Kanye West “An Angry Robot” At Sydney Show

This story from the most recent Christie’s Music News column over at themusic.com.au regarding Kanye West’s recent performance in Sydney made me chuckle. Oh, the curse of the vocoder!

Kanye West was in a strange mood at his December 6 show in Sydney. He got into a rave about Britney Spears and how she “spazzed out” because of media, then how it had stripped him of a “real life” and then started the song “Love Lockdown” no less than four times. Each time he’d leave the stage, and the startled band would start again. Apparently he was supposed to have worn a new item for the number but it wasn’t available or something.

In Melbourne some genius threw a coin at him onstage, and was repeatedly told to “eat shit and die!” Which was weird because West had his trademark Auto-Tune effect turned on at the time and sounded like an angry robot. Meantime over at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre security was so tight that all personal items larger than the size of an A4 piece of paper, had to be checked in.

Ha!

I was at the sydney concert and I understand that the part about the media was part of a freestyle rap that he had been doing at most of the concerts along the tour.

I can also see why he was angry at the lack of clothing change as he had probably put a lot of effort into his show and wanted everything to run smoothly. He expressed the problem to the crowd, who were initially hostile, but eventually just enjoyed the song.
