Guess Samantha Who?’s Not Coming To Dinner
TV upfronts are happening across the land, and there were some surprises. Some shows were canceled, others renewed. The circle of life, of sowing and reaping, continues.
Though Christina Applegate was an Emmy nominee for her manic performance on Samantha Who?, and many expected it to be renewed for a third season, ABC has decided instead to cancel it. The producers couldn’t find an adequate way to slash the budge, so alas no more. Bad news for the likable Applegate and her costars Jennifer Esposito and Jean Smart. Though, let’s be honest, it was never very good. [Variety]
CBS meanwhile has picked up a doomsday lineup of new shows, including the second Jullianna Margulies lawyer drama in two years, The Good Wife, a Jenna Elfman sitcom, and the always-a-sure-bet NCIS spinoff starring the not-always-a-sure-bet Chris O’Donnell and the used-to-be-a-sure-bet LL Cool J. [Variety]
In the world of movies, Milla Jovovich no longer has to kill zombies with her magic guns. No, instead she has to bone Bob DeNiro to get Edward Norton, her arsonist husband, out of prison in the thriller Stone. Sounds crazy extreeeeme! [Variety]
Speaking of extreme, the revisionist history novel Resistance, about a WWII in which the Nazis take Russia and D-Day has failed, will be made into a movie. Which reminds us that we want to read that book. Thanks, movies! [THR]

Well most of these new shows look like crap, but the ones going up against NBC's el cheapo programming 5 weeknight hours of Jay (funny uh-oh, not funny ha-ha) Leno will no doubt do good.
Any word on The Unusuals?
@Cecil's Wielder: Yes to both.
DahlELama
blah blah blah... Mila Jovovich bone ...blah blah blah
mmmm.

@Cecil's Wielder: And what of Better of Ted?
Cecil's Wielder
Is Castle getting a second season?
Cecil's Wielder
@Richard Lawson: The "just woke up" line coupled with the carefully crafted "bed head" is equally suave.
@so5minutesago: I know right? It's like O'Brien took all the fall schedule secrets to the grave with her. I just need to know about Chuck, NBC, so I can decide whether I'll still watch you after you sacrifice a third of your primetime to Leno.
@so5minutesago: "Chuck" has been approved for partial-season, lower-budget run. Two cheers!
Glee! is about the best news from this. It looks like fun.
I'm also upset about Dollhouse. Why save it? Urg. Don't get me started on Whedon, but really, dude, spend the time on great stuff like penning a Serenity sequel (Star Trek was excellent, Serenity 2 could be too.) and stop foolin' around with the lame Dushku crap. Really. His infatuation with her is just annoying. Or just get out of the way and let J.J. Abrams handle it now. Actually, that may be the better plan.

Has anyone heard the fate of Chuck?

