Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse Renewed For A Second Series

I’ve only caught a couple of episodes of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse and to be truthful, they didn’t do much for me. But I am assured by fans of the show that not only does the series improve remarkably about halfway through the first season, but it is THE BEST THING EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD and I will fall heavily in love with it. Time will tell. Anyway, Dollhouse obsessives will be stoked to learn that the show has been renewed for a second series.

Dollhouse, renewed? Better Off Ted, renewed? Whaa? Are we living in a new alternate world, where intelligent but low-rated shows with potential for increased audience size can now thrive? No. This news, as reported by the Caesar of scoop, Michael Ausiello, is simply a great display of power: passionate fans finally making networks understand that, at a scary economic time to be a network, they’d better start listening to the fans.

YEAH! TAKE THAT, “THE NETWORKS”!

Of course, there’s a catch.

You’ve probably heard that Dollhouse will be renewed for 13 more episodes, at a severely reduced budget. From Fox’s point of view, this decision makes sense despite the show’s poor ratings. Fox never has much success in the first half of the season, before American Idol comes on, so if Dollhouse continues to do badly, it won’t hurt the network that much (and they’ll get good coverage for not canceling it, plus their DVD division will make more money off the second season), and if its ratings improve, then so much the better.

So there will be less money for Joss to play with, but at least the show hasn’t gone the way of Firefly. A happy day for Dollhouse fans!

I have downloaded all the eps so far and I absolutely love this show! There’s something indefinable about it that gets under my skin but I also love the characters, the whole idea of the Dollhouse is intriguing and Tahmoh Penikett is hot! Seriously relieved that a second season of Dollhouse goodness is on its way.

Yay! Dollhouse DOES improve markedly from ep. 6 onwards – it’s like suddenly Joss steps out from the shadow of the Fox and delivers.

Still, pity we can’t have a new lead. Eliza Dushku struggles mightily and should be put out of her misery.

Well I’m glad Fox renewed the show, but sad that they are saddling it with 2 unproven comedies. A better fit would had been either Fringe or Lie to Me, but I suppose creating a solid block of watchable television on a Friday night was too much to ask. Fox is simply proving how un-committed they are to original thought and programing. I hope Joss and company take full advantage of this tiny offering and kill next season.
