Diablo Cody Posse Craves, Hates Your Attention
Diablo Cody and her Hollywood gal-pals cooperated on today’s self-consciously sexy New York Times profile. Odd, then, that they complained people pay too much attention to their looks.
Screenwriter friends? Just a thought: If you don’t want people to fixate on your sexuality maybe don’t blurt out to a Times profile writer, “We’ve all seen each other naked.”
Or call you drunken limousine rides “super porno.”
But having talked your work on a would-be series called Sluts, and having dubbed yourselves “The Fempire,” it sounded a bit disingenuous when you all complained about “pressure to look photogenic in a way that is not demanded of male screenwriters.”
That’s surely true of the Femperors. But these aren’t hermit screenwriters, hunkered down in Los Angeles apartments, avoiding the sort of Times reporters who would call them “gorgeous” in the second paragraph.
No, these are women with moxie, and ambition. This profile has the feel of, oh, a group bid to launch some sort of lady Entourage, maybe? The photogenic, novelist author of the Times profile would fit snugly into such a project well.
Whatever their specific dreams, Entourage-scale aspirations will be judged with the likes of Adrian Grenier and Jeremy Piven in mind. As Cody knows all too well, that’s just how people think.

@jrhys: agreed.
Eh whatever. I can't raise much ire, they work hard, are succeeding in a very male dominated field and they at least do things, unlike some vacant and ambitious women we know and constantly lampoon here.
jrhys
I just read the article. The self-conscious, Jezebelian, hipster cliquey shit made me want to plunk down my life-savings on all things Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay. It's sad that these very mediocre writers get to be heroes solely because they're women in a male-dominated field.
Their pluck and determination is admirable of course. And I cannot bear to waste my time watching a single goddamn thing they write.
Being the sexiest screenwriter in Hollywood is kind of like being the wittiest library aide at prom.
What Happens in Vegas, Juno, Grad Student inThe Squid and the Whaleand Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
This is the female screenwriter in Hollywood?
I would gladly take one good Amy Heckerling movie every ten years for any and all of these movies.
TillieHarper
It's so FUCKING frustrating when articles about successful women mention their looks. I know they worked hard and fought a lot of adversity to be as successful as they are. And THAT is what I want to know about, not how "gorgeous" each woman is.
If made into a TV show I hope Diablo Cody's Oscar gets written as a magically animated wisecracking sidekick.
AvenueOfTheStrongest
@IheartNothing: and also, I actually like what these women are doing in Hollywood The article style just didn't do it for me.
Did anyone else have a problem with the quote that says "a thinking man's Scarlett Johanssen"? Really? Because I thought this article was supposed to be empowering. Also, the dude who says "i know tons of beautiful women in Hollywood but none of them write like Diablo...." REALLY? WHY NYT? WHY?
My only problem with Cody is her monthly (I think?) article on EW. All she does is talk about herself for an entire page.
barb95
@TillieHarper: I miss Amy where is she?
The one in the plaid shirt and glasses is cute.
I don't mean to be picky, argumentative, or unkind, but by what standards are these women considered gorgeous?
@Wrapitup: Honest to blog?
Senor_Macho_Solo
The blond is ugly because she has glasses. There's no way to make her look good.
Senor_Macho_Solo
Diablo Cody. Most over rated (and now probably over paid screenwriter) since Joe Ezterhas. When did indie become the new hack? It used to be blockbuster!
VittoreOwl
@Senor_Macho_Solo: no no no, you guys. According to the article, she's a thinking man's Scar Jo! You can't beat that with a baseball bat! C'mon!
@Jackiewsu: I hope she didn't die of complications from routine liposuction!
Crabbie
@Senor_Macho_Solo: I think her glasses are adorable.
The tone of the article is annoying, but I didn't find the subjects annoying at all. When you are an even moderately attractive girl or young women, you will inevitably be praised and rewarded for your looks. When you lose weight, or get a more flattering hairstyle, or wear sexier, more revealing clothes, you get positive attention. People are nicer to you, and they pay more attention to you. When you are a young women in a male-dominated field, this phenomenon becomes even more pronounced. When you are constantly rewarded for playing up your sexuality and disparaged when you fail to meet the stringent demands that society places on a young woman's appearance, it is inevitably going to shape your behavior, to an extent. It's completely unreasonable to hold that against women who are legitimately smart and funny and hardworking.
@Weegee's bored: By what standards are these women NOT considered gorgeous?
eatsshootsleaves
@El Matardillo: Yes indeedy.
@metoometoo: Very well said!
jrhys
@Senor_Macho_Solo: At least you live up to your screen name.
jrhys
Maybe I don't see it because I'm a heterosexual woman, but this:
"We talked about our bowels, and I was like, 'O.K., we're best friends now.'"
