Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Is Quite The Fisherwoman!

Did you know that Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was a fishing enthusiast? No, neither did I. But she is, and she just reeled in one hell of a fish.

Reports New Zealand’s Sunday News -

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa won’t have to sing for her supper for a while. On Wednesday, the Kiwi diva caught a 217kg blue marlin in the seas off Cape Brett in the Bay of Islands.

217kg blue marlin? Christ almighty – that’s nearly a Biggest Loser contestant! It took the Dame 50 minutes to reel that massive beast in, and lucky for those of us intrigued by the opera singer’s skills when it comes to deep sea fishing (and why wouldn’t you be intrigued, unless you have no soul?), the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club spokeswoman is spilling her guts.

A Bay of Islands Swordfish Club spokeswoman said it was the opera superstar’s first catch on her new boat, Arabella.

“She christened the boat with it,” the spokeswoman told Sunday News. “Usually she tags them but because of its size she brought it in. I think now she is having smoked fish and pate.”

She said UK-based Dame Kiri “loves fishing” and is often seen at the club when she is holidaying in New Zealand. The 64-year-old singer is holidaying at her exclusive property at Rawhiti, near Parekura Bay.

Dame Kiri’s catch is the first blue marlin recorded by the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club for 2009.

WOW! There’s so much information to soak up. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is an ace fisherwoman, she has a new boat called Arabella, she’s currently eating smoked fish and pate as we speak, and she’s the first person to catch a blue marlin in 2009 in the Bay Of Plenty!

Now, of course, my competitive side has reared its ugly head, and I have an overwhelming need to learn that an Australian singer has caught an even bigger fish than Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s whopping haul. Kylie? Vanessa Amorosi? Delta? Get casting, bitches.
