Top Gear Australia Angers Car Companies

The folks at SBS’s Top Gear are apparently in trouble with some big name car companies, with the Herald Sun reporting that the program caused over $200,000 worth of damage to vehicles which appeared in the first series of the show. Now that’s some good driving!

Filming of the Australian series of Top Gear has turned into a demolition derby with a repair bill close to $200,000. Eager driving and wild stunts have left a trail of destruction behind the Top Gear team that goes beyond the expected bill for bald tyres from slides and burnouts.

Luxury cars have needed total resprays because of flying stones, and lesser brands have reported damage from silly stunts created for the SBS TV series, which is unofficially confirmed for a second series in Australia in 2009.

Silly stunts like using some Holden Astras in a game of lawn bowls. Admittedly I am not much of a petrol head, but I find it hard to believe watching grown men play lawn bowls with cars would make for compelling viewing. But what do I know? I’ve never seen the footage. Maybe it was hilarious. Even if angry representatives from the car companies didn’t quite get the joke…

“We have no appetite for automotive Jackass,” the spokesman for one of the damaged brands said. “When they revisit series two, they will encounter a lot of shut doors,” said another.

Automotive Jackass! Zing!

And to think, there are poor kids out there who can’t even afford the license fee for their Learners permit, let alone $200,000 to smash up cars. Shame on you, Top Gear Australia. Shame on you.

I hope they don’t come back next season, Aussie Top Gear was terrible. I stand by the original and the best.

I don’t get it. It’s ‘Top Gear’. That’s what they do. They drive around doing crazy stuff in flashy cars. Had they never seen the UK show?

Do you complain when cars are destroyed in big budget movies?
