Jessica Rowe Breaks Down In Tears At Anti-Bullying Conference

Poor old Jessica Rowe. The most boned news presenter in television history broke down in tears whilst speaking at a recent anti-bullying conference, and even though the following article doesn’t mention him directly, I’m placing the blame squarely on Eddie McGuire’s shoulders.

Television personality Jessica Rowe broke down and cried at a public forum yesterday as she told of the hurtful insults and criticism she had endured. Rowe became emotional and had to stop part way through her address to an anti-bullying conference after telling of the ridicule she faced as a TV host.

During a “tumultuous” period when she moved from Channel 10 to Channel 9’s Today, critics attacked her weight, her laugh and her hairstyle. Rowe said she would “collapse in a weeping heap” when she got home.

“The criticism, jibes and remarks continued in certain sections of the media for days, then weeks and then months on end,” she said. “I remember thinking, it can’t get much worse… and the following week it would.”

Rowe said she opened one “hideous piece of correspondence” and found critical newspaper clippings.

“I recall being shocked that someone who didn’t know me could be so mean-spirited and cruel,” she said. “I remember seeing the front cover of one of the television guides voting me the most annoying person on TV. It felt like the final straw and it made me wonder, ‘What had I ever done?’.”

Oh, Jessica Rowe. I’m sorry you went through all of that, and if it helps, I never found you annoying or hateful. I mean, I felt like the interview you did with Vogue where you described your temporarily murderous thoughts toward your daughter during your post natal depression slightly terrifying in its use of details (“The
small silver Tiffany & Co. clock that I used to time my breastfeeds became a weapon in my mind. I wondered how easily the clock could crack my baby’s delicate skull”
). But hey, maybe your incredibly descriptive confession helped a new mother suffering from post natal depression stop feeling so incredibly alone, so chin up!
You’re a winner!

good to see Jessica on the road to recovery. the TV business is a tough fishbowl. while the upside is great – the money, the fame, the high life – often players are strangely and naively unaware of the downside: with a public profile comes a level of public scrutiny. it’s a classic trade-off. in other words; don’t like the heat? get outta the kitchen.

Scary though her comments were, it helped me with my postnatal depression. Lots of women think these things!