Doesn't seem like the comment of someone overly concerned about being presented as sexy.
eatsshootsleaves
@eatsshootsleaves: They look like your average junior high teachers out for a few White Zins after a lively Book Night.
Diablo Cody and Jewel are the same person to me. Stripper? Homeless in a car? I don't care.
no talent; it's who you know and who you blow. the end.
MrRewrite
You have to give DS credit for this quote: Some in the room tittered - maybe even Twittered. That made me laugh!
@metoometoo: Very true.
You even managed to do it without blaming either gender. Bonus points.
Paul_Is_Drunk
@eatsshootsleaves: Activia is really bringing people together.
@MrRewrite: You sound like some kid's bitter divorced dad in a bad fauxindie redemption movie. Which means any minute now you'll meet a cute waitress and you guys will write the great American screenplay together as you regain your faith in love - and yourself.
jrhys
It's quite possible the screenwriters were hoping for a more cogent article about their work, and the Times writer and/or editor decided to spin it into a fluff piece with all the sexual references. It was published in the Styles section, after all.
That said, as any woman knows, a woman gets much further in just about any career if she is beautiful. That's just the way it is, unfortunately. I mean, imagine if Joe Ezterhas was a woman! There's no way he woulda sold his shit.
mcbeachy
@jrhys: And you sound like your cliched, stereotypical feminazi.
Arceus
@AvenueOfTheStrongest: Maybe it should be a funny talking robot?
regisgoat
@Wrapitup: I wonder if we can bring back an era when writers were homely and brilliant, as opposed to cute and vapid like they are now?
regisgoat
Whos the second girl from the right, with glasses? Shes fucking hot
Nevermind ;)
pressure to look photogenic in a way that is not demanded of male screenwriters
I'm no expert on screenwriters, but the few I've known (male or female) would welcome any "pressure" on anything from anyone, since their whole gig is getting people's attention and, given the nature of the market, that task is a constant uphill struggle for them.
"Pressure" means that at least someone is paying attention and maybe even cares, which I imagine beats ignorance or apathy by a factor of, oh, fifty zillion or so.
Sometimes it seems as though complaining about the attention one gets is just a way of emphasizing that one gets a lot of attention (and nevertheless wants more).
@Arceus: And you sound like your cliched, stereotypical, dyed-in-the-wool, arsehole.
If we all sing together, we could make up a ''Choir of People Everybody Hates The Most In The World''! ''
@Wrapitup:
Tell me about it, the same shit goes on in gaming. There's absolutely nothing about being male that lends itself to being a better writer, or director, or game designer or whatever. This isn't the Olympics, where men are physically more capable.
Being impressed with yourself or someone else simply because they belong to an industry dominated by the other gender, when there is nothing about either gender that makes them better or worse, is masturbation.
@[www.amazon.com] kind of way.
princeCapsaicin
@Motoko Kusanagi: Where did you go to junior high? I want to go to there.
And another gorgeous writer chick is Jen Celotta - co-Exec. Producer and writer of The Office; however, she's not part of the four-some clique.
I will admit it. I wanted to be a television writer but could never get my foot in the door, despite working for a major network and meeting lots of people. I've seen an administrative assistant I worked with become the creator and writer of Veronica Mars. I am horribly jealous of these women. But I guess they found the magic key.
Wait, there's an article? From their Saucy-In-A-Can pose, I assumed I'd be seeing it Wednesdays at 9/8 Central on Bravo.
@Creasy: I thought it was Kid's Meal...
stolichnora
Your title has a typo in it. I believe it should read:
"Diablo Cody Pu**y Craves, Hates Your Attention".
At least if her EW column and blog are to be believed.
GooberSaysHey
Liz Meriwether is a hilarious and brilliant writer (I taught her when she was an undergrad, and she was really the best and dreamiest student ever). And in fact, for what it's worth, she is adorable in person. And Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist was delightful. So was The Squid and the Whale. I'm not sure where the "vapid" and "mediocre" are coming from. Perhaps y'all are used to higher fare at the CIneplex?
VedetteHope
@eatsshootsleaves: As an aspiring writer, I am sorry I wasn't there to meet her when she made that comment right then. I think we would have connected on a very deep level.
Michelle Goodman
@TillieHarper: Yup, pretty pathetic when one actually looks at their body of work. Oh but look: Girl Power, yay!
@VedetteHope: The Squid and the Whale was written by a man: Noah Baumbach. One of these 'writers' appeared in it as: Grad Student.
And for the love of God, please do not compare twee hipster shit like Nick and Norah to something sad, deep and actually intelligent like The Squid and the Whale, no matter how "dreamy" and "adorable" your former student is (and btw, yuck).
Somehow, I don't see Shepard Fairey doing "Diablo-Has-A-Posse" stickers.
An entourage of their own...highly paid publicists.
TheodoraEquiesterer
@Senor_Macho_Solo: What if... *gasp* You take those glasses off???
