Turns Out People Aren’t Overly Outraged When It Comes To Lesbian Television Kisses
I was rather excited when I discovered Home & Away’s powers that be were planning on indulging in some Sapphically themed storylines. And then a few days ago it all turned to shizz with talk of angry viewers and censorship, and I began to despair. But fear not, supporters of the rainbow massive! The Age insists the backlash against the program wasn’t nearly as bad as some would have you believe!
Says Pravda on the Yarra:
Channel Seven says it has received fewer than 30 telephone calls nationally after screening the controversial “lesbian kiss” episode of teen soapie Home And Away.
A Seven spokeswoman said last night that the calls were evenly split between those supporting the broadcast of the kiss and those raising concerns.
Aww, that doesn’t sound so dreadful! Less than 30 calls? Some sour folks following the instructions of their pastor and ringing up to sook about gays, peppered heavily with some supporters? I can live with that.
I don’t know why parents are worried about their teenage daughters getting inspired by Home & Away and discovering their inner lez. What’s the worse that could happen? A short hair cut and a newfound love of Indigo Girls? Given that most soaps seem to have straight teens losing their virginity at the high school formal, and they’re either pregnant or married by the time the rest of their classmates are beginning university, if I were a parent I’d totally be rooting for more homosexually themed plots on popular television programs if I wanted my child to end up with tertiary qualifications and have a career somewhere other than the local takeaway place.

Haha, I love it! I’m so happy to hear that the hoopla wasn’t as bad as some sections of the media made me think. It restores my faith in the Australian people.
You make a good point about the pros of being a teen lesbian – no unplanned pregnancies to worry about. I never thought of it that way. Your whole last paragraph was inspired and I LOL’d which I never do. :-)
Where is the video of this “original smooch” between the characters Charlie & Joey that is causing all this controversy. From the video I’ve seen the smooch was extremely tame. Please send me a link as I am curious about all the Hub Bub! Thank you.
