Sean Penn’s Addition To Stooges Movie Doesn’t Make It Oscar Bait
Sean Penn will play Larry, alongside Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio del Toro in the Farrelly brothers’ Three Stooges movie. While some had assumed/hoped this would be a classy biopic, it’s not. Just slapstick.
The Farrellys have been trying to get this thing off the ground for about ten years, hopping between Warner Bros. and Columbia before finally landing on MGM. Penn and Del Toro were always part of the dream cast, but Carrey is a late edition. Funny that the one confirmed comedian is that last, and most surprising, addition to the crew.
Variety remembers that Del Toro displayed ‘comic chops’ in that movie Snatch, but Guy Ritchie gangster zingers aren’t exactly the same thing as heavily-orchestrated socko ballets of physical comedy. Nor are witty, homo-positive Oscar acceptance speeches. Let’s hope their rehearsal process is long and fruitful.

@hypocriteoath: With Jim Carrey on board, you'll get more than just slapstick: you'll also get that hilarious self-centredness that makes Robin Williams such a sympathetic actor.
Carrey in this film is one of the most facile bits of casting I can think of in quite some time.

This film sounds like a fool's errand. The Three Stooges came out of a particular time and its intersection of vaudeville and film.
I'll only see this if Iggy Pop does a cameo.
"Just Slapstick"? really? the stooges were more than that... shameful depiction.
Um, I like all three of these actors? But I don't want to see this movie at all.

I love Del Toro and Penn (hate Carrey, though), but year, this movie doesn't sound so good. Plus wasn't Mel Gibson trying to get a Three Stooges movie made for like 20 years?
If it was those three actors, but directed by Terry Gilliam, this would be an epic, dark, unsettlingly fascinating film. As it stands, it will be a giant sinkhole of talent and money.

They've done biopics of the three stooges before, they always sucked. With the exception of Fever Pitch, the Farrely Brothers have made good movies. Then again almost all of these adaptation movies stink.
