‘Karate Kid’ Remake To Make Do Without Karate, Miyagi or Valley
Call us 80’s purists if you must (it’s a fair charge — after all, these Betamax tapes of Space Camp aren’t gonna watch themselves), but when remaking The Karate Kid, some things are essential.
Things like, y’know, karate, or a character who can plausibly bear the name of Mr. Miyagi. We’ve made our suggestions on the topic, but it looks like producers intend to go in a wildly different direction, according to Will Smith (whose son Jaden will be stepping into Ralph Maccio’s bare feet). In fact, now that they’ve gotten budgetary incentives from China, there will have to be some important changes:
Interestingly, though the original movie was set in the United States, the new version will take place in China, and that means key characters will change with it. “We’re making it with the China Film Group, so it’ll be based in Beijing. Mr. Miyagi was originally Japanese, so there’ll be a Chinese adaptation to it.”
But wait, isn’t karate a Japanese martial art in the first place?
“Fortunately, karate is originally a Chinese art form, so that’s the area we’re playing around in.” (Ed. Note: Though karate was developed in Japan, it is based upon Kenpō, a Chinese fighting style.)
Will Mr. Miyagi now become Mr. Mao, and will he teach kenpo in Beijing instead of karate in the San Fernando Valley? Will “Sweep the leg!” become “Envision the white infidel Sharon Stone“? Sorry, Elisabeth Shue — looks like that phone call you placed to your agent may languish on the “to call” list forever.

Please don’t do it you’re only going to jeopadise you rep and get a bad name. The 1984 THE KARATE KID (and sequels) was a smash hit not only in hollyowood but all around the world, everywhere you go you will still hear someone or see someone doing a scene/line/act or anything from the origianl Karate Kid movies…
The Karate Kid isnt just a good movie, it’s a great movie, it’s a classic for the ages, and it shouldn’t be touched (re-maked) by anyone in that matter…
Not just to me but to alot of people around the world would absolutely HATE to see a Karate Kid re-make. Personally i wouldn’t watch it i would kill myself rather than watch it thats how PASSIONATE i am about The Karate Kid. The Karate Kid movies are my FAVOURITE movies of all time, and i would be angry/upset/dissapointed but most of all furious if Will Smith goes along with this…
Will Smith if you’re reading read very carefully…
YOU are such a great actor, YOU are such a great performer, YOU have made smash hit movies, YOU have released top songs, YOU are loved by many around the world, YOU are one of hollywoods finest, YOU have a big rep, and I LOVE YOU. I think you’re great and i think you’re a legend and also funny. But please don’t do a Karate Kid re-make…
Why can’t you just keep you’re idea (plot) do what ever you want, bring superman in it if you want, do anything but call this movie THE KARATE KID, you’re a smart man and my idol im sure you can figure out a different title.
YOU ARE MY IDOL, i don’t want to HATE you over this…
Call it THE KARATE STUDENT or KARATE KID but not THE KARATE KID
Still till today The Karate Kid means something to alot alot ALOT of people, theres only ONE Daniel Larusso & ONE Mr. Miyagi
Please take this into some serious thinking, remember I’m you’re biggest fan speaking for everyone’s love and passion for the original Karate Kid.
Like i said keep you’re story call it something else
Take Care!