They are headquartered at the Maxi Pad.
@metoometoo: Hear, hear.
Satyrica
Sexy is a double edged sword that cuts both ways. If you flaunt it, it's going to attract attention from who you want to notice you and who you don't want to notice you. Quit bitching bitches and write something worth watching. Then we'll decide whether you deserve the attention or not. Just from this photo, it is evident that none of them are equipped to get by in Hollywood on looks alone.
justgroovy
@Weegee's bored: Oh, well, duh... They are held by the standard held against every woman: supermodel/playboy sex goddess. OBVIOUSLY. Was there another standard? I mean, not to be picky or unkind, but come on, there's only supermodel hot or completely ugly troll, right? So, then, no one should consider these women attractive... since they're not supermodels. I'm not being picky! Promise! No argument here!!
hesperid
I find their ambition and mutual support inspiring. What I don't find inspiring are their movies! I guess mediocrity loves company.
@mcbeachy: I think this is a good point. It sounds like the writer of the piece was very enamored by the idea of being a hot, glamorous Hollywood screenwriter, and projected that onto her subjects.
@hesperid: Right . . . So, anyone who isn't a troll is automatically gorgeous? Is saying they're not gorgeous really maligning them?
I think it's very important that we take all statements about their absolute unequivocal gorgeousness very personally. How they look is the most important thing in the world to all of us. Best to be extremely precise.
ambitious
@Arceus: Um, really? Because there are a lot of cliches and stereotypes about "feminazis," and I don't see how jrhys's comment fell into any of them.
Write something that isn't snarky YA pablum and maybe I'll give a fuck. Lots of good-looking writers who suck.
Also, you may dislike Diablo Cody's writing style or feel that her Oscar was undeserved, but to insist that she has no talent whatsoever is either willfully bitter or sexist. She created something fresh, unique and entertaining that many people enjoyed. And she did it with no prior screenwriting experience. That takes talent.
Nick and Norah was a cute, above average high school movie. What Happens in Vegas was crap. I read Liz Meriwether's script, Fuckbuddies, which was on the 2008 Black List, and thought it was a fairly mediocre imitation of movies like Juno and Superbad. But still, she made it onto the Black List, which is commendable.
And there are plenty of mediocre male screenwriters who don't get this kind of venom flung their way.
@metoometoo: Spot on.
Treeless
@justgroovy: Well, Diablo Cody's not getting by on her looks (she couldn't; she's only "cute", and lots of people have cute). A whole lot of people already watched Juno and liked it--hence all the attention she's getting, and only a bit extra because she's 1) reasonably attractive 2) reasonably young.
Treeless
@metoometoo: It's not just this comment, she's spewing all over this thread.
Arceus
It still ends up with girls braiding each other's hair and talking about boys. Boring.
gwendemarco
@Arceus: Personally, I wouldn't define a mild defense of women writers, or an absence of uncalled for animosity, as "spewing."
Accusing commenters who fail to express a general hatred toward women of being "feminazis"...that, I might refer to as "spewing."
I watched 'What Happens in Vegas' this weekend on the HBO. It was not good.
I heard that Joe Esterhaus and Akiva Goldsmith have seen eacother naked too.
@mcbeachy: You mean to tell me a Tommy Bahama shirt unbuttoned to reveal a beer gut and silver chest hair isn't sexy?
@JudgeFudge: Someone has to have a Brian Grazer pun to insert. Anyone? Anyone?
im so over juno and it's cutesy slang. so fucking over it.
easternsike
@metoometoo: Which might be true if Cody hadn't worked her "used to be a stripper" meme into every conversation she's ever had. Like people who went to Harvard who mention it in the first 2 minutes of conversation.
Idle thought: do you think they really call her Diablo? Or is she Brooke to her pals?
Lulupasternak
I think thinking men think of Scar Jo quite often, albeit only for a few minutes at a time.
FrankGoodness
@VedetteHope: calling your students dreamy is really creepy
@Bellyboop: You worked for a network and met lots of people, but did you write much? I'm not saying this to be mean, but there is no magic key. Yes, you need to network, but mainly you need to write some good shit.
@Lulupasternak: I am an aspiring screenwriter, and if I ever get an opening, you can bet that I'll use any hook I can come up with to market myself and try to get my screenplays made and watched.
By the way, my best friend from high school went to Harvard, and as a result I now know a lot of people who went there. And they all go out of their way not to mention where they went. When people used to ask, they'd say "Oh...I go to school in Boston." And now when they reminisce about college experiences, they always say, "At school..." when most people would reference the actual name of the college.
"The Fempire's solid front - all four wear the same gold necklaces with tiny heart pendants inscribed with words that can't be printed here, gifts from Ms. Cody ..."
ok, I'm done.
ligmasagbatch
@Wrapitup: Wait how does Jezebel get implicated?
dola
@metoometoo: What about paranoically interpreting absolutely every little thing as sexist or an attack on/hatred directed towards women like you do? How utterly tiresome it must be to be you.
