Brett Stewart Has Been Suspended By The NRL
Folks were wondering whether being charged with the assault of a 17-year-old girl would lead to Brett Stewart being suspended by the NRL (remember, “the NRL has no ruling or precedent in banning players from taking the field after being charged with a criminal offence”)). Well, we now have an answer.
Manly star Brett Stewart has been suspended by the NRL until round five after being charged with sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl. The 24-year-old fullback was charged last night over an alleged incident following the club’s season launch.
This has obviously disappointed Manly officials, who were hoping this little incident wouldn’t affect their ability to take on the Canterbury Bulldogs over the weekend.
Sea Eagles co-owner Scott Penn and chief executive Grant Mayer had crisis talks at the NRL headquarters in Sydney this morning. The talks followed the Manly board’s insistence early today that Stewart would play in this weekend’s season opener against the Bulldogs.
The Sea Eagles are also in the spotlight over Anthony Watmough’s behaviour after the forward was involved in an altercation with a club sponsor at last Friday’s controversial launch event. The NRL has fined Manly $100,000 over the function.
What does it say about the brain power of NRL stars when players cannot even be trusted to attend a launch event where alcohol is served without getting a bit rapey or punchy? Are they complete Neanderthals? I know Brett Stewart must be considered innocent before proven guilty, and that not all NRL players deserve to be tarred with the simpleton brush, but my god. Stuff like this seems to happen year after year, and it just gets more and more embarrassing and shameful.
CORRECTION: Oh, you clever clogs. Due to my muddled brain and the NSW/VIC crossover I made a few years ago, I made a mistake and referred to the Canterbury Bulldogs as the Western Bulldogs in the above piece. My bad! But you people don’t come here for facts, surely? Can you forgive me? I’ll find you more Mr T related videos, I promise.

Canterbury bulldogs, not Western bulldogs
i never knew the western bulldogs crossed into the NRL …
It’s not just an NRL thing, Jess. It crosses codes, and not just in the sense that the NRL’s Manly might be surprised to learn they’re playing the AFL’s Western Bulldogs this weekend. But seriously (taking my snarky sub hat off), the fact that this happens with ridiculous regularity doesn’t surprise me but the fans’ reactions do.
This incident points to a societal problem. Women are still denegrated every day. Hell- some women do a great job of denegrating themselves every day. Incidents like these may not surprise anymore, but that in itself is an appalling reflection on society. Where are the men who respect and protect women? Why is that such an old fashioned ideal?