I laughed at the very last line, and had to scroll up and, yep, Richard.
@DahlELama: I've never even seen Samantha Who? but anything starring Jenna Elfman has got to be far, far worse.
gladys_kravitz
@unclevanya: Way to have a cigarette in the video to look cool, only to take one lone half-assed, non-inhaling drag, Dekker. Suave.
I would be weeping hot tears for the Sarah Connor chronicles, but alas, robots feel no emotion. And also, Fox just did my job for me. So long human resistance! Machines FTW!
I saw the "Glee" promo last week and up until the very end, I thought it was a preview for a potentially hilarious Christopher Guest parody.
Unfortunately, it's all too real. Sorry, Richard.
I'll second (or third) that sentiment: Samantha Who was entertaining; but Christina Applegate will never be out of work for long, so we'll get to see her in something else sometime soon. Meanwhile, always disliked Terminator, mostly because I hate the original story concept (anti-abortion propaganda, anyone?), but also because ugh, Brian Austin Green.
a boy and his dog
So I guess this was all in vain:
+ Watch video
Still lovely to look at, though.
Worst news I've read all day.
Jennifer McDonnell
Harsh disagreement over here--I freakin love Samantha Who? and this is the worst news I've read all day. (Closely seconded by the fact that apparently I'll be subjected to Jenna Elfman again.)
DahlELama
"Glee" sounds like the kind of smart, funny teen-oriented show that the CW would run for years, or that Fox would run and cancel after a season.
Too bad it's on Fox.
Boo. I liked Samantho Who.
I so wanted Samantha Who? to be watchable, but it so never was. Can't finger out why it never hit the right notes.
Aww, that picture is from the first Tony Awards I ever watched.
cmd
If Christina Applegate was a Scientologist like Jenna Elfman this would've never happened to her. I hope she's learned a lesson.
I'm so excited to see Glee.
@[scifiwire.com]
I'm so Tivoing this if it gets picked up.
@Cecil's Wielder: I sure hope so, I really like Castle.
DeadliestSin
@Wendy_Kroy: What?! I'm like geeking on all cylinders now. Tudyk in the V cast?! What coolness that is.
Spirit Fingers
@amphora: I gave up on it until they brought in Alan Tudyk... His agoraphobic stoner was fucking awesome (and made me reminisce about the cute paranoid ultimate frisbee player who lived down the hall sophomore year). Anyway, I figured I should start watching again, just to see more of him - but the season finale was crap, and Tudyk's brilliance was wasted. Still looking forward to him in the cast of V...
@Spirit Fingers: "Dollhouse" getting another chance kind of infuriates me. It is terrible. It is insulting that FOX won't bother trying to come up with something better for their viewers (not to mention advertisers)- it couldn't possibly difficult. Reruns of "Cops" in that same time slot did better.
amphora
@unclevanya: I can't believe they expected us to believe that twink would grow up to be Christian Bale. I think his casting was a major point in the downfall of that show, which had huge initial ratings. Lena Headly was fantastic.
fuzzywhat
@DahlELama: Everything I watch gets cancelled, while all sorts of crap I don't like American Idol, Ghost Whisperer and Dateline NBC doesn't.
Samantha was a cute show with a fantastic cast, but it was too cute and morally grounded for the long haul. Like a lot of shows lately, that premise was best suited for a miniseries.
fuzzywhat
the actors are all so very gifted. the scripts were mundane. simple as that. the preachy voice-over left me a little cold too
GodivaScuderi
I am very sad about this.
I hate ABC for the way they choose to kill of their shows. They did the same thing to Alias by moving it away from Lost on Wednesdays. They had a JJ Abrams night and they ruined it.
I know SW should have been able to survive without the DWTS lead-in, but I don't care. I don't think they gave it a chance, really. They should have done more to save it, I loved this show.
@Solomon Grundy: Apparently, we're both idiots.
DahlELama
Oh I thought Samantha Who was well cast and funny, for a traditional sitcom. Shows what I know.
@bytememehard: Because it just repeated the same formula week after week with no growth at all. She was deliberate hit by a car and there was not one second attention paid to the fact that pretty much everyone she knew was a suspect.
Now, the flashbacks were hysterical, but that's what, ten seconds every week? And then they missed the irony that New Sam was actually just as shallow and selfish as the old same, just more self-aware.
@I Love New Jersey: Sorry, the Unusuals got canned.
DahlELama
It seems the show with the great cast and writers get cancel, due to the network may have to give a pay raise to keep them on. The Crappy ones and the Reality shows are cheap. The Sub networks (Life, TnT ect) are getting better programming.
lunarhunter
@I Love New Jersey: You are not alone. About 50% of my favorite programs were axed.
rustneversleeps
@Just Sayin'.......: I forgot about the Scientology aspect of Jenna "strange lady" Elfman. She best not count on me for ratings. I won't be watching.
rustneversleeps
@gladys_kravitz: I remember that Elfman's co-star from her last (probably only) sitcom, and its name escapes me now, complained that her breath smelled like fish left out in the sun. I recall that he implied it was like this all the time and every script required kissing her multiple times. I always think bad breath when I see Jeanna Elman on the TV machine.
rustneversleeps
@DahlELama: I didn't watch any of this season but began rewatching my Season 1 DVD and still randomly laugh thinking of Jean Smart's "Howard, GO AWAY!" I'll miss the show, too.
