Just A Quick Note About Last Night’s Oscars…
I know our US counterparts lovingly live-blogged yesterday/last night’s Oscars ceremony for you all, thus ensuring I felt impotent all day long, but there were a couple of things I wanted to say about the show.
· I. Love. Hugh. Jackman. And how nice to hear an Australian accent! (glares at Melissa George)
· Now I’ve been informed by most people I know that the musical numbers made the ceremony appear like the entertainment deck of a cruise ship and therefore should be mocked without mercy… but I loved it. Truly. When Hugh announced the arrival of the Craigslist Dancers in the opening number, I lost my shizz. And the whole “The Reader! I haven’t seen The Reader” sci-fi robot dance had me on the floor. Maybe I need to get into the musical theatre scene?
· Although things got a bit surreal when Hugh Jackman and Beyonce began singing songs from Grease.· Beyonce was miming, surely?
· Loved loved loved Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black’s beautiful speech. Same goes for Sean Penn’s acceptance for Best Actor. Given that I’d just had to trawl some pretty hateful sites to get inspiration for yesterday’s Westboro-related post, I couldn’t agree more with Penn saying that those who are so filled with hate toward their fellow man to actually campaign against love will one day feel shame over their actions (this life or the next).
· Kate Winslet’s dad’s wolf whistle across the theatre to let his daughter know where he was sitting. Adorable. Totally made up for the asthmatic beginning to her speech.
· Once again, it was hammered home to me that Kate Winslet is a very beautiful woman.
· I liked the smaller theatre! It seemed much more intimate. Two thumbs up.
· I liked looking at Tina Fey’s face as she sat behind Mickey Rourke during the announcement of the nominees for Best Actor and wondering what brilliant one-liners she might Twitter about the night once the Oscars were over.
In conclusion… Hugh Jackman and cruise ship entertainment FOREVER!

Wot about Our Nicole and the rather insincere delivery (and fluffing of lines) in her introduction of Angelina Jolie’s nomination as best actress? Sophia Loren, Halle Berry, and even Shirley Maclaine managed to offer seemingly heartfelt, interesting, sometimes humourous efforts…while Our Nicole…well…what was up with her?!
