@cmd: I'm not so sure. I don't think that bailing on the marriage when the kids are five or ten is any better for them. Also, as you get older, you mellow out some, and maybe after 18+ years of feeding your frustration and hostility you can let go of it and see why you got into the marriage in the first place. I'm amazed at the number of couples who were at each other's throats while raising their kids who now have pretty great relationships.

As lame as Mel is, he's no where near as bad as Ted Kennedy.

Teddy left Mary Jo trapped in a submerged and upside down car, then took himself to a motel, called his handlers, showered, then walked around outside the motel making sure he was seen as if he'd been at the motel all night. He went to fetch ice and chatted up a few tourists, no less.

Ted divorced his wife after his multiple affairs drove her to alcoholism.

The scary part is that Ted is still a member of the U.S. Senate.

couple of points here... he's not a "traditionalist" catholic, he belongs to a fundamentalist sect, so there is a difference there. additionally, if he married a non catholic without her converting, there is an argument for annulment to be made, because a marriage between an "is" and an "is not" isn't technically a "marriage" in the eyes of G-d. interestingly enough, she was probably forced to sign a procalmation promising to raise her children Catholic regardless of the fact she isn't one. She would have also not been allowed to take communion at her own wedding unless she had special dispensation.

On the other hand, a marriage performed in a Prostestant church is not valid in the eyes of the Catholic Church even if both spouses are members of that church, though they will recognize a marriage of two non-Christians in a non-Christian ceremony (e.g., two Jews married by a rabbi) . . . something to do with the Catholics not regocnizing anyone else operating under the Christ franchise.

I know about this as a result of trying to get married in the Catholic Church to my previously-married Episcopalian fiancee.

Wacky rules, no question about it, but if the priests didn't spend all that time thinking them up, they'd just be diddling even more boys than they do.

I got married in the church to please my very Catholic parents, and my then-fiance (non-Catholic) and I had a big laugh over that, as he knew I had absolutely no intention of inflicting a Catholic upbringing on any children I might bring into the world. In fact, the priest who married us told us that the 'raising the kids Catholic' thing was more of a hope and a suggestion than any kind of order or requirement.

But, if your fiance was not intent on raising the kids Catholic, why is there a problem? And if he was intent on raising the kids Catholic despite your objections, I'd suggest that stuff like that really needs to be resolved before you tie the knot.

@LilyBlue: It was a personal issue of honesty. I knew I would not raise the children as Christians. And my husband did not want to sign anything implying that he would be doing so alone (and thus implying not having his wife's support). We discussed this at length and frankly.

We both felt starting a marriage signing something neither of us (but esp. me) felt comfortable with was no way to begin an honest relationship with each other or God. We did not want it on our conscience - that we had signed something - when children arrived and that we could look at it as "just crossies" when we didn't raise them as Christian. It was a long process, we interviewed over a dozen priests, and finally found a wonderful Apostolic Catholic priest who performed a magnificent ceremony without requiring anything but our promise to keep in touch. Cannot say enough great things about him. Roman Catholic priests completely unwilling to marry us without my abnegating my Judaism when raising my children - that is their prerogative, but it was not anything both I or my Catholic now-husband wanted.

You already know about the people who commit the most horrible crimes while under the influence (of spirits); their loved ones say things like, "He's/She's the nost kind-hearted person I know, etc! etc!