Arceus
@ligmasagbatch:
Ewww ... I missed that part. Yes, Miss Cody's a One Trick Pony, alright, and I'm not talking about Juno.
@Senor_Macho_Solo: I'm smelling a "She's All That" Remake...
@Arceus: Reducing the careers of four successful women writers to: "no talent; it's who you know and who you blow. the end" is sexist and an attack on/hatred directed towards women. That is not my paranoia, that is an easy, obvious interpretation of a straightforwardly offensive and insulting statement.
jrhys responded to that statement with a rather lighthearted retort, and you called her a feminazi, and thus, painted yourself as probably at least somewhat sexist.
Not every little thing is sexist or an attack on women, but some things are. Pointing that out doesn't make someone a feminazi, nor does it make one paranoid or tiresome.
@metoometoo: The Limbaughian word "feminazi" is kind of a sexist thing to say all by itself.
eatsshootsleaves
@gwendemarco: A Defamer regular! Thank god you're here. And thank you for your comment.
@eatsshootsleaves: Agreed, but I can only fight so many battles at one time.
I thought that was Garth.
whoneedslight
@solipsister: Bingo.
@barb95: Totally. It used to be better, but lately it's just like a breathless diary of her adventures meeting [other] celebrities. That said, her Rock of Love column in the latest issue is an improvement.
CassandraJuicy
@metoometoo:
I read Fuckbuddies, too, but in my mind it's blurred with "I Want to Fuck Your Sister" which was also a Blacklister. Not really sure about this Liz Meriweather, but she is super cute in that photo and her titles are good.
FrankGoodness
Eh.
0h1ndustry
The fuck happened to this place???
Shumina
@Shumina: P.S: See you at Movieline.
@Shumina: But look at all the shiny new Girl Power. Don't you feel inspired?
This is B.S.: If men "aren't pressured to look photogenic" I'm gonna quit doin' these fucking crunches and paying for Hair Club.
atlasspanked
Pictured from L to R: Miranda, Samantha, Carrie, & Charlotte.
@El Matardillo:
she's a good kisser, too.
are we sure this isn't a new version of The L Word instead of Entourage? Liz Meriweather is so Jenny Schecter.
okay, when the writer of What Happens In Vegas is lauded as a great screenwriter, and an article talks about such a girl getting to sit in her Laurel Canyon home writing in her "pajamas" it makes everyone with a coherent and decent script who works at Starbucks want to shoot big spitwads into her coffin. Sorry, but there is no justice in this universe.
@a_woozle_named_peanut: There you go. My point exactly.
mcbeachy
@eatsshootsleaves: LOL. By that logic, the word feminist is sexist by definition as well.
Arceus
I have to wonder if the New York Times meant something implicit by running this article in Styles instead of Arts and Entertainment, where a better article on 3D movies ran. Are they telling these sexy ladies they're all Styles no Substance, and write 2 dimensional characters? Ouch...
@VittoreOwl: I blame Good Will Hunting.
These gals are brainy, sexy and awesomely successful. Let's all be honest: what's not to hate about them? And the tone of the article was valid: These Are Hot Babes! They Can Write! That's great stuff. I wouldn't have been half as interested in them if they were plane Janes.
LucasPentheus
can't get the reply to work. second on the right in glasses IS hot.
jjbings
The article says these are screenwriters "at the top of their game." If "What Happens in Vegas" is the top of anyone's game, I feel bad for the "dinosaur topiary" that surrounds the pool in their Laurel Canyon home. Ghastly.
sweetbiscuit
@Arceus: Yeah. That's "logic."
The word "feminist" means someone who advocates for woman's equality.
The word "feminazi" is a word that belittles and insults people with this goal by comparing them to followers of Hitler.
Come on now.
eatsshootsleaves
@Arceus: You are hilarious! My dad and I have been calling each other feminazis since since 1992, when it was au courant. As for my comment to MrRewrite, I work as a screenwriter and teacher of screenwriting so I was responding to the defeatist self pity in his post more than anything about women. Regarding my comment about these women on Gawker, I think most anyone of any gender who can make a living as a writer or screenwriter in this economy deserves respect. It's a hard road and it's a wonderful thing to have supportive friends along the way. But by all means carry on with your bad self and keep "spewing", you amuse me.
jrhys
@Arceus: P.S. And you sound like a sexist tool.
jrhys
@jrhys: Thank you both for helping to alleviate the nausea that I got from this thread.
Hm... Ideally shouldn't talking about being naked and enjoying your sexually not actually have anything to do with whether you're hot or not? You should be able to be your sexual self without your looks becoming the most important thing about you. I guess I don't believe that sexuality = looks.
