From The ‘Were We Lied To?’ Files | Facebook May Not Be Responsible For That Divorce After All

At the beginning of the week, I was shocked and appalled by an article I’d read in The Guardian titled ‘He two-timed me on Facebook. But our divorce will be for real’. I couldn’t work out if it was simply a horribly written piece about horrible people or if it was satire, and asked “Is this an amazing example of over-sharing via newspaper? Is Georgina a comic genius? Should I cry a little for the state of mankind?”

Thankfully someone over in the UK has gotten in contact with me and filled in the blanks a little. Now, providing what they have told me is true, I can cease weeping for my fellow humans… at least until Metro Station have another hit.

Here’s what they told me about the writer and her ex:

As someone who knows both Georgie and her ex, let me assure you the story is a total fabrication. Her ex is from a different country and now resides there, and that is where the truth ends. Georgie writes for a trade magazine and pitched this story to any paper who would listen. Georgie has been telling versions of this fabrication to most of her ex’s mates and coworkers as a way of defaming him, and he is very hurt that the lie went national. It’s a sad day for our media that gerogie can use the people she knows at respected national papers to publish some personal slander.

Was it all lies? That does make me feel better. And really, the whole thing just seemed so impossibly stupid. If our source of extra insight is indeed correct, I feel incredibly relieved.

So now what happens to the “Georgina is a wonderful woman with a heart of gold” idea? On the plus side, this isn’t about the state of mankind anymore, merely an individual’s state of mind. Oooh, I just realised, you could make a rhyme based on “state of mankind” and “state of mind”: how exciting!!!

But if it is a lie, what does that mean for defamation and privacy issues? Not only has she brought faceplant into disrepute by claiming (possibly falsely) that it broke up her marriage, thus giving the anti-Web 2.0ers more amunition, but she has then used traditional media to spread defamatory lies, bringing traditional media down below the Web 2.0 which she has set out to malign. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I’ve never met a Georgie that wasn’t a two faced cow.

I am in a safe position to say that Georgina’s article was by no means a fabrication. It was all painfully true, and I personally think it was extremely brave to write such a article. Why should she not try and derive some form of postive from what was ultimately a cowardly betrayal by an immature and selfish little boy?
