Qantas Is DYING, People!
It seems the cold weather has resulted in those disobedient sharks finally taking a break from biting beach goers, which has given Qantas a chance to return to the headline grabbing glory days of 2008.
In our first Qantas related story for the day, we learn from the Daily Telegraph that the nation’s favourite airline is pretty much on the verge of death.
Qantas will no longer exist in its current form if the downturn that is crippling the industry lasts another six months, one of Australia’s leading aviation experts has claimed. Centre for Asia-Pacific Aviation director Peter Harbison said that a currently unprofitable Qantas faces being gutted and reconstructed around a more profitable Jetstar model.
He also told The Daily Telegraph yesterday that the 3300 jobs already axed at the airline would be easily superceded in the coming months if conditions did not improve. The airline confirmed on Tuesday it was currently losing money and was likely to chalk up a loss of up to $180 million in the first six months of 2009.
I don’t want Qantas to turn into Jetstar! I mean, I know deep down they’re the same company, but I love flying with Qantas and I loathe flying with Jetstar (Avalon? Really? I gotta catch a bus to Avalon in order to go to Sydney? Goddamn it, I might as well catch the bus the whole way up there!). Get your shit TOGETHER, Qantas! I believe in you, even though Mike Goldman is doing everything he can to make people want to fly V Australia instead!
PS: Dear V Australia, it should be noted that if you give me free flights I will ditch the dying kangaroo that is Qantas so fast your head will spin. Until that day… pick up your game Qantas!

Dear oh dear, are seriously worried about Jetstar? In most cases it takes barely any longer to go to Avalon than to Tulla. And in my experience they’re just as good at service, if not better, than Qantas. But hey, what the hell do I know?
In any case, the comment from Harbison is a real fizzer, and shows how good/crap (there is a fine line) journalism can whip up a public frenzy of emotion and lead us all screaming about protecting the Flying Rat! Yes, there will be change. Will it become a clone of Jetstar? No, at least not on the outside. Internally they might slim things down, but Qantas will always remain.
Oh and Jess, that means you won’t have to make the trek to Avalon to fly Qantas at most any time. Maybe one day you can jump on the Sunbus and find out that it’s not away at the ends of the earth. If it stresses you that much, take a couple of shots of the puffer and blog back at me about the ordeal ;)
