@FrancisElla: ...You do know that most classic movie musicals had some serious dubbing? In the film version of 'West Side Story', both Tony and Maria are dubbed. And in the movie version of 'Guys and Dolls', they destroy some of my favorite songs because Marlon Brando didn't have the singing voice to play Sky Masterson. Just listen to the Brando version if 'Luck be a Lady' against any of the Broadway versions! He practically speaks the song because he can't sing it.

Lately, it seems that movie musicals are popping out with actors who we didn't know could sing, but actually have serious musical theater experience- not surprising since so many actors start in high school musical theater!

Are there any actual Italians in this movie?

It kinda weirded me out to see DDL in a musical, frankly. Most musicals are all about fantasy and froth, and I associate him with acting that is darker and more-real-than-reality. I mean, I lurve DDL (yeah, he's on my 5-freebies list), but he seemed . . . out of place somehow. Or maybe it's just the tone of this particular musical? I haven't seen it, but the trailer is very Chicago-esque (same director, natch). Not the kind of film I associate with DDL.

BUT! Seeing a trailer for a new DDL movie made me look up my favorite moment from My Beautiful Laundrette on youtube, and lo and behold: it's someone else's favorite too:

@undefined: 9 is sort of based on 8 and 1/2 by Fellini. It doesn't have to much to do with 8 Women, except that there is awesome singing and dancing and some over-the-top Euro ideas of ladyhood. But all are really fun and this movie should be too, except that I despise two out of the ladies.

@mharker: Oh yes I know about Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah. I'm willing to give people the benefit of the doubt but when the entire cast is people that I have to give the benefit of the doubt it makes me less excited to see the movie. I guess I just wish they would not rely so much on just casting big names instead of the most talented person for the role. In the old movie musicals that I love they seemed to cast more "musical actors" not "actors who can sing." Maybe that is why I have a preference for that type of casting.

@FrancisElla: A lot of times famouse actors really do have professional experience but that isn't well known. And it's always a great surprise to see someone like Catherine Zeta-Jones or Queen Latifah belt out a song when you weren't expecting it. I wouldn't write off Kate Hudson right away because she may have an awesome voice or be a great dancer but no one really knows yet.

I do agree with you that in the case of Sweeney Todd, I wish Johnny Depp hadn't been cast. But that was part of the excitement around the movie--can he sing?!

No, the musical is about an Italian ... director, I think? Anyway, it's basically his story and struggles with his career and his three ladies (girlfriend, leading lady and, uh, the other one. I forget how she came in.)

I may be the only one, but it bothers me when people make movie musicals with famous people in them. I want to see broadway caliber singers and dancers not kate hudson. Perhaps the general public would not go see a movie without the famous names but I certainly would. Obviously these people are still talented but it seems that they are often compromising the quality of the performances by including famous people who do not professionally sing and dance. Also I'm biased because I really want to see my broadway heroes on the big screen since I don't have the money to see them on stage.

@chinaplate: no... I never ever cross my heart fall asleep watching films, so I took it as a sign that maybe this wasn't for me. My friend sitting next to me said that it was AWESOME, she has dubious taste in films, so I never gave it a second chance.

This looks like the campiest camp ever to camp. Which means I'm totally in, obviously.

Ok, this so-called 'Fergie' (I'll never forget you Sarah Ferguson!) is absolute kryptonite to any otherwise accumulated 'star-power' this is a vehicle for.

@CollegeBookworm: Yeah I guess I was thinking more about The Music Man, Oklahoma, Singin in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, etc. which are my favorites. Since I'm not a fan of guys and dolls and west side story, they didn't come to mind when I was thinking of old musicals I guess. But now that you mention it, it appears that actors with questional musical theater abilities have been ruining movie musicals since they were invented. I respect when actors have significant musical theater experience like Catherine Zeta-Jones. Clearly lots of actors start out in musical theater in high school, but I'm not convinced that many have much musical experience past that which to me doesn't qualify as having significant experience in the genre. Of course this movie looks good and I will probably see it, but I just don't get why they couldn't cast Raul Esparza or other equally qualified musical theater veterans as well as the famous names.

@Trulymadlyme: I hated Kids, Inc. (as well as the 80s/early 90s Mickey Mouse Club), even when I was just an elementary school kid. So, there was already a strike against her there in my book.

@chinaplate: And yeah, that Lady Lumps thang was my last straw. The fact that it did win Grammy's should make everyone in the world aware that the Grammy's are a simple popularity contest and in no way reflect any actual musical greatness. Nine is one of my favorite Broadway soundtracks. It looks like they did the production proud, and I cannot wait to see it.

Me being the complete DDL/Judi Dench fan, I am all over this. Not to mention my love for high drama, musicals, constumes, and camp. *grins*

Not to get all pedantic, but I have an issue (besides the obvious ones!) with Fergie's casting. In 8 1/2 the part of the prostitute (La Saraghina) is played by Eddra Gale, who was by no means a small woman in the film.(Here's a video of the infamous dancing scene:) Part of the point of the La Saraghina character is she represents the overripe, exagerrated sexuality of pre-adolescent boys. I should not be suprised Hollywood sized down and mainstreamed the character, but still disappointed none the less. They totally miss the point to maintain the unrealistic standards of beauty. Grr!!
