AFL Hero Ron Barassi Bashed In St Kilda

Footy legend Ron Barassi is recovering from injuries he sustained after getting into fisticuffs with a drunk fellow who’d been beating on his ladyfriend.

Says The Age:

AFL legend Ron Barassi was smashed to the ground and kicked in the head while he lay in the gutter after he went to the aid of a woman being bashed in St Kilda, early on New Year’s Day. Barassi, 72, was nursing bruised ribs, lumps on his head and a graze to the front of it, but had no regrets.

For better quotes, let’s turn to Herald Sun:

“If you see a woman being belted up, you step in. It’s like when a kid is being bashed. It’s not right,” Barassi said. “I’m OK. I went for my 5km walk today. It’d take more than a prick like that to stop me.”

Thems fighting words!

As my Summer Breakfasters co-host Anthony “Tony” “Biggsy” Biggs commented this morning, “… I can remember years ago when St Kilda was full of junkies and whores – and you were safe to walk the streets”.

Why was he even out on New Year’s Eve in St Kilda? That’s asking for trouble! Just like that doctor on Grand Final Night, the bogans own the street those nights. If Australia was invaded by zombies you would be more likely be shot by a bogan with a shotty from a commodore than have your brains chomped.

There’s no news on what happened to the girl?
