An Early Star Trek Rave

The Daily Mail took an early look at the new Star Trek prequel movie due out in May. “Effusive” does not quite describe the review:

By far the best of the 11 Star Trek movies, it must rank as the outstanding prequel of all time…

The picture moves at a terrific pace, and is a satisfying tale of good versus evil, with Eric Bana a highly hissable villain…

This movie really does promise a creative re-birth of science fiction adventure.

In retrospect, perhaps the quality of the film was foreshadowed when Paramount decided to re-up with Abrams a few weeks ago.

Or maybe it’s all just advance hype, and the end product will leave us feeling a bit let down, but also intrigued against all reason by hype for the next chapter of the story. But who expect that sort of plot-suspense roller coaster from the creator of Lost??

I've never been a Star Trek fan but this is by far the movie I am anticipating most this summer. I've even started watching old Star Trek episodes on Hulu.

There have been ELEVEN Star Trek movies? That is one amazing streak of futility.

Meanwhile (back on earth) the word is that Christopher Guest can't get funding for his next picture. But then, Hollywood was never about justice.

I'm mainly seeing the movie to support Simon Pegg - even though he claimed that all of the odd-numbered Star Trek movies were "shite" in the sitcom, "Spaced."

Set fanfiction phasers on "Pon Farr".

The best part o the whole thing isn't just that the movie is good (although that doesn't hurt). It is that this summer there will be an utter explosion of Star Trek Fanfic.

And even better than that, by about May 15, the first giant fandom war, between the people who have been writing Kirk/Spock since the 1960's, and the people who have been writing Kirk/Spock for about 60 seconds will occur.

*yes I am a Trekkie, no I dont wear pajamas to conventions or have ever even gone to a Trek one*

From everyone I know on a Trek board who has seen the early screening in Austin, even the ones who didn't like the plot of the movie when it was leaked, everyone has been gushing about how good it was. Phrases like as good if not better than Kahn are used a lot.

I myself, I have tickets to see it the night before opening night with my wife. She HATES Trek. Will only watch a handful of the Enterprise episodes because she loves Scott Bakula and has seen ONE old school episode (Trouble with Tribbles of course). She is excited to see this movie.

I like Star Trek, but I planned on seeing this originally only because I wanted to watch John Cho in - well, really, I just wanted to watch John Cho. I'm pretty psyched that it sounds like there will actually be a good movie to boot.

I don't care about the acting, directing or writing. For me, it's all about the uniform. If they don't restore the yellow and red velour v-necks, this movie will writhe in a pool of its own suck.

You know why this film is a success? two words: Bryan Singer

He can do no wrong in my eyes. Well, Superman wasn't the best but he has the goods to make a captivating film if he has the right script.

I'm running low on Paris/Kim slashfic and I never could get into the mindset of thinking of Shatner as any sort of sex symbol. But Quinto? Giggity.

Opening weekend all the mouth-breathers and motor-scooting morbidly obese will fill theaters and bury JJ Abrams in World of Warcraft-gleaned dollars.
