The Gays Strike Back as Prop. 8 Protest Targets Mormon Temple
An estimated 10,000 marchers descended on West Hollywood last hour to protest the passage of Proposition 8, leading to a bust of outrage large enough to encircle the Mormon Temple on Santa Monica Blvd. before overtaking the thoroughfare itself. Streaming live footage from KNBC features a mostly peaceful protest to date, with only minor incursions resulting in a driveway shout-down and a bit of get-the-homos-off-my-lawn resistance from cops nudging marchers off a sliver of LDS property. The crowd spilled onto Santa Monica around 3:15, shutting down westbound traffic en route to Westwood Blvd.
A citizen operative sends word: “Shit is packed. … There were a handful of Mormons out front early on, but they went inside. Peaceful so far. But PACKED.” We’d love to hear from any others on or near the scene; you know where to find us.

Wait, I’m confused . . . gays want their differences accepted, tolerated, and embraced, right? So why then do they want to “marry” to be just like heterosexuals???
Gays don’t want to be “be just like heterosexuals”
Simply, for their unions to be recognised legally, and the same benefits awarded to hetrosexual couples. Nothing more, nothing less.
Terminology is irrelevant.
Gays have all the same rights as the general public. Why do they want to force everyone to call their relationship a marriage? I don’t know, but I know it won’t stop. Once they have that right they will sue to make so that the LDS and Catholic church must accept their “marriage” in their church or temple. That is what this fight is about. Whether gays can force religions to accept them. It couldn’t be more ironic that at the end of thie skirmish, the gay fascists are trying to intimidate the LDS people by standing outside their temple. This is exactly the intimidation that forced the LDS people to react in the first place. The gays ‘rights’ people are proving that they are fascists whose long-term goal is to force relilgious people to accept them. Good for the LDS and Catholic people for standing up for their rights! Good job!
We just got back from the huge rally on the Mormon Temple. It’s 11:30pm and we started at 3pm. At nightfall, a huge crowd from the East returned to the Temple after circling the nearby neighborhoods, including Westwood. At one point, the rally’s leader Mama Joi stood on top of the front gate and spoke to a crowd of thousands through her megaphone. No one was hurt and the gate was not breached.
Ben, you’re dead wrong about gays suing to have their marriages accepted by the LDS and Catholic Churches, etc. We want CIVIL marriages. Do you understand the difference between a CIVIl and a Religious Marriage? Does that sink into your thick skull or is it just fear that dominates your mind about this issue? YOUR RIGHTS ARE NOT IN PERIL BECAUSE WE WISH TO GET MARRIED AND HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS THAT HETEROSEXUAL COUPLES HAVE. DOES THAT GET THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULL AS WELL? Do you comprehend that?
Ben, also can you possibly put your feet in our shoes for one minute or do you only know how to see the world through your own eyes? You seem to think that marriages performed in the Churches will somehow be affected by our CIVIL MARRIAGES. You’re dead wrong about that!! Our CIVIL RIGHTS have been infringed and trampled on. This issue has now been sent back to the courts in California and they will rule on them once again within the circle and support of the California constitution which protects the rights of minorities (including gay people) from the TYRANNY of the religious majority. Does that make sense to you or does it need to be spelled out. The high California Court will decide whether prop 8 is valid or not. Should they decide that it is not valid due to its infringement on civil rights of a minority group (including precedence that was established for 6 months while we were able to marry with the court’s sanction) then prop 8 will be considered unlawful and will be struck from the California constitution as invalid.
Are these gay activists nuts? They want to piss of the Mormons more after they did a LITTLE mobilizing? Just imagine what the Mormons will do next when gays harass them at their Churches – this will just causes more Mormons to donate – even more money to ban gay marriage in the future.
These guys are just plain dumb.
I find it amazing that during a time of 2 wars, deep economic woes, world poverty, hunger and diseas that people choose to expend their time, energy and money to deny people from marrying the one they love.
Seriously, is this really what we should be focusing on?
Mormons are used to protests from wacky fringe groups. We’ve been fighting those kinds of elements for many years, so this is nothing new. The truth is that the protestors know their efforts won’t lead to the Church changing a position. They are protesting for one reason. They want confrontation and to create problems. This is very clear.
And tolerance? It’s a one way street buddy. Homosexuals never intended that they would be tolerant of anyone else’s views.
Benjamin clark, calm down. It’s to late for them to do anything. It has already passed and is in the constitution, why can’t they accept that? I don’t see any protests in Arizona or Florida, where the other marriage amendments passed. By the way Ben Clark, look up Family Code 297-297.5 for the California constitution. You need to realize it passed and accept it graciously, otherwise anger will get you nowhere.
Actually it’s not too late. There are several challenges mounting. Since when is it okay in the United states for a majority to oppress a minority? I’m also confused as to what rights gay people are taking away from ’straight’ people….that is simply absurd.
The gays want rights, but at the same time want to oppress the church because they disagree with them, what gives, what’s good for the goose ….
