Grey Gardens Behind The Scenes: Edie’s Grandkids Talk About The Beale Family

In these behind-the-scenes clips, writer/director Michael Sucsy discusses his extensive research (which included reading Little Edie’s journals), and the Beales’ descendants fondly remember the Edies. More on costume and production design, after the jump.

Aside from the Edies’ banter, the two aspects of the film that are most memorable are the Grey Gardens home itself, and Little Edie’s fashion sense. In this clip, production and costume designers explain how they so accurately recreated the line between the past and the present.

    @BUNNYLUV: Netflix is how I saw "Grey Gardens." How did you handle "The Bridge?" I kinda feel like that would just be masochism on my part. Finally getting control over suicidal depression? You should watch a documentary ALL ABOUT SUICIDE! Be reminded of suicide EVERY TIME YOU SEE THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE! I live near San Fransisco, so that would be pretty often.

    The clips don't work, at least not on my computer. Sad face.

    Unfortunately, the producers completely screwed the only surviving member of the original documentary, Jerry Torre. Jerry is a friend of mine and the producers, posing as fans, asked a bunch of questions. When it came time for credit, nevermind a consulting fee, he was shafted because, as the producers said, they weren't using his last name so the character wasn't really "him". I refuse to watch this film based on this fact alone.

    @HoooooooT: Thank you, That's a great idea. I'd hate to have to wait until I can get it from Netflix.

  • BUNNYLUV

    @Our Lady of the Massacre: Really? well I just saw ''The Bridge'' and I think If I can get through that I can deal with any documentary thanks for the advice though!

    Illegal downloads
    Will keep you sated until
    Dear Netflix arrive

  • Our Lady of the Massacre

    @BUNNYLUV: I'm pretty sure you can. But a word of waning: the original documentary is absolutely wrenching to watch.

  • BabyJane

    @trulymadlyme:

    No HBO here
    Just salty tears of regret
    Basic cable sucks

  • HoooooooT

    @BabyJane: I'm sure you'll be able to find it online after it premieres. Try "free-tv-video-online.info"....it's where I watch Dexter and Flight of the Conchords and The Tudors.

    Can you get the doucumentary on netflix? That would be fun to watch before the movie

  • mervbaby

    I'm having wear your cardigan as a hat party for this. We're having ice cream, (garbanzo bean) pâté and will try feeding white bread to my cats because I don't have any raccoons.

  • mervbaby

    @HoooooooT: I think its next weekend.

  • BabyJane

    I really want to see this, but I just can't justify adding HBO just to get it. I must say, it looks very well done.

  • trulymadlyme

    Without HBO
    I am sad, stuck waiting for
    Netflix to arrive

  • HoooooooT

    Has this debuted yet? If not can we have a life blog when it happens???

    HoooooooT

  • kimboslice

    @BUNNYLUV: Yep, it's on Netflix.

  • kimboslice

    @Our Lady of the Massacre: What makes you say that? I really enjoyed it and didn't find it wrenching in the least.

  • everythingsfree

    I'm so excited! I was in the gym the other day reading entertainment weekly which I never read, and it said if you went to the EW website you could get free passes to an advanced screening (I don't have HBO). Then I got an email with the tickets and it's happening tomorrow on my birthday! I always have trouble figuring out what to do for my birthday, so this was a good surprise. I'll have to figure out what costume to wear for the day.

  • RubyStanwyck

    Oh god, I've been watching all these featurettes on On Demand non-stop since you guys first posted about the movie. It is the only reason I'm paying for HBO after my free subscription ended last month!

  • olivia2.0

    @BabyJane: We should host Jezzie-centric viewing parties, city by city. Although I'm not real sure I want you bitches in my house. You'll probably drink all the vodka, eat all the brie and terrify the boyfriend!

  • BUNNYLUV

    @starryeyd now haz a star!!!1!!: I live less than a mile from the bridge and it was pretty terrifying, they don't mention suicides on the news so it's almost like you would'nt know how often it occurs unless you saw it

    BUNNYLUV

  • BabyJane

    @olivia2.0: You seem to know me well!

  • curioushair

    @BUNNYLUV: Oddly enough, I picked up The Beales Of Grey Gardens at my local library today. I'm sure they have the original doc, too, but it's probably checked out.

  • Breamworthy

    @BabyJane:
    It seemed a bold choice
    No TV in the new house
    What about Edie?

  • HitOrMs

    @ShubhraEchion: Wow. That's incredibly fucked up of the producers.

  • Elizabooth

    So excited! We were suckered into getting HBO when we had to call our cable people for something else and I'm so glad it happened right before it airs. I think Drew is going to be awesome.

    @ShubhraEchion: Is this information actually 100% reliable? I'm a fan of the Maysles brothers and hadn't heard of such a story. They are the producers on the original doc, along with Susan Frömke. There's no mention of Jerry Torre as a producer, though he is listed as being the uncredited handyman that appears in the original doc. If the handyman character isn't integral to the story (i.e. it's truly a movie about the mother/daughter), I'm not sure I really see his case. Unless I'm missing further input he had in the movie, or rights he had to the story, I'll have to wait to view the end film to judge...

    @ShubhraEchion: There was a piece about him in The New Yorker a few years ago:

  • ToniaAntiphus

    Jerry, aka the Marble Faun, isn't in the movie at all, even under a different name. Most of the movie takes place before the 1975 filming of the doc; the only stuff set in '75 is the filming of the doc itseelf, or rather the interview sessions with the Beals. Except for a brief appearance by Jackie O, the new movie doesn't venture beyond the Beales. So Jerry shouldn't take it personally.

    @SarahHeartburn: Thanks! That's an interesting article. I'll be curious to see the film and see how they treat it. It's one thing if they totally change the character, if they're completely basing it on him, it seems like another matter entirely.

    if you guys think this is going to be great..did you see the broadway thing with Christine Ebersole? A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. and staunch..

    @ShubhraEchion: Oh! And I'm sorry... I read that slightly wrong, thought you were saying he WAS a producer. My fault. Good to know. I wonder how it will turn out. Does anybody know if there's any stories of litigation or is he planning on just dropping it?

    I hope it finds its way to the internets. I hope I can watch this. Gosh, I'm getting uber-excited by these jezebel teasers!

    @BUNNYLUV:
    I watched it last night for the first time from netflix and it is pretty exhausting. I recommend only two bong hits though. Anymore than that you start wondering if your life will end up like their's.... Wait wait wait, I have a dead dad, two brothers, a mom to take care of and dreams of stardom...
    this is the kind of shit that makes you clean out the litter box at 3 in the morning.

  • PetiteGal

    I'm looking forward to this. Does anyone know if HBO Canada is debuting this on the same night?

  • Mrs. Stephen Fry

    @BabyJane: It is available on Netflix. It is in my queue with a long wait.

  • krismry

    @itsameddafor:Exactly, the great fear is that we could start turning into the Edies without realizing until cat food cans were halfway up the staircase. But no one mentions this, and maybe the publicity team decided it was forbidden to say this, but the Edies were mentally ill. Jessica L and Drew B when interviewed insisted on the emphasis that this was a story of the love between mum and daughter. They were not well, whether the actors were allowed to admit so or not, and they would have been better off if someone had kindly installed them in one of those places like Tom Cruise family put the Rain Man. As for Mrs. Onassis 'helping,' the less said the better. Always on her own planet.
