d’Or!
I am always thoroughly chuffed to begin a week here at Defamer Australia with a fantastic Aussies Done Good™ story, and it doesn’t get much better than Samson and Delilah’s victory at the Cannes Film Festival.
I’ve heard amazing things about Samson and Delilah. I’d been hoping to get my booty to the cinema this week to check it out for myself based on the reviews of friends, and now there’s even more incentive to view the film on the big screen – it’s just been awarded the Camera d’Or at Cannes.
Aboriginal director Warwick Thornton’s Samson and Delilah, a tale of young love in a troubled indigenous community, was on Sunday awarded the Camera d’Or first film prize at the Cannes festival
French actress Isabelle Adjani awarded the Camera d’Or of the 62nd Cannes film festival to what the jury described as “the best love film we’ve seen for many a year, Samson and Delilah.”
Warwick Thornton accepted the honour with a nice dash of Francais.
“Thank you for believing in our first born baby,” Thornton said as he accepted the award. “I don’t know what to say. Viva Cannes, viva le cinema.”

I saw it, and loved it. Made me hate myself, as a white middle class rapist of indigenous land, and I know others who had similar reactions. Brilliant film, white people suck. Not necessarily the intended message, but there you go. Also, wow do we talk a lot? Took me more than half the film to realise Samson doesn’t speak – such brilliant silent acting I didn’t even notice. Viva indeed.
Truly an amazing movie. I saw it nearly two months ago and I’m still thinking about it relentlessly.
Great result for the film. A worthy winner. Not so sure about the “francais”. It should be Vive Cannes, Vive le Cinema!” “Viva” is Spanish, not French.
Trust an Abo to steal a story title and turn it into hate whites. There must have been a lot of free grog flowing and the judges must have been pissed. At the very least naive, uneducated and total idiots. They are silent because their brains are in meltdown from sniffing petrol and they could never speak in the first place.
